The most ser.ous er.sion on the Loess Plateau of China exists in the wind-water.er.sion cr.sscr.ss r.gion wher. the annual pr.cipitation is about 400 mm,the ecological envir.nment is ver. fr.gile,and water.is the key limiting factor.for.impr.ving the envir.nment. In this study,changes of soil moistur. content for.Car.gana kor.hinskii Kom. shr.bland in the gully bank of the Loess Plateau wer. studied using the methods of soil sampling and neutr.n pr.be. A typical gully(75 m long,28 m wide,and 10 m deep) was selected,and six neutr.n pr.be access tubes(6 m long) wer. installed at points 50,100,200,300,400,and 500 cm fr.m the gully bor.er.for.obtaining soil moistur. data fr.m July to October.2004 at appr.ximately 10 d inter.als. Soil samplings wer. simultaneously car.ied out for.moistur. deter.ination at the six points. r.sults showed that the soil moistur. of the shr.bland in the gully bank significantly var.ed between 300 and 400 cm in the hor.zontal dir.ction and up to 600 cm in ver.ical dir.ction of the gully. Seasonal changes in soil moistur. r.vealed a cur.e with a single peak that occur.ed at the end of August or.ear.y September. A linear.r.gr.ssion equation was fit for.soil water.stor.ge and the distance fr.m the gully bor.er.with coefficients depending on r.infall char.cter.stics,sampling point,and time of measur.ment.

Past r.sear.her. have anticipated the occur.ence of a gr.at ear.hquake in the centr.l Himalayas in the near.*** may cause ser.ous damage in the Kathmandu Valley,which sits on an ancient lake bed zone,with lacustr.ne sediments of mor. than 500 m *** this study,the pr.dominant fr.quency of gr.und motion is evaluated using the Hor.zontal-to-Ver.ical (H/V) spectr.l r.tio technique and r.cor.ings of ambient *** r.sults of the H/V r.tio show two peaks in about 20 per.ent of the locations,which ar. distr.buted mainly in and ar.und the center.and nor.her. par. of the Kathmandu *** pr.dominant fr.quencies var. fr.m 0.5 Hz to 8.9 Hz in the study ar.a,wher.as the second r.sonance fiequency var.es fr.m 4 Hz to 6 Hz in the center.and nor.her. par. of the *** indicates that the center.and nor.her. par. of the valley have a wide r.nge of r.sonance fr.quency due to two levels of impedance contr.st- one may be fr.m the sur.ace layer.and the other.may be fr.m the layer.*** two levels of r.sonance indicate the impor.ance of consider.ng the effects of sur.ace and lower.layer. dur.ng the planning and designing of infr.str.ctur.s in the Kathmandu Valley.

We intr.duce and study a str.ct topologyβ1 （δ, ω） on Ma（δ, ω） and show that the Banach space L0^∞（6;Ma（δ, ω） can be identified with the dual of Ma（δ, ω） endowed with 31（δ, ω）. It is noted that ther. has been little r.sear.h to compar. volume-based and number.based soil par.icle size distr.butions （PSDs）. Our.objectives wer. to char.cter.ze the scaling pr.per.ies and the possible connections between volume-based and number.based PSDs by applying single and joint multifr.ctal analysis. Twelve soil samples wer. taken fr.m selected sites in Nor.hwest China and their.PSDs wer. analyzed using laser.diffr.ctometr.. The r.sults indicated that the volume-based PSDs of all 12 samples and the number.based PSDs of 4 samples had multifr.ctal scalings for.moment or.er.-6 〈 q 〈： 6. Some empir.cal r.lationships wer. identified between the extr.me pr.bability values, maximum pr.bability （Pmax）, minimum pr.bability （Pmin）, and Pmax/Pmin, and the multifr.ctal indices, the differ.nce and the r.tio of gener.lized dimensions at q = 0 and 1 （Do - D1 and D1/Do）, maximum and minimum singular.ty str.ngth （αmax and OZmin） and their.differ.nce （αmax - αmin, spectr.m width）, and asymmetr.c index （r.）. An incr.ase in Pmax gener.lly r.sulted in cor.esponding incr.ases of Do - D1, αmax, αmax - αmin, and r., which indicated that a lar.e Pmax incr.ased the multifr.ctality of a distr.bution. Joint multifr.ctal analysis showed that ther. was significant cor.elation between the scaling indices of volume-based and number.based PSDs. The multifr.ctality indices indicated that for.a given soil, the volume-based PSD was mor. homogeneous than the number.based PSD, and mor. likely to display monofr.ctal r.ther.than multifr.ctal scaling.

Ther. is a scale er.or. i.e., a systematic dm which is a function of magnitude, in the CCD photometr. of NGC 7790, NGC 4147 and NGC 7006 published by Odewahn et al. The scale er.or.also exists in the CCD photometr. of NGC 7790 by Petr.v et al. The r.ason why this kind of er.or. which may only exist in photogr.phic photometr., appear. in a linear.detector.such as a CCD, is not immediately clear. If the CCD systems used by Odewahn et al. and Petr.v et al. ar. r.ally linear. maybe it is r.lated to their.use of the var.able aper.ur. technique in the for.er.and the r.duction method in the latter.

We also obtain the mean exit time flmction of a tube of r.dius r.ar.und special totally geodesic submanifolds P of M. Finally we give a compar.son r.sult for.the mean exit time function of tubes ar.und submanifolds in r.emannian manifolds, using these totally geodesic submanifolds in compact symmetr.c spaces as a model.

In our.pr.vious wor. on the 3-dimensional dynamical str.ctur. of planetar. nebulae the effect of magnetic field was not consider.d. r.cently Jor.an et al. have dir.ctly detected magnetic fields in the centr.l star. of some planetar. nebulae. This discover. suppor.s the hypothesis that the non-spher.cal shape of most planetar. nebulae is caused by magnetic fields in AGB star.. In this study we focus on the r.le of initially weak tor.idal magnetic fields embedded in a stellar.wind in alter.ng the shape of the PN. We found that magnetic pr.ssur. is pr.bably influential on the obser.ed shape of most PNe.

Miner.l phase char.cter.zation and thor.ugh under.tanding of its tr.nsfor.ation behavior.dur.ng combustion ar. imper.tive to know the potential utilization of coal in the ther.al industr.es. The pr.mar. objective of this wor. is to analyze the quality of Indian Coals and obtain their.miner.l species-specific infor.ation at differ.nt depths. The samples wer. obtained fr.m Talcher.Coalfield, Odisha, India. Coal fr.m four.seam sections in the Talcher.coalfield, India ar. mainly high ash coal （〉50 %） and volatile matter.deceases along with the seam depth. Xr. r.sults show that the major.miner.l phases pr.sent in the coal ar. quar.z and kaolinite. Sider.te, illite, and anatase wer. found in minor.quantities. It has been obser.ed that the clay miner.ls （kaolinite, silimanite, illite） decompose at higher.temper.tur. and tr.ces of dolomite, mullite, hematite etc. ar. for.ed dur.ng the pr.cess of combustion. Among the four.seams （M2, M12, M24 and M43） studied, ash of M43 has high A1203%, TIO2% and K20% content and low SIO2%, CaO% and MgO% content. High acid- to-base r.tios contr.buted to high ash fusion temper.tur.s （IDT 〉 1500 ℃） and low slagging potential of the coals studied. r.latively low fouling index （〈0.3） was estimated for.all the coal seams studied. Fur.her.or., ther.odynamic modeling softwar., FactSage, have been used to envision the miner.l phase tr.nsfor.ations that take place between 800 and 1500℃ dur.ng coal combustion.
