Exploring Factors Influencing Species Natural Regeneration Response Following Harvesting in the Acadian Forests of New Brunswick

In the Acadian Forest Region of northeastern North America, forest managers are under increasing public pressure to restore the forest to a more historic, natural condition by reducing in clearcutting and promoting partial-cut treatments that more closely emulate historic, local natural disturbance regimes. However, although numerous studies on the effects of partial-cutting on forest regeneration response have been conducted in surrounding temperate and boreal forest ecosystems, there are few studies that directly explore responses to various forms of harvesting within the Acadian Forest ecosystem, with its unique mixture of northern hardwoods and boreal forest species. Here, we conducted one of the first retrospective studies on forest regeneration following a variety of harvesting methods in the Acadian Forest using univariate and multivariate regression trees to assess regeneration response in 50 naturally-regenerating, harvested forest sites in New Brunswick, Canada. Our study shows that regeneration was highly influenced by harvest type, overstory composition, and environmental conditions as reflected by ecoregion classification. Canopy opening size (as controlled by harvest method) significantly influenced the dominance of regenerating species. The presence of conspecific overstory trees increased the likelihood of their regeneration following disturbance, supporting the direct-regeneration hypothesis, especially for species with limited seed dispersal (e.g., sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.). Despite reported problems elsewhere in eastern North America, neither American beech nor balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) constituted significant competition for the desired species on a broad scale, but the presence of beech was a significant deterrent for yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.).

Lithofacies modeling by multipoint statistics and economic evaluation by NPV volume for the early Cretaceous Wabiskaw Member in Athabasca oilsands area, Canada

The static modeling and dynamic simulation are essential and critical processes in petroleum exploration and development. In this study, lithofacies models for Wabiskaw Member in Athabasca, Canada are generated by multipoint statistics(MPS) and then compared with the models built by sequential indicator simulation(SIS). Three training images(Tls) are selected from modern depositional environments;the Orinoco River Delta estuary, Cobequid bay-salmon River estuary, and Danube River delta environment. In order to validate lithofacies models, average and variance of similarity in lithofacies are calculated through random and zonal blind-well *** random six-blind-well test, similarity average of MPS models is higher than that of SIS model. The salmon MPS model closely resembles facies pattern of Wabiskaw Member in subsurface. Zonal blind-well tests show that successful lithofacies modeling for transitional depositional setting requires additional or proper zonation information on horizontal variation, vertical proportion, and secondary *** Wabiskaw Member is frontier oilsands lease, it is impossible to evaluate the economics from production data or dynamic simulation. In this study, a dynamic steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD)performance indicator(SPIDER) on the basis of reservoir characteristics is calculated to build 3 D reservoir model for the evaluation of the SAGD feasibility in Wabiskaw Member. SPIDER depends on reservoir properties, economic limit of steam-oil ratio, and bitumen price. Reservoir properties like porosity,permeability, and water saturation are measured from 13 cores and calculated from 201 well-logs. Three dimensional volumes of reservoir properties are constructed mostly based on relationships among properties. Finally, net present value(NPV) volume can be built by equation relating NPV and SPIDER. Comparison of Bacterial Profiles of Fish between Storage Conditions at Retails Using DGGE and Banding Pattern Analysis: Consumer’s Perspective

Bacterial profiles between storage conditions (frozen vs fresh) were compared using PCR-DGGE and banding pattern analysis. salmon and tuna were collected and the bacteria cells were separated from fish cells using a somatic cell re-leasing agent. The results demonstrated that some were indigenous waterborne bacteria. However, the majority were identified as spoilage bacteria, pathogens and potential fecal contamination bacteria. Banding pattern analysis showed that the storage conditions were a significant factor in clustering bacteria. Frozen fish showed a smaller number of bac-terial species than fresh samples. Freezing seemed to play a role as a selective pressure by inactivating some microor-ganisms while favoring resistant ones to low temperature. The bacterial profiles seemed to be more influenced by afterharvest practices than the original environmental contamination. These findings provide consumers insight into fish quality, potential health risks of raw fish consumption, and the impact of storage conditions on bacterial group of raw fish.

Detection of Listeria monocytogenes in Foods and Characterization by PFGE

The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in 1042 foods collected from different market to characterize the isolates by phenotypical and molecular methods. In particular, L. monocytogenes obtained from different types of foods such as RTE (kimbap), fish (smoked salmon and seasoned-dried slice fish) and meat (cut raw beef and pork) from 2009 to 2011, were used. Twelve samples (2.1%) were positive for L. monocytogenes. Detection rate of L. monocytogenes varied significantly by food type and ranged from 1.1% to 5.2%. Meat is the highest prevalence for L. monocytogenes (5.2%) followed by RTE (1.8%) and Fish (1.1%). Twelve isolates were also serotyped by the agglutination method. The most common serotypes detected in the 12 strains tested were 1/4b (75.0%), followed by 1/2a (16.7%), and 1/2b (8.3%). For this study, we used serotyping and detected 6 different virulence-associated genes (inlA, inlB, plcA, plcB, hlyA, and actA) and 16s rRNA using multiplex-PCR. PFGE was performed to determine genetic characterization of L. monocytogenes strains to define the genetic diversity.
