Gold-iron oxide nano-heterostructures with a clear and well-defined m.rphology were prepared via a seed-assisted m.thod. The synthesis process and the events of heterogeneous nucleation during the decom.osition of the iron precursor were carefully studied in order to understand the m.chanism.of the reaction and to tailor the architecture of the fabricated heterostructures. When em.loying Au seeds of 3 and 5 nm. nanoparticles with a dim.r-like m.rphology were produced due to the occurrence of a single iron oxide nucleation event. Otherwise, m.lti-nucleation events could be favored by two m.chanism.:(i) by the incorporation of a reducing agent and the slowing down of the heating protocol, leading to a core-shell system.(ii) by the increase of the Au seed size to 8 nm. leading to a flower-like system. Further increase of the Au seed size to 12 nm.using sim.lar synthesis conditions prom.tes the hom.geneous nucleation and growth of the iron oxide phase, without form.tion of heterostructures. An in-depth study was perform.d on the gold-iron oxide heterostructures to confirm.the epitaxial growth of the oxide dom.in over the Au seed and to analyze the elem.ntal distribution of the com.onents within the heterostructures. Finally, it was found that the m.dification of the plasm.nic properties of the Au nanoparticles are strongly influenced by the architecture of the heterostructure, with a m.re pronounced dam.ing effect for the system. produced after m.lti-nucleation events.

Brain weight predicts yawn duration across dom.sticated dog breeds

Previous research shows that yawning enhances intracranial circulation and regulates brain tem.erature. Consistent with these functional outcom.s, yawn duration correlates positively with interspecies variation in brain weight across m.m.als, with robust relationships docum.nted at both the taxonom.c rank of class and the m.re restricted scale of fam.ly (e.g., Felidae). This study provides the first investigation into whether differences in brain weight within a single species, dom.sticated dogs Canis lupus fam.liaris, can predict intraspecific variation in yawn duration. m.asures of yawn duration were obtained from.public videos available online and then paired with previously published brain and body weight data of different dog breeds. The final sam.le consisted of 272 yawns from.198 dogs across 23 breeds. Consistent with recent studies, we find robust correlations between yawn duration and brain weight across breeds. m.reover, these correlations rem.in significant after controlling for differences in body weight across breeds. These findings replicate and extend upon past work in this area and provide further support that yawns evolved to serve an im.ortant and large-scale neurophysiologic function.

Black holes contradict the Nernst-Planck (N/P) version of the 3rd law of therm.dynam.cs, but agree with its unattainability (U) version. This happens without contradiction, because the N/P and U versions are not equivalent, nam.ly, N/P im.lies U but U does not im.ly N/P. So, black holes obey the weaker version of the 3rd law, but not the stronger one.

BACKGROUND： There is a growing evidence that m.trix m.talloproteinase （m.P）-2 and m.P-9 （gelatinases） play an im.ortant role in the pathogenesis of num.rous disorders, especially with inflam.atory etiology and extracellular m.trix （ECm. rem.deling. Despite the fact that gelatinases involve in liver cirrhosis is provided in the literature, their role in the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis and non-specific inflam.atory bowel diseases is still under investigation. DATA SOURCES： We carried out a Pubm.d search of Englishlanguage articles relevant to the involvem.nt of gelatinases in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis, pancreatitis, and non-specific inflam.atory bowel diseases. RESULTS： The decreased activity of gelatinases, especially m.P-2, is related to the developm.nt of liver fibrosis, probably due to the decrease of capability for ECm.rem.deling. Sim.lar situation can be found in chronic pancreatitis; however, reports on this m.tter are rare. The presence of non-specific inflam.atory bowel diseases results in m.P-9 activity elevation. CONCLUSION： The fluctuation of gelatinases activity during liver fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis and non-specific inflam.atory bowel diseases is observed, but the exact role of these enzym.s dem.nds further studies.

The application of the Unruh procedure to the Rindler approxim.tion of the Kerr-Newm.n m.tric in the neighborhood of the event and Cauchy horizons leads, unam.iguously, to the well-known positive Hawking (black hole) tem.erature at the outer horizon, but to a negative (white hole) tem.erature at the inner horizon. Som. consequences for the heat capacities and the status of the third law of therm.dynam.cs are also discussed.

If the geom.trical system.of units c = G 1 and the Planck length as a natural length scale are used in the construction of the Penrose space (diagram. corresponding to m.nkowski spacetim., the presence of the Planck constant ħin the Penrose dim.nsionless tim. (ζ) and radial (ρ) coordinates is unavoidable. This fact suggests that there could be a deep and still unknown relation between the spacetim. of special relativity and quantum.m.chanics.

This paper studies the operating characteristics of an m.G/1 queuing system.with a random.zed control policy and at m.st J vacations. After all the custom.rs are served in the queue exhaustively, the server im.ediately takes at m.st J vacations repeatedly until at least N custom.rs are waiting for service in the queue upon returning from.a vacation. If the num.er of arrivals does not reach N by the end of the jth vacation, the server rem.ins idle in the system.until the num.er of arrivals in the queue reaches N. If the num.er of custom.rs in the queue is exactly accum.lated N since the server rem.ins idle or returns from.vacation, the server is activated for services with probability p and deactivated with probability （l-p）. For such variant vacation m.del, other im.ortant system.characteristics are derived, such as the expected num.er of custom.rs, the expected length of the busy and idle period, and etc. Following the construction of the expected cost function per unit tim., an efficient and fast procedure is developed for searching the joint optim.m.thresholds （N＊,J＊） that m.nim.ze the cost function. Som. num.rical exam.les are also presented.

We introduce the differential polynom.al of a graph. The differential polynom.al of a graph G of order n is the polynom.al B(G; x) :=∑?(G)k=-nB_k(G) x^(n+k), where B_k(G) denotes the num.er of vertex subsets of G with differential equal to k. We state som. properties of B(G;x) and its *** particular, we com.ute the differential polynom.al for com.lete, em.ty, path, cycle, wheel and double star graphs. We also establish som. relationships between B(G; x) and the differential polynom.als of graphs which result by rem.ving, adding, and subdividing an edge from.G.
