Feeding Soy with Probiotic Attenuates Obesity-Related Metabolic Syndrome Traits in Obese Zucker Rats

Obesity has reached pandemic levels, being a major concern of health. Overweight and obesity are the precursors for metabolic disturbances in the body. Probiotics and prebiotics administrations have shown to reduce the characteristics of obesity-induced metabolic syndrome in animals. The present study examined the effects of dietary supplementation of soybean meal and bifidobacterium longum (bb536) singly and in combination on obesity-related traits in obese Zucker rats. Control group rats were fed with AIN93-M diet and treatment groups were fed with soybean meal (5 % or 10%) and bifidobacterium longum (0.1%) in single and combinations for 100 days. Weight gain, feed intake, and % of fat in liver were recorded. Serum biochemical parameters such as cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin and glucose were analyzed. Activities of liver enzymatic markers (alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma glutamyl-transferase (GGT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)) were determined. Dietary supplementation of soymeal at 10% with b. longum reduced the weight gain by 30% and liver fat content by 35%. Feeding bifidobacterium longum alone did not have any effect in analyzing serum biochemical parameters and activity of liver enzymatic markers. Serum glucose and insulin levels in rats were lowered by 18% - 24% and 22% - 25% respectively when fed with administration of combinational feeding of soymeal at 5% and 10% with bifidobacterium longum. Hepatic enzyme activity was reduced by 1.3 fold with the combinational diet at higher concentration (soy 10%). The present study provides evidence that supplementation with soymeal with probiotic, b. longum attenuates the metabolic disorders induced by obesity in obese Zucker rats.

Trochanteric bursitis is a common cause of musculoskeletal pain and often requires medical intervention and should be distinguished from sciatica and irradiating pain of pelvic and spinal origin. Previously, the etiology of the trochanteric pain syndrome was thought to be caused by inflammation. The current study was performed in order to assess the efficacy of trochanteric injections. Methods: 158 patients were treated for trochanteric bursitis (132 females/26 males, range 22 - 88 years). 59b were treated with corticosteroid injection, 60 with hyaluronate and 39 were injected using a combination of both. Patients were followed by the HOOS score for a minimum of 12 months. Results: Pre-operative HOOS scores were similar in all groups. Following injection, the HOOS score increased from 27 ± 4 to 66 ± 2 after six months and 77 ± 4 after a year. At 12-month follow-up, the average score of patients treated by corticosteroids injection was 44 ± 7 compared with 62 ± 8 for the hyaluronate injected group and 64 ± 6 for the combination injection group. Discussion: It appears that injection therapy is highly efficacious for treating trochanteric bursitis. The effect of hyaluronate or hyaluronate and steroid combination appears to be longer lasting than that of steroid alone.

The aim of the current study was to examine the prevalence of HIV, past six-month illicit drug use, and risk behaviors among a population of heavy drug users living in an urban setting. Although many studies investigate substance use, sex-risk behavior, and HIV by race and gender, no studies have examined these variables simultaneously. The current study seeks to fill this gap in the literature by exploring HIV prevalence among a predominantly heterosexual sample of recent substance users by injection drug use (IDU) status, race, and sex. baseline data from the baltimore site of the NEURO-HIV epidemiologic study was used in this study. This study examines neuropsychological and social-behavioral risk factors of HIV, hepatitis A, hepatitis b, and hepatitis C among both injection and non-injection drug users. Descriptive statistics and chi-square statistics were used in data analyses. blood and urine samples were obtained to test for the presence of recent drug use, viral hepatitis, HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Findings presented here have several important implications for HIV prevention and care among substance users. Intervention programs that incorporate substance use treatment in addition to HIV education, particularly with respect to substance use and sex risk behavior are imperative.
