Caffeine is present in products marketed for weight loss, with the purpose of increasing thermogenesis and lipid metabolism. The dosage declared by the product manufacturer, or even its presence, is not always correctly described on the label. This work aimed to investigate the undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations by a high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection(HPLC-DAD) method. From one hundred products purchased through Brazilian e-commerce, seventeen contained caffeine, either naturally or synthetically added to formulation. The caffeine-containing samples were confirmed by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-mS/mS) method, and adulteration was clearly proven in five products. The content highest caffeine contained 448.8 mg per dose. Other irregularities were also found; nevertheless, the most serious was the addition of synthetic drugs without asking the consumers. Additional drugs expose the consumer to more possible side-effects as well as deleterious drug interactions. Intentional adulteration with any unlabeled substance is typically motivated by a desire to increase or alter the claimed effect of the marketed product to gain a commercial advantage.

Khaya anthotheca is a hardwood species from Africa and recently introduced to Brazil. This species yields high-quality wood for diverse applications, but little has been done toward an effective propagation method for large-scale production in nurseries. We evaluated the effects of different concentrations of macro and micronutrients（i.e., 100, 50 and 25% of the concentration of a referenced solution） combined with indole-3-butyric acid（IBA） at 0 and 2 g L-1 on the survival rate of mini-stumps and the survival and adventitious rooting of K. anthotheca mini-cuttings. The mini-stumps were grown from a source of seeds imported from Ghana, West Africa. The ministumps survived at a high rate（97%）. Consistently high shoot yields were obtained from the mini-stumps（average of 1.8 per mini-stump）. High survival percentage of minicuttings and adventitious rooting were observed when solutions with 100 and 50% of the nutrients concentration were combined with 2 g L-1 IBA. Histological sections analyzed through optical microscopy indicated the tissues from mini-cutting stems were juvenile, which might have stimulated adventitious rooting. These results have important implications for further work aimed at establishing propagation strategies for K. anthotheca, which are of prime importance for assisting breeding programs of this species.

In this report,we present a systematic study on the preparation of Co:ZnO ceramics via a standard solid-state route from different Co precursors(Co_(3)O_(4),CoO,and metallic Co)and atmospheres(O_(2)and Ar).Particular emphasis is given to defect chemistry engineering and the sintering growth ***-principles calculations based on density functional theory are employed to determine the formation en-ergy of the main point defects in ZnO and Co:ZnO *** on the theoretical results,a set of chemical reactions is *** microstructural characterization is also performed to determine the degree of Co incorporation into the ZnO *** samples prepared in Ar atmosphere and metal-lic Co present the highest Co solubility limit(lower apparent Co incorporation activation energy)due to the incongruent ZnO *** of the parameters of the sintering growth kinetics reveals that Co_(3)O_(4)is the best sintering additive to achieve larger grain sizes,and possible higher densi-ties,in both sintering atmospheres,while metallic Co is the best to achieve the smallest grain size with higher Co concentration and homogeneous spatial distribution for a subsequent reduction of *** results show that the sintering in O_(2)effectively promotes zinc vacancies in the ZnO structure,while the sintering in Ar promotes zinc interstitial *** findings contribute to understanding the preparation of Co-doped ZnO ceramics and the sintering growth kinetics,which may improve the state of the art in processing the material at both bulk and nanometric scales.

The study of neuronal plasticity under pathological conditions is now a major point of focus on the field of neurological recovery. After the repeated failure of acute neuroprotection strategies for stroke treatment, the design of studies aimed at promoting the reconstruction of neuronal networks has become essential. methods for the delivery of therapeutic agents on a steady dosage, thus preventing pharmacological peaks or excessive manipulation of experimental animals, are thus required. Additionally, methods that allow the visualization of neurological rem.deling processes are fundamental to the understanding of how a therapeutic agent exerts its function. Here we describe how the use of miniosmotic pumps for the steady delivery of such agents, together with tract tracer injections, can be combined to unveil important information on how the brain changes after stroke and how therapeutic agents promote brain rem.deling recovery.

One Pr（Ⅲ） lanthanide ion complex was initially synthesized and characterized by TGA-DSC in air atmosphere, as well as characterized by CHN elemental analysis, defining the stoichiometric ratio as Pr（DmBz）3. The gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition were also monitored in N2 atmosphere employing TGA/FT-IR system. A crystal structure is obtained by state-of-the-art powder X-rays diffraction methods measured in conventional laboratory equipment and refined by the Rietveld method, which defined it as a monoclinic system of the space group P21/C with a polymeric crystal structure, [Pr（DmBZ）3]n. FT-IR theoretical spectrum and time-dependent density functional theory（TD-DFT） were calculated from TGA-DSC and crystalline system data. The experimental and theoretical FT-IR spectra present a high correlation degree when the main stretching bands are compared, while the energy transfer（HOmO - LUmO） in their neighborhoods suggests the main contributions of the light-emitting states.

The effect of different rainfall patterns on surface runoff,infiltration and thus soil losses and sediment concentrations are still in the focus of current *** most simulated rainfall experiments,pre-cipitation is applied at a fixed intensity for a fixed ***,the impact of rainfall patterns on soil erosion processes may be different varying the rainfall duration and intensity that produces an event with similar rainfall erosivity ***-five rainfall events were applied on micro-scale runoff plots in a soil covered with corn straw to evaluate the sediment yield and runoff *** different rainfall types were composed by association of duration(Dur)and intensity(IP)with the same erosivity *** Dur varied from 38 to 106 min and the IP varied from 75.0 to 44.6 mm h^(-1).The sediment yield varied from 1.89±1.26 g m^(-2) to 4.02±2.66 g m^(-2) and runoff ranged from 16.9±8.74 mm to 32.63±10.67 mm with highest rates occurring with high intensity and low *** highest rainfall intensity provides the maximum sediment yield(0.138 g m^(-2) min^(-1))and runoff rates(0.87 mm min^(-1)).The time to start surface runoff varied from 14 to 19.2 min and it was longer in treatments with longer durations and low precipitation *** difference was found in the amount of sediments applying rain with the same erosivity and different associations of duration and ***,the intensity and duration of the rain,with the same erosivity,altered the amount and time of *** rainfall experiments with con-stant intensity and fixed time,the erosion rates depend on the duration of the applied ***,the results of this study can contribute to the development of new perspectives in the design of water erosion experiments with simulated rain considering the duration,intensity and also the association of these variables to produce rainfall that delivery the same soil erosion capacity.

Improving wood volume predictions in dry tropical forest in the semi-arid Brazil

The volumetric variability of dry tropical forests in Brazil and the scarcity of studies on the subject show the need for the development of techniques that make it possible to obtain adequate and accurate wood volume *** this study,we analyzed a database of thinning trees from a forest management plan in the Contendas de SincoráNational Forest,southwestern Bahia State,*** data set included a total of 300 trees with a trunk diameter ranging from 5 to 52 ***,validation and statistical selection of four volumetric m.dels were *** to the difference in height values for the same diameter and the low correlation between both variables,we do not suggest m.dels which only use the diameter at breast height(DBH)variable as a predictor because they accommodate the largest estimation *** comparing the best single entry m.del(Hohenald-Krenn)with the Spurr m.del(best fit m.del),it is noted that the exclusion of height as a predictor causes the values of 136.44 and 0.93 for Akaike information criterion(AIC)and adjusted determination coefficient(R2 adj),which are poorer than the second best m.del(Schumacher-Hall).Regarding the minimum sample size,errors in estimation(root mean square error(RmSE)and bias)of the best m.del decrease as the sample size increases,especially when a larger number of trees with DBH≥15.0 cm are randomly *** sampling by diameter class produces smaller volume prediction errors than random sampling,especially when considering all *** summary,the Spurr and Schumacher-Hall m.dels perform *** m.dels suggest that the total variance explained in the estimates is not less than 95%,producing reliable forecasts of the total volume with *** estimates indicate that the bias around the average is not greater than 7%.Our results support the decision to use regression methods to build m.dels and estimate their parameters,seeking stratification strategies in diameter classes for the sample trees.
