AIM： To study expression of tissue factor （TF） in pancreatic cancer and its role in the development of thromboembolism.METHODS： TF expression was studied in eight human pancreatic carcinoma cell lines by Northern blot and indirect immunofluorescence. Expression of alternatively spliced TF （asTF） was assessed by RT-PCR. In addition, TF expression was determined by immunofluorescence in pancreatic tissues of 19 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma （PCa）, 9 patients with chronic pancreatitis （CP） and 20 normal controls. Plasma samples （30 PCa-patients, 13 CP-patients and 20 controls） were investigated for soluble TF levels and coagulation activation markers [thrombin-antithrombin Ⅲ complex （TAT）, prothrombin fragment 1 ＋ 2 （F1 ＋ 2）]. RESULTS： All pancreatic carcinoma cell lines expressed TF （8/8） and most of them expressed asTF （6/8）. TF expression at the protein level did not correlate with the differentiation of the carcinoma cell line. All but two pancreatic cancer tissue samples stained positive for TF （17/19）. In all samples of CP weak staining was restricted to pancreatic duct cells, whereas only a few subendothelial cells were positive in 9/20 of normal controls. TF and TAT levels in PCa patients were significantly elevated compared to controls whereas elevated F1 ＋ 2 levels did not reach statistical significance compared to controls. In CP patients TAT and F1 ＋ 2 levels proved to be significantly elevated compared to controls, although TAT elevation was less pronounced than in PCa patients. CONCLUSION： We conclude that in addition to the upregulated expression of TF on the cell membrane, soluble TF might contribute to activation of the coagulation system in pancreatic cancer.

The fabrication of near-net-shaped objects of RE123 superconductors by 'infiltration processing' is discussed. Near-net-shape processing involves the infiltration of preshaped porous green bodies of either 211 or yttria phases by liquids containing barium cuprates and copper oxides followed by a controlled peritectic solidification. The process yields poly- and also single-crystalline superconducting objects with a shrinkage of less than half of one percent of the green bodies. The preservation of the initial structure of the green bodies results in fabrication of RE 123 in a wide variety of dimensions and complex shapes. The demonstrated products include bulk components like cylinders, single domain thick films on a variety of substrates, freestanding fabrics and open porous superconducting foams. This paper presents a comprehensive description of the infiltration processing technique and the resulting microstructures of the superconducting bodies. The advantages of this technique and practical applications of the processed superconducting structures are highlighted.

The advent of video capsule endoscopy into clinical routine more than 15 years ago led to a substantial change in the diagnostic approach to patients with suspected small bowel diseases, often indicating a deep enteroscopy procedure for diagnostical confirmation or endoscopic treatment. Device assisted enteroscopy was developed in 2001 and for the first time established a practicable, safe and effective method for evaluation of the small *** with double-balloon enteroscopy, single-balloon enteroscopy and spiral enteroscopy three different platforms are available in clinical ***, double-balloon enteroscopy seems to offer the deepest insertion depth to the small bowel going hand in hand with the disadvantage of a longer procedural duration. Manual spiral enteroscopy seems to be a faster procedure but without reaching the depth of the DBE in currently available data. Finally,single-balloon enteroscopy seems to be the least complicated procedure to perform. Despite substantial improvements in the field of direct enteroscopy,even nowadays deep endoscopic access to the small bowel with all available methods is still a complex procedure, cumbersome and time-consuming and requires high endoscopic skills. This review will give an overview of the currently available techniques and will further discuss the role of the upcoming new technology of the motorized spiral enteroscopy(PowerSpiral).

The hot corrosion behavior of the NiAl coating and the 5Hf-NiAl coating induced by mixed salt at 900℃was *** with the NiAl coating,the 5Hf-NiAl coating exhibited superior hot corrosion resistance because the addition of Hf promoted the formation of protective oxide scale and reduced the growth rate of oxide ***,internal sulfides were not present in the 5Hf-NiAl coating after hot corrosion for 140 *** exhibited different distribution in the two coatings since the addition of Hf changed the hot corrosion process of the *** and Ti in the 5Hf-NiAl coating trapped and captured sulfur,preventing the penetration of sulfur into the *** hot corrosion mechanism of the two coating and the effects of Hf on this process were discussed in this work.

In this paper we discuss the potential usefulness of membrane systems as tools for modelling tumours. The approach is followed both from a macroscopic and a microscopic point of view. In the first case, one considers the tumour as a growing mass of cells, focusing on its external shape. In the second case, one descends to the microscopic level, studying molecular signalling pathways that are crucial to determine if a cell is cancerous or not. In each of these approaches we work with appropriate variants of membrane systems.

AIM:To investigate risk factors associated with Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal ***:This all-Ireland population-based case-control study recruited 224 Barrett's oesophagus patients,227 oesophageal adenocarcinoma patients and 260 *** participants underwent a structured interview with information obtained about potential lifestyle and environmental risk ***:Gastro-oesophageal reflux was associated with Barrett's [OR 12.0(95% CI 7.64-18.7)] and oesophageal adenocarcinoma [OR 3.48(95% CI 2.25-5.41)].Oesophageal adenocarcinoma patients were more likely than controls to be ex-or current smokers [OR 1.72(95% CI 1.06-2.81)and OR 4.84(95% CI 2.72-8.61)respectively] and to have a high body mass index [OR 2.69(95% CI 1.62-4.46)].No significant associations were observed between these risk factors and Barrett's *** but not vegetables were negatively associated with oesophageal adenocarcinoma [OR 0.50(95% CI 0.30-0.86)].CONCLUSION:A high body mass index,a diet low in fruit and cigarette smoking may be involved in the progression from Barrett's oesophagus to oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

Current treatment indications and strategies in chronic hepatitis B virus infection

The optimal approach to the management of several marginal cases with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is controversial. Serum HBV DNA and ami-notransferase levels, and the degree of necroinflammation and fibrosis determine the therapeutic decisions. All patients with elevated aminotransferase (> twice the upper limit of normal) and serum HBV DNA above 20 000 IU/mL should be treated. Liver biopsy is important for therapeutic decisions in cases with mild aminotransferase elevations and serum HBV DNA below 20 000 IU/mL. Chronic HBV patients who do not receive treatment should be followed for life. There are seven agents licensed for chronic hepatitis B: standard and pegylated interferon-alpha, lamivudine, adefovir, entecavir, telbivudine and tenofovir. One-year courses with pegylated interferon-alpha induce sustained off-therapy remission in 30%-32% of patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B and in a smaller proportion of patients with HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B. Oral antivirals achieve initial on-therapy responses in the majority of patients, but are intended as long-term therapies. Viral suppression has favourable effects on patients' outcome and modifies the natural course of the disease. Viral resistance, however, is the major drawback of long-term oral antiviral therapy. Lamivudine monotherapy is associated with the highest and ente-cavir monotherapy with the lowest resistance rate so far. There has been no resistance to tenofovir, but afteronly 18 mo of treatment to date. The optimal first-line anti-HBV therapy with the best long-term cost/benefit ratio remains unclear. If oral antiviral agents are used, compliance should always be ascertained and HBV DNA levels should be regularly tested.

Numerical analysis of straight and curved underground pipeline performance after rehabilitation by cured-in-place method

Underground pipelines are prone to damage by corrosion in Taiwan due to the humid climate and the aging and overuse of ***-dig technologies are necessary,as the cities in Taiwan are highly *** methods,including the cured-in-place pipe(CIPP)method,provide an alternative to the new no-dig installation methods,which are comparatively more *** this study,the numerical analysis software ABAQUS was used to simulate straight-line and curved underground pipelines damaged by *** calibration by small-scale physical modeling in the laboratory,numerical models were applied to the analysis of the mechanical behavior of straight-line and curved underground *** analyze the performance of the CIPP rehabilitation method,different scenarios for straight-line and curved pipelines were *** included before-and after-rehabilitation,different internal pressures and surface loading conditions,and different liner deformabilities and pipe-liner interface *** results suggest that the CIPP method can reinforce damaged pipes by reducing stress concentration and differential displacement near the corrosion ***,proper liner thickness,liner material properties,and pipe-liner interface strength are essential for well-designed CIPP rehabilitation.
