Acute effects of Stretching on Flexibility and Performance:A Narrative Review

Passive and active stretching techniques have been shown to increase both chronic and acute range of motion(ROM).Acute ROM improvements can be countered by decreases in muscle performance,primarily after prolonged static stretching(SS)and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation(PNF)techniques when not incorporated into a full warm up procedure.In contrast,ballistic stretching and dynamic stretching techniques typically induce either an increase or no change in muscular force and power.This review explores studies that have investigated stretching responses on ROM,muscle functionality and performance.Collectively,the literature demonstrates that prolonged acute SS and PNF stretching can elicit the greatest changes in flexibility,but without additional dynamic activities(i.***.full warm up)can induce neuromuscular force and power output impairments,while increasing ROM and some sports specific performance.Muscle response to stretching may be determined by the manipulation of confounding variables such as duration,population,volume,test specificity and frequency.An increased dosage of some of these variables during stretching in isolation,augments ROM increases while attenuating muscle force output,except for stretching intensity which may lead to similar responses.Populations with high flexibility may have positive effects from stretching when tested on their sport specific performance,while general population may suffer greater negative effects.Not control-ling these variables during stretching protocols may lead to misleading information regarding its effects on muscle performance.

Aim The concept of post-activation potentiation(PAP)is still novel from a training perspective and lacks breadth relative to weightlifting exercises.Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of a conditioning activity(clean high pulls)on the performance of a main activity(clean)after the conditioning activity.Methods eleven volunteers who engaged in weightlifting(Male=5,Female=6)participated in two different testing ses-sions(experimental vs.control).Baseline measurements were taken following the warm-up.The testing condition was performed and additional measurements were taken at 30 s,2 min,4 min,6 min,8 min,10 min,and 12 min into recovery.A linear position transducer was used to collect peak power,peak velocity,and displacement of the barbell during the clean.Multiple 2×8 repeated measures ANOVAs were used to analyze the data along with a paired samples t test between baseline and"best"values.Results There was no interaction or main effect for condition(P>0.05).However,there was a significant main effect for time(Pes.The"best"values were significantly(Peater than baseline values(peak power:experimental=1354.76 ±521.24 W vs.baseline 1216.03 ±492.30 W;peak velocity:experimental=2.66 ±0.44 m/s vs.baseline 2.50 ±0.44 m/s;displacement:experimental=111.07 ± 12.09 cm vs.baseline 107.01 ± 11.32 cm).Conclusions The findings of this study are in partial agreement with previous literature where the warm-up was probably enough to elicit PAP.Therefore,recommendations for future studies could include utilizing a more elite population and to ensure all potential participants can squat at least 2 x their body weight.

Prey animals are often faced with uncertainty due to having imperfect information regarding current local conditions,including predation risks and the availability of reliable foraging opportunities(Dall 2010).As this uncertainty increases,the probability of making costly behavioral errors also increases,leading to more risk averse behavioral tactics(Feyten et al.2019).For example,Trinidadian guppies Poecilia reticulata are far more risk averse when faced with multiple unknown sources of risk assessment information than when faced with a mix of known and unknown cues(Feyten et al.2019).Prey can reduce uncertainty by gathering and integrating private and social information regarding current risk levels within microhabitats(Dall 2010;Munoz and Blumstein 2012).

This article presents an in-depth exploration of the acoustofluidic capabilities of guided flexural waves(GFWs)generated by a membrane acoustic waveguide actuator(MAWA).By harnessing the potential of GFWs,cavity-agnostic advanced particle manipulation functions are achieved,unlocking new avenues for microfluidic systems and lab-on-a-chip development.The localized acoustofluidic effects of GFWs arising from the evanescent nature of the acoustic fields they induce inside a liquid medium are numerically investigated to highlight their unique and promising characteristics.Unlike traditional acoustofluidic technologies,the GFWs propagating on the MAWA’s membrane waveguide allow for cavity-agnostic particle manipulation,irrespective of the resonant properties of the fluidic chamber.Moreover,the acoustofluidic functions enabled by the device depend on the flexural mode populating the active region of the membrane waveguide.experimental demonstrations using two types of particles include in-sessile-droplet particle transport,mixing,and spatial separation based on particle diameter,along with streaming-induced counter-flow virtual channel generation in microfluidic PDMS channels.These experiments emphasize the versatility and potential applications of the MAWA as a microfluidic platform targeted at lab-on-a-chip development and showcase the MAWA’s compatibility with existing microfluidic systems.

Background:Optimal patterns of accrual of recommended levels of physical activity(PA)for prevention of hypertension and obesity are not known.The overall aim of this study was to investigate whether different patterns of accumulation of PA are differentially associated with hypertension and obesity in Australian women over 21 years.Specifically,we investigated whether,for the same weekly volume of PA,the number of sessions(frequency)and vigorousness of PA(intensity)were associated with a reduction in the occurrence of hypertension and obesity in women.Methods:Data from the 1973-1978 and 1946-1951 cohorts of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health were analyzed(n=20,588;12%-16%with a Bachelor's or higher degree).Self-reported PA,hypertension,height,and weight were collected using mail surveys every 3 years from 1998/2000 to 2019/2021.Generalized estimating equation models with a 3-year lag model were used to investigate the association of PA volume(metabolic equivalent min/week)(none;33-499;500-999;≥1000,weekly frequency(none;1-2 times;3-4times;5-7 times;≥8 times),and the proportion of vigorous PA to total volume of PA(none;0%;1%-33%;34%-66%;67%-100%)with odds of hypertension and obesity from 2000 to 2021.Results:The cumulative incidence of hypertension was 6%in the 1973-1978 and 23%in the 1946-1951 cohort;27%of women in the 1973-1978;and 15%in the 1946-1951 cohort developed obesity over the period.Overall,a higher volume of PA was associated with reduced odds of hypertension and obesity.When the volume of PA was considered,the odds of hypertension did not vary according to the frequency or intensity of PA.However,increased proportion of vigorous PA to the total volume of PA was associated with a small additional reduction in the risk of obe sity.Conclusion:PA volume appears to be more important than the pattern of accumulation for the prevention of hypertension and obesity.Incorporating more sessions,particularly of vigorous-intensity PA,may provide extra benefits for the prevention of obesity.

Neuroplasticity enables teleosts to promote or downregulate the growth of their brains regionally.To compensate for the effects of predation pressure,teleosts may alter their brain morphology and behavioral responses to mitigate its impact on individual fitness.High-predation environ-ments often promote specific patterns of brain growth and produce bolder and more proactive populations.Owing to the expense of maintaining neural tissue,relative size indicates the regions most relied upon.In northern redbelly dace Chrosomus eos,as little as 2 weeks of elevated predation pressure,resulted in increased investment in their olfactory bulbs and optic tecta,while the imposition of captivity produced smaller,less symmetric hypothalami.Taken together,these results suggest that an individual could potentially become better able to detect a threat,and simultaneously less inclined to react to it,making the impact of either change in isolation is difficult to discern.Here,we compared interindividual variation in gross brain morphology,risk-taking tactics in a novel arena(shy-bold personality),and responding to olfactory cues(proactive/reac-tive stress-coping style).We hypothesized that olfactory investment would positively correlate with response intensity to predator cue concen-tration and respond across a wider range of cue concentrations,while hypothalamus size would correlate with shyness and reactivity.exposure to heightened risk produced more bold/proactive individuals,with larger olfactory bulbs and smaller hypothalami.However,the direction of the correlation between hypothalamus size and behavior varied by treatment,and olfactory investment only corresponded with response intensity amongst proactive individuals.Our findings illustrate the potential pitfalls of relating gross brain morphology to complex behavior and suggest that stress-coping style is a relevant consideration in future studies.

Background:The period following pregnancy is a critical time window when future habits with respect to physical activity(PA) and sedentary behavior(SB) are established;therefore,it warrants guidance.The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize public health-oriented country-specific postpartum PA and SB guidelines worldwide.Methods:To identity guidelines published since 2010,we performed a(a) systematic search of 4 databases(CINAHL,Global Health,PubMed,and SPORTDiscus),(b) structured repeatable web-based search separately for 194 countries,and(c) separate web-based search.Only the most recent guideline was included for each country.Results:We identified 22 countries with public health-oriented postpartum guidelines for PA and 11 countries with SB guidelines.The continents with guidelines included europe(n=12),Asia(n=5),Oceania(n=2),Africa(n=1),North America(n=1),and South America(n=1).The most common benefits recorded for PA included weight control/management(n=10),reducing the risk of postpartum depression or depressive symptoms(n=9),and improving mood/well-being(n=8).Postpartum guidelines specified exercises to engage in,including pelvic floor exercises(n=17);muscle strengthening,weight training,or resistance exercises(n=13);aerobics/general aerobic activity(n=13);walking(n=11);cycling(n=9);and swimming(n=9).eleven guidelines remarked on the interaction between PA and breastfeeding;several guidelines stated that PA did not impact breast milk quantity(n=7),breast milk quality(n=6),or infant growth(n=3).For SB,suggestions included limiting long-term sitting and interrupting sitting with PA.Conclusion:Country-specific postpartum guidelines for PA and SB can help promote healthy behaviors using a culturally appropriate context while providing specific guidance to public health practitioners.

The malaria transmission in Anhui province China

Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum cases have opposite trends in Anhui China in the past decade.Long term and seasonal trends in the transmission rate of P.falciparum in Africa has been well studied,however that of P.vivax transmitted by Anopheles sinensis in China has not been investigated.There is a lot of work on the relationship between P.vivax cases and climatic factors in China,with sometimes contradicting results.However,how climatic factors affect transmission rate of P.vivax in China is unknown.We used Anhui province as an example to analyze the recent transmission dynamics where two types of malaria have been reported with differing etiologies.We examined breakpoints of the P.vivax and P.falciparum malaria long term dynamics in the recent decade.For locally transmitted P.vivax malaria,we analyzed the transmission rate and its seasonality using the combined human and mosquitos SIR-SI model with time-varied mosquito biting rate.We identified the effects of meteorological factors on the seasonality in transmission rate using a GAM model.For the imported P.falciparum ma-laria,we analyzed the potential reason for the observed increase in cases.The breakpoints of P.vivax and P.falciparum dynamics happened in a same year,2010.The seasonality in the transmission rate of P.vivax malaria was high(42.4%)and was linearly associated with temperature and nonlinearly with rainfall.The abrupt increase in im-ported P.falciparum cases after the breakpoint was significantly related to the increased annual Chinese investment in Africa.Under the conditions of the existing vectors of malaria,long-term trends in climatic fac-tors,and increasing trend in migration to/from endemic areas and imported malaria cases,we should be cautious of the possibility of the reestablishment of malaria in regions where it has been eliminated or the establishment of other vector-borne diseases.
