Cell thickness dependence of electrically tunable infrared reflectors based on polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals

We reported here the fabrication of the elec- trically tunable infrared （IR） reflectors based on the polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal （PSCLC） with negative dielectric anisotropy. A systematic study of the influence of cell gap on the electrically tunable reflection bandwidth was performed. When a direct current （DC） electric field was ap- plied, the reflection bandwidth red shifted in the cells with small cell gap, whereas the bandwidth broadening was ob- served in the cells with large cell gap. It is therefore reasonable to deduct that the reflection is dictated by the pitch gradient steepness which strongly relies on the cell thickness. the re- sults reveal that for making PSCLC based IR reflector windows with electrically induced bandwidth broadening, a minimal cell gap thickness is required. the resulted IR reflectors pos- sess a short native switching time and long-term operation stability, and are potentially applicable as smart energy saving windows in buildings and automobiles.

Immunogenic antigens for vaccination are often created through the production of recombinant proteins using Escherichia coli.1 As a side product,aggregates called inclusion bodies(IBs)are formed,containing largely misfolded forms of the overexpressed recombinant protein.2 the effect of IBs on the immune system and whether they can be used as effective vaccine products remain *** non-native conformation of proteins upon accumulation in IBs abrogates their use as vaccines aimed at generating high-affinity antibodies.3 However,IBs exhibit unique properties,including mechanical and thermal stability due to their intrinsic particulate nature,biocompatibility,high antigenic content,low toxicity and relative resistance to *** characteristics make IBs attractive as an antigenic vaccine formulation for t cell responses to linear *** IBs can trigger adaptive cellular responses initiated via uptake by dendritic cells for presentation to t cells is unknown.

the first hydrodynamic instability growth measurements with three-dimensional(3D) surface-roughness modulations were performed on CH shell spherical implosions at the National Ignition Facility(NIF) [G. H. Miller, E. I. Moses, and C. R. Wuest, Opt. Eng. 43, 2841(2004)]. the initial capsule outer-surface amplit.des were increased approximately four times, compared with the standard specifications, to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, helping to qualify a technique for measuring small 3D modulations. the instability growth measurements were performed using x-ray through-foil radiography based on time-resolved pinhole imaging. Averaging over 15 similar images significantly increased the signal-to-noise ratio, making possible a comparison with 3D simulations. At a convergence ratio of～2.4, the measured modulation levels were～3 times larger than those simulated based on the growth of the known imposed initial surface modulations. Several hypotheses are discussed, including increased instability growth due to modulations of the oxygen content in the bulk of the capsule. Future experiments will be focused on measurements with standard 3D ‘nativeroughness' capsules as well as with deliberately imposed oxygen modulations.

Introduction: [18F]-fluoro-methylcholine (FCH) PEt/Ct and MRI with diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) have insufficient performance in lymph node staging of primary prostate cancer by themselves, but the combination may perform better. We aim to prospectively determine the diagnostic performance of combined FCH PEt and MRI for lymph node staging. Methods: this was a single site study of diagnostic accuracy in a well-defined group of 21 consecutive high-risk primary prostate cancer patients (>30% chance of lymph node metastases) in a large community hospital. We performed FCH PEt/Ct and MRI with DW-MRI prior to endoscopic extended pelvic lymph node dissection (EPLND). PEt was fused and interpreted together with various MRI image sets (t1, t2, DWIBS) and was only scored positive when a lymph node seen on MRI coincided with increased focal FCH uptake on PEt. Findings were compared with detailed histological evaluation, on a per-patient and per-region level. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of combined PEt-MRI. Results: 14 out of 21 patients had metastatic lymph nodes with 37 out of 164 evaluable regions harboring metastases. On a per-patient analysis, PEt-MRI had a sensitivity/specificity of 79/100% with a PPV/NPV of 100/77%. On a per-region analysis (n = 164) these figure were 65/99% and 96/91%, respectively. Conclusions: Combined DW-MRI and FCH PEt/Ct has a very high positive predictive value in high risk prostate cancer patients. If confirmed in larger series a positive combined scan may safely allow cancellation of surgical staging in selected patients, depending on local protocols in N1 M0 patients.
