Underutilized Plant Species in Far West Nepal

Underutilized plant species help to alleviate common food insufficiencies by providing alternative food supply. They also complement primary health care, furnishing raw materials where the cultivation of staple cereal crops is least feasible and health care is pursued indigenously. Research and promotion of extraction, utilization, and conservation of underutilized species lead to exploration of new staple crops and motivate people to consume in a sustainable manner. The present study describes the current status, uses, and management of underutilized plant species in Far West Nepal. The relative importance of 49 underutilized plant species was computed employing a Relative Importance (RI) technique. The use-values assigned to the species fall into six use-categories: beverage, fodder, food & edible, medicinal, vegetable and veterinary. A total of 22 species appeared in multiple use-categories, while the rest were characterized by a single use-category. Based on relative importance and frequency, Ficus semicordata, Debregesia longifolia, Girardinea diversifolia, Hydrocotyle nepalensis, Garuga pinnata, Aloe vera and Pyrus pashia offer the most potential for future. Underutilized plants proved important to folk medicine and food. These species persist because they remain useful to local people as means of subsistence, production, and primary health care. The findings are important so far as they point up the role of underutilized plants in national food security policy and health care, spelling out their potentialities and cross cutting relationships.

Some New Band Characteristics in One-Dimensional Plasma Dielectric Photonic Crystals

Propagation of electromagnetic waves in one-dimensional plasma dielectric photonic crystals, the superlattice structure consisting of alternating plasma and dielectric materials, is studied theoretically for oblique incidence by using the transfer matrix method. Our results show that complete photonic band gaps for all polarizations can be obtained in one-dimensional plasma dielectric photonic crystals. These structures can exhibit a new type of band or gap, for the incidence other than the normal one, near frequencies where the electric permittivity of the plasma layer changes sign. This new band or gap arises, from the dispersive properties of the plasma layer, only for transverse magnetic polarized waves, and its width increases with the increase in incident angle. This differential behavior under polarization can be utilized in the design of an efficient polarization splitter. The existence of both photonic gaps and resonance transmission bands is demonstrated for experimentally realizable structures such as double electromagnetic barriers.

Vibration and buckling analyses of nanobeams embedded in an elastic medium

Boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials are used as shape functions in the Rayleigh–Ritz method to investigate vibration and buckling of nanobeams embedded in an elastic medium. The present formulation is based on the nonlocal Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The eigen value equation is developed for the buckling and vibration analyses. The orthogonal property of these polynomials makes the computation easier with less computational effort. It is observed that the frequency and critical buckling load parameters are dependent on the temperature, elastic medium, small scale coefficient,and length-to-diameter ratio. These observations are useful in the mechanical design of devices that use carbon nanotubes.

Buckling analysis of nanobeams with exponentially varying stiffness by differential quadrature method

We present the application of differential quadrature（DQ） method for the buckling analysis of nanobeams with exponentially varying stiffness based on four different beam theories of Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko, Reddy, and *** formulation is based on the nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. New results are presented for the guided and simply supported guided boundary conditions. Numerical results are obtained to investigate the effects of the nonlocal parameter,length-to-height ratio, boundary condition, and nonuniform parameter on the critical buckling load parameter. It is observed that the critical buckling load decreases with increase in the nonlocal parameter while the critical buckling load parameter increases with increase in the length-to-height ratio.

Effect of growth on wood traits in seed-raised plantations of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.

We studied the effect of growth on wood anatomical dimensions and specific gravity of seed-raised plantation wood of Dalbergia sissoo with twelve trees of different diameters and similar ages. Fiber length ranged from 925 to1,287 lm, fiber-diameter was 19–23 lm, wall thickness was4.2–5.4 lm, vessel-element-length was 152–188 lm, vesselelement-diameter was 152–200 lm, and specific gravity was0.59–0.72. Growth parameters including tree height, diameter at breast height, net primary productivity and net ecosystem productivity were significantly and positively *** parameters showed non-significant positive relationships with fiber-length, fiber diameter, wall thickness, vessel element length, and vessel element diameter. The trend of wood traits increased with growth. Specific gravity showed non-significant negative relationships with growth parameters. Although the growth rate had varied relationships with wood properties, as reported by various workers, the wood element dimensions showed no significant relationship with growth parameters and there was little effect of growth rate on wood traits in seed-raised plantation of D. sissoo.

Latitudinal fluctuation in global concentration of CO2 and CH4 from shortwave infrared spectral observation by GOSAT during COVID-19

Various countries have rapidly implemented strict actions to slow the blowout of *** events were dis-regarded,and anthropogenic activities such as industrial and transport systems were at a *** countries were on lockdown,including the largest emitters of carbon *** to these lockdowns,anthropogenic activities have been reduced and reported that air quality improves at a regional scale in many countries,including ***,the current study using Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite(GOSAT/IBUKI)datasets to monitor the fluctuation of the average global concentration of dry mole fractions of atmospheric Methane(CH_(4))and Carbon Dioxide(CO_(2))during these pandemic lockdowns from January to June *** emphasize no significant reduction in the average concentration of dry mole fractions of atmospheric CH_(4) over the globe,but a minor reduction was observed in global CO_(2) *** average concentration of both gases compares at each ten-degree *** study reveals that,against the regional breakdowns,these short time lockdowns are not enough to control the concentration of these greenhouse gases at a larger scale,such as 10°latitude and globally,except for a minor reduction in CO_(2) concentration.

Characterization of saline soil for the halophytes of largest inland saline wetland of India using geospatial technology

About 23%of the surface area and 44%of the volume of all the lakes are occupied by saline lakes in the ***,agricultural diversion,illegal encroachment,pollution,and invasive species could cause these lakes to dry up completely or partially by *** saltpan encroachment is causing Sambhar,India’s largest saline lake,to shrink by 4.23%every *** study aims to characterize the soil parameters where halophytes are growing.A literature survey was conducted for halophytes and soil *** study area was divided into four zones for stratified random *** sampling was conducted in February *** soil indicators for halophyte selected were pH,electrical conductivity,moisture,salinity,organic carbon,and organic *** obtained results were interpolated in the geospatial platform for soil characteristic *** is found that no research is conducted on halophytes of the *** on soil are also inconsistent and only six common parameters could be *** show that the pH ranged 9.37-7.66,electrical conductivity was 16.1-0.38,moisture 23.37%-1.2%,organic carbon 3.29%-0.15%,organic matter 5.6%-0.2%,and salinity 8.86%-0.72%.Though these results show improved condition as compared to last few years,in long term,the lake is *** the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration(2021-2030),if these causes are not addressed,the ecosystem may completely dry up.

Flotation tree analysis for recovery of sillimanite from red sediments

In this paper an attempt is made to recover sillimanite by flotation tree analysis process and conventional flotation process from non magnetic fraction of red *** experimental results of both the processes are *** data reveal that the deslimed sample contains 33.2%(by weight) total heavy minerals and out of which the sillimanite mineral content is 3.6%(by weight).It is observed that flotation tree analysis needs 10 cells to get five output products and where as conventional flotation process needs 15 cells to recover similar grade of five output ***,flotation tree analysis is not only economic process but also efficient process(to say efficient process,the tree analysis product should be higher grade).
