China lies at the heart of the global center of freshwater crab diversity in tropical Asia,where the 2 most diverse families occur:Potamidae(505 species,95 genera)and Gecarcinucidae(344 species,59 genera).China stands out as the country with the highest species richness of freshwater crabs *** fauna comprises 243 species in 37 genera and in 2 families,and species discovery is still progressing at a rapid *** vast majority of the species are distributed in southwest,south central and eastern China in the Oriental zoogeographical *** also stands out as having a highly endemic freshwater crab fauna at the species level(96%)and at the genus level(78%).Although the recent International Union for the Conservation of Nature(IUCN)red list conservation assessment found only 6 out of 228 species(2%)to be threatened(5 potamids and 1 gecarcinucid),the majority(more than 75%)of Chinese species are regarded as data deficient,so the number of threatened species is likely to be a serious *** from increasing habitat destruction and pollution are a major concern due to the rapidly growing economy and massive developments taking place in *** is therefore an urgent need for increased species exploration and for the development of a conservation strategy for China’s threatened(and potentially threatened)endemic freshwater crab species.

Palatability and profitability of co-occurring seeds alter indirect interactions among rodent-dispersed trees

Beyond direct species interactions,seed dispersal is potentially affected by indirect seed–seed interactions among co-occurring nut-bearing trees which are mediated by scatter-hoarding animals as shared seed dispersers.A relevant question in such systems is to what extent different functional traits related to food palatability and profitability affect the kinds of indirect interactions that occur among co-occurring seeds,and the consequences for seed *** used field experiments to track seed dispersal with individually tagged seeds in both monospecific and mixed seed *** measured indirect effects based on 3 seed–seed species pairs from the family Fagaceae with contrasting seed size,tannin level,and dormancy in a subtropical forest in Southwest *** all else was equal,the presence of adjacently placed seeds with contrasting seed traits created different indirect effects measured through a variety of dispersal-related *** mutualism was reciprocal due to increasing seed dispersal in mixed seed patches with mixed differences in seed tannins and ***,differences in either seed size or dormancy in co-occurring adjacently placed seeds caused apparent competition with reduced seed removal or seed dispersal(distance)in at least one *** study supports the hypothesis that different functional traits related to food palatability and profitability in co-occurring seeds modify foraging decisions of scatter-hoarding animals,and subsequently cause indirect effects on seed dispersal among rodent-dispersed *** conclude that such indirect effects mediated by shared seed dispersers may act as an important determinant of seed dispersal for co-fruiting animal-dispersed trees in many natural forests.

A rapid,sensitive,and cost-effective analyticalmethod was developed for the analysis of selected semivolatileorganic compounds in *** method used anautomated online solid-phase extraction technique coupledwith programmed-temperature vaporization large-volumeinjection gas chromatography/mass *** samples were extracted by using a fully automatedmobile rack system based on x-y-z robotic techniquesusing syringes and disposable 96-well extraction *** method was validated for the analysis of 30 semivolatileanalytes in drinking water,groundwater,andsurface *** a sample volume of 10 mL,the linearcalibrations ranged from 0.01 or 0.05 to 2.5μg·L^(-1),and themethod detection limits were less than 0.1μg·L^(-1).For thereagent water samples fortified at 1.0μg·L^(-1)and2.0μg·L^(-1),the obtained mean absolute recoveries were70%-130%with relative standard deviations of less than20%for most *** the drinking water,groundwater,and surface water samples fortified at 1.0μg·L^(-1),theobtained mean absolute recoveries were 50%-130%withrelative standard deviations of less than 20%for *** new method demonstrated three advantages:1)no manipulation except the fortification of surrogatestandards prior to extraction;2)significant cost reductionassociated with sample collection,shipping,storage,andpreparation;and 3)reduced exposure to hazardous solventsand other *** a result,this new automatedmethod can be used as an effective approach for screeningand/or compliance monitoring of selected semi-volatileorganic compounds in water.

Effect of organic modifiers on the capacity factor in micellar electrokinetic chromatography

Organic modifiers were effective both to extend the migration time window and to improve the separation of very hydrophobic compounds in MEKC. An iteration method was used to determine the migration time of micelles. The quantitative relationship between the capacity factor k' and the concentration of organic modifiers was derived, which was investigated experimentally. The linear solvation energy relationships (LSER) methodology was applied to MEKC, and good linear relationships between lnk' and solvatochromic parameters of 15 solutes were obtained in the presence of organic modifier in different concentrations, which indicated a new access in MEKC to predict k' from the structural parameters of solutes. The effect of column temperature T on k' was also investigated.

In order to exploit the outstanding physical properties of one-dimensional （1D） nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and semiconducting nanowires and nanorods in future technological applications, it will be necessary to organize them on surfaces with precise control over both position and orientation. Here, we use a 1D rigid DNA motif as a model for studying directed assembly at the molecular scale to lithographically patterned nanodot anchors. By matching the inter-nanodot spacing to the length of the DNA nanostructure, we are able to achieve nearly 100% placement yield. By varying the length of single-stranded DNA linkers bound covalently to the nanodots, we are able to study the binding selectivity as a function of the strength of the binding interactions. We analyze the binding in terms of a thermodynamic model which provides insight into the bivalent nature of the binding, a scheme that has general applicability for the controlled assembly of a broad range of functional nanostructures.

Effects of Growth Temperature on Structural and Electrical Properties of Li-N-H Codoped ZnO

Effects of growth temperature on the structural and electrical properties of Li-N-H codoped ZnO thin films grown by DC reactive magnetron sputtering were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that increasing growth temperature could improve the crystalline quality. But Hall measurement results showed that growth temperature had a nonlinear influence on the electrical property. The variation of electrical properties with the growth temperature was found to be related to the activated concentration of N in ZnO and the evaporation of Li during the growth process, derived from the Hall measurement and the second ion mass spectroscopy measurement.

This paper aims at developing a "local-global" approach for various types of finite dimensional algebras, especially those related to Hecke algebras. The eventual intention is to apply the methods and applications developed here to the cross-characteristic representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. We first review the notions of quasi-hereditary and stratified algebras over a Noetherian commutative ring. We prove that many global properties of these algebras hold if and only if they hold locally at every prime ideal. When the commutative ring is sufficiently good, it is often sufficient to check just the prime ideals of height at most one. These methods are applied to construct certain generalized q-Schur algebras, proving they are often quasi-hereditary(the "good" prime case) but always stratified. Finally, these results are used to prove a triangular decomposition matrix theorem for the modular representations of Hecke algebras at good primes. In the bad prime case, the generalized q-Schur algebras are at least stratified, and a block triangular analogue of the good prime case is proved, where the blocks correspond to Kazhdan-Lusztig cells.

Elevated plasma levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide in patients with chronic hepatitis C during interferon-based antiviral therapy

AIM: To investigate plasma levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), an established marker of cardiac function, in patients with chronic hepatitis C during interferon-based antiviral therapy. METHODS: Using a sandwich immunoassay, plasma levels of NT-proBNP were determined in 48 patients with chronic hepatitis C at baseline, wk 24 and 48 during antiviral therapy and at wk 72 during ***: Plasma NT-proBNP concentrations were significantly increased (P < 0.05) at wk 24, 48 and 72 compared to the baseline values. NT-proBNP concentrations at baseline and wk 24 were closely correlated (r = 0.8; P < 0.001). At wk 24, 7 (14.6%) patients had NT-proBNP concentrations above 200 ng/L compared to 1 (2%) patient at baseline (P = 0.059). Six of these 7 patients had been treated with high-dose IFN-α induction therapy. In multiple regression analysis, NT-proBNP was not related to other clinical parameters, biochemical parameters of liver disease or virus load and response to ***: Elevated levels of NT-proBNP during and after interferon-based antiviral therapy of chronic hepatitis C may indicate the presence of cardiac dysfunction, which may contribute to the clinical symptoms observed in patients during therapy. Plasma levels of NT-proBNP may be used as a diagnostic tool and for guiding therapy in patients during interferon-based antiviral therapy.
