Land Use Capability and the Sustainable Scale: An Overview of Agriculture in São Paulo State, Brazil

Establishing a sustainable scale in natural resources management enables effective economic and ecological policies and guarantees the long-term sustainability of economic production. In agriculture, land evaluations determine the land use sustainable scales, that is, those that avoid land degradation and allow the provision of food, wood, energy, and ecosystem services over time. The paper assessed São Paulo State’s agricultural sustainability by analyzing the current land use adequacy to the land use capability map that follows FAO 1976 “guide for land evaluation” and was applied to São Paulo by the State Agricultural Secretariat. Results indicate inefficiencies in land use at the state level, where more than one-third of agricultural lands do not satisfy technical land capability indications. According to technical land use capability, more than 4.5 million hectares are being underused (economic inefficiency) and another 2.2 million hectares are being overused (environmental inefficiency). Pasturelands represent the most unsustainable land use, where 3.7 million hectares are allocated in high quality lands with high agricultural production potential, and another 0.7 million hectares are allocated in lands with very low quality for agriculture, most of than area degraded. To achieve sustainability, lands with high agricultural production potential should be used to improve agriculture and food production and, on the other hand, lands with very low agricultural production potential should be used for wood production, agroforestry, ecotourism and natural ecosystems conservation. Our results provide a framework for improving land use policies in São Paulo State and highlight an opportunity to achieve land use sustainability.

Femtosecond laser-assisted deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty in phototherapeutic keratectomy versus the big-bubble technique in keratoconus

AIM：To compare the functional and anatomic results of femtosecond laser（FSL）-assisted deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty（DALK） associated with phototherapeutic keratectomy（PTK） and FSL-assisted DALK performed using the big-bubble technique in ***：During the first phase of the study,an electron microscopy histopathology pilot study was conducted that included four unsuitable donor corneas divided into two groups：in FSL group,FSL lamellar cuts were performed on two corneas and in FSL＋PTK group,PTK was performed at the stromal beds of two corneas after FSL lamellar cuts were *** the second phase of the study,a randomized clinical trial was conducted that included two treatment groups of patients with keratoconus：group 1（n=14 eyes） underwent FSL-assisted DALK associated with PTK and group 2（n=12 eyes） underwent FSL-assisted DALK associated with the bigbubble *** main outcome measures were the postoperative visual acuity（VA） and optical coherence tomography（OCT） measurements,confocal microscopic findings,and contrast ***：In the pilot study,histopathology showed a more regular stromal bed in the FSL＋PTK *** the clinical trial,group 1 had significantly worse best spectaclecorrected VA and contrast sensitivity（P〈0.05 for both comparisons）.The residual stromal bed measured by OCT was significantly（P〈0.05） thicker in group *** microscopy detected opacities only at the donor-receptor interface in group ***：Patients with keratoconus treated with FSL-assisted DALK performed using the big-bubble technique fare better than treated with FSL-assisted DALK associated with PTK.

Simulated Experiments for Teaching Mutually-Coupled Circuits CAD Techniques Using Analytic and Finite Element Solutions

The paper describes an approach to teaching mutually-coupled circuits CAD techniques to undergraduate students pursuing a degree course in electrical engineering or physics, and explains how a series of simulated experiments may be incorporated into the existing subjects. The simulated experiments make use of a two-dimensional open-access software based on the finite-element method. At the laboratory meetings, the students learn how to set up field problems for solution, and how to examine the results. Simulation tasks based on three axisymmetric open-boundary problems are used to introduce different numeric techniques to compute inductance and magnetic forces. The paper takes the reader to a step-by-step simulation journey, and provides all the basic elements required for further exploration of axially-symmetric systems.

First Otoliths/Collagen/Bacterial Cellulose Nanocomposites as a Potential Scaffold for Bone Tissue Regeneration

In the present work, we report the first bionanocomposite material formed by otoliths/ collagen/ bacterial cellulose (BC) networks (OCBC). This biomaterial is an osteoinductor or be, stimulates the bone regeneration, enabling bigger migration of the cells for formation of the bone tissue regeneration mainly because nanotolith are rich in minerals considered essential to the bone mineralization process on a protein matrix (otolin). The objective in this study was to analyze the regeneration capacity of bone defects treated with this bionanocomposite. Histological experiments shows bone tissue formation with high regularity, higher osteoblast activity and osteo-reabsorption activities areas. The results suggest the potential for this new biomaterial as a scaffold for bone tissue regeneration.

REE Distribution Pattern in Plants and Soils from Pitinga Mine—Amazon,Brazil

The rare earth element contents of plant specimens of the families Rhamnaceae, Ampelozizyphus amazonicus Ducke (local name: Saracura-Mirá) and of Pteridófitas from genus Gleichenia sp. e Adiantum sp. (ferns) were determined and compared to those of the soils, in the Pitinga Mine area, Amazon, Brazil. The Pitinga mine district has large tin reserves genetically related to two granite bodies, Agua Boa e Madeira, both intrusive in volcanic rocks included in the Iricoumé Group. This deposit contains, also, bodies of cryolite and rare metals, such as Zr, Nb, Ta, Y and REE. The REE biogeochemical signatures, shown by the collected plants, reflect the patterns of the respective soils. The Eu and Ce anomalies shown by some plant samples are inherited from soils, as well. The higher contents of REE observed in fern samples confirm they are accumulators and reflect the abundance of REE in the soils of Pitinga Mine region. Additionally, that supports their potential use in geochemical exploration and bioremediation. The results of this study stress the importance of biogeochemical research integrated with geochemistry of soils, rocks and minerals.

This research aims to evaluate walkability as a strategy of urban mobility in relation to physical characteristics of accessibility and attractiveness from public sidewalks characteristics in the city of Passo Fundo/RS-Brazil using the IAAPE （indicators of attraction and pedestrian accessibility） method. The concept of walkability corresponds to the simple act of walking in a pleasant way along the footpaths. Therefore, the IAAPE method was used, which considers aspects of connectivity, comfort, conviviality, coexistence, convenience, clarity and commitment in relation to the space evaluated. In this study, 40 adults, elderly, pregnant and wheelchair subjects were interviewed for evaluating the importance criteria on public sidewalks for a given type of user. In general, reduced sidewalk dimensions and obstacle presence are the main displacement hurdles in most of the cases analyzed. Thus, improvements are needed to avoid stress situations that arise from daily routine, to encourage physical activities, accessibility, and the emergence of meeting and leisure points.
