The effect of melt over-heating on the morphology of Al_9FeNi phase in 2618aluminum alloy with high contents of Fe and Ni and 0.22 wt. percent zirconium has been investigatedby optical microscopy. SEM and TEM. The mechanical properties of 2618 aluminum alloy after hotextrusion and quenching/aging have been tested. The results show: melt over-heating treatment of2618 alloy with high contents of Fe and Ni at 960 deg C led to finer and better-distributedneedle-like Al_9FeNi phase in cast microstructure and fine Al_9FeNi particles after hot extrusion;the grain size of the alloy after hot extrusion could also be refined evidently by alloying ofzirconium; the ambient and high temperature tensile strength and elongation of 2618 alloy have beenapparently enhanced due to fine Al_9FeNi particles and dispersed Al_3Zr as well as fine grain size.

Pazopanib is the first and only tyrosine kinase inhibitor currently approved for the treatment of multiple histological subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma(STS).Initially developed as a small molecule inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptors,preclinical work indicates that pazopanib exerts an anticancer effect through the inhibition of both angiogenic and oncogenic signaling *** the establishment of optimal dosing and safety profiles in early phase studies and approval for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma,pazopanib was investigated in STS.A landmark phase III randomized study demonstrated improved progression-free survival with pazopanib compared to that with placebo in pretreated patients with STS of various *** efficacy of pazopanib in specific STS subtypes has been further described in real-world-based case series in both mixed and subtype-specific STS *** present,there are no clinically validated predictive biomarkers for use in selecting patients with advanced STS for pazopanib therapy,limiting the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the *** this review,we summarize the preclinical and clinical data for pazopanib,outline the evidence base for its effect in STS and explore reported studies that have investigated putative biomarkers.

Background and Aims:Vibration-controlled transient elastography(VCTE)is a noninvasive tool that uses liver stiffness measurement(LSM)to assess *** real-life data during everyday clinical practice in the USA are lacking,we describe the patterns of use and diagnostic performance of VCTE in patients at an academic medical center in New York ***:Patients who received VCTE scans were included if liver biopsy was performed within 1 *** performance of VCTE in differentiating dichotomized fibrosis stages was assessed via area under the receiver operating characteristics(AUROC).Fibrosis stage determined from VCTE LSM was compared to liver ***:Of 109 patients,49 had nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,16 chronic hepatitis C,15 congestive hepatopathy,and 22 at least two *** was 0.90 for differentiating cirrhosis(stage 4)with a positive predictive value(PPV)range of 0.28 to 0.45 and negative predictive value range of 0.96 to *** 31(32%)patients,VCTE fibrosis stage was at least two stages higher than liver biopsy fibrosis *** of thirty-five pa-tients considered to have cirrhosis by VCTE had stage 0 to 2 and 12 stage 3 fibrosis on liver ***:VCTE has reasonable diagnostic accuracy and is reliable at ruling out ***,because of its low PPV,caution must be exercised when used to diagnose cirrhosis,as misdiagnosis can lead to unnecessary health care *** routine practice,VTCE is also sometimes performed for disease etiologies for which it has not been robustly validated.

It is essential to predict the scour depth around bridge piers for hydraulic engineers involved in the economical design of bridge pier foundation. Conventional investigations have long been of the opinion that empirical scour prediction equations based on laboratory data over predict scour depths. In this article, the Back-Propagation Neural Network （BPN） was applied to predict the scour depth in order to overcome the problem of exclusive and the nonlinear relationships. The observations obtained from thirteen states in USA was verified by the present model. From the comparison with conventional experimental methods, it can be found that the scour depth around bridge piers can be efficiently predicted using the BPN.

The crystallization process of the eutectic composition of GdAlO_3-Al_2O_3 from the amorphous phase prepared by rapid-quenching of melt that leads to the formation of a cantaloupe skin-like microstructure was investigated using focused ion-beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (hR-TEM).The amorphous films were heat-treated at temperatures between 1000 °C and 1500 °C for up to 30min to form the eutectic phases of GdAlO_3 and Al_2O_*** GdAlO_3 and Al_2O_3 crystal phases that formed from the amorphous phase were identified by FIB-SEM and *** components began to crystallize and grow from the amorphous phase separately at different *** formation process of these crystal phases was different from that of the ordinary eutectic microstructure solidified from the GdAlO_3-Al_2O_3 ***,the observed structure is termed "eutectic-like" for *** microstructures formed from the amorphous phases at sufficiently high temperatures consisted of ultra-fine microstructures of individually crystallized components and were similar to ordinary eutectic *** heat-treating the amorphous films at 1500 °C for either 2 min,8min or 30min,the ultra-fine components of GdAlO_3 and Al_2O_3 were found to crystallize following a eutectic-like stage after 8min of heat treatment.

In this report, the analytical expression of Coulombic interaction between a spherical nanoparticle and a tetragonal nanorod is derived. To evaluate the Coulombic interaction in the oriented attachment growth of tetragonal nanorods, we analyze the correlation between the Coulombic interaction and the important growth parameters, including： nanoparticle- nanorod separation, aspect ratio of the nanorods, and surface charge density. Our work opens up the opportunity to investi-gate interparticle interactions in the oriented attachment growth of tetragonal nanorods.

Effects of Terracing and Agroforestry on Soil and Water Loss in hilly Areas of the Sichuan Basin, China

Soil erosion in hilly areas of the Sichuan Basin is a serious concern over sustainable crop production and sound ecosystem. A 3-year experiment was conducted using the method of runoff plots to examine the effects of terracing and agroforestry in farmland systems on soil and water conservation of slope fields in the hilly areas in jianyang County, Sichuan Province, Southwestern China. A power function (Y = aXb) can statistically describe the relationship between water runoff (Y) and rainfall (X). The regression equation for the treatment of sloping terraces with crops (Plot 2) is remarkably different from that for the treatment of sloping terraces with grasses and trees (Plot 1) and the conventional up- and down-slope crop system (Plot 3) regarding equation coefficients, while regression equations are similar between Plot 1 and Plot 3. Water runoff amount and runoff coefficient of slope fields increased by 21.5～41.0 % and 27.5～69.7 % respectively, compared to those of sloping terraces, suggesting that terracing notably reduced the water runoff in the field. In the case of sloping terraces, lower amount of water runoff was observed on sloping terraces with crops than on sloping terraces with grasses and trees. Sediment yields on the slope fields in the normal year of rainfall distribution were notably higher (34.41～331.67 % and 37.06～403.44 % for Plot 1 and Plot 2, respectively) than those on sloping terraces, implying that terracing also plays a significant role in the reduction in soil erosion. It is suggested that terracing with crops is significantly effective for soil and water conservation in cultivatedfarmland, while the conventional practice of up- and down- slope cultivation creates high rates of water runoff and soil sediment transport. Terracing with grasses and fruit trees shows a less reduction in water runoff than terracing with crops, which was observed in the 3-year experiments.

The carbide growth behavior of MAR-M247 LC alloy was investigated by directional solidification and quench method. The carbide volume fraction, trapping and growth behavior were correlated with the growth *** was found that the carbide volume fraction decreased at slower growth *** decreasing was caused by lower solidliquid interface trapping ability at slower growth rate.
