Cardiorespiratory fitness,white blood cell count,and mortality in men and women

Background:We examined the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness(CRf) and white blood cell count(WBC) with mortality ***: A total of 52,056 apparently healthy adults completed a comprehensive health examination,including a maximal treadmill test and blood chemistry *** was categorized as high,moderate,or low by age and sex;WBC was categorized as sex-specific ***:During 17.8± 9.5 years(mean± SD) of follow-up,a total of 4088 deaths *** regressed jointly,significantly decreased allcause mortality across CRf categories was observed within each quartile of WBC in *** WBC Quartile 1,all-cause mortality hazard ratios(HRs) with a 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were 1.0(referent),1.29(95%CI:1.06-1.57),and 2.03(95%CI:1.42-2.92) for high,moderate,and low CRf categories,respectively(p for trend f cardiovascular disease(CVD) mortality within Quartile 1(p for trend=0.743),there were also similar trends across CRf categories within WBC quartiles in men for both CVD and cancer mortality(p for trend for all).for women,there were no significant trends across CRf categories for mortality outcomes within Quartiles ***,we observed significantly decreased all-cause mortality across CRf categories within WBC Quartile 4(HR=1.05(95%CI:0.76-1.44),HR=1.63(95%CI:1.20-2.21),and HR=1.87(95%CI:1.29-2.69) for high,moderate,and low CRf,respectively(p for trend=0.002)).Similar trends in women were observed for CVD and cancer mortality within WBC Quartile 4 ***:There are strong joint associations between CRf,WBC,and all-cause,CVD,and cancer mortality in men;these associations are less consistent in women.

Association between baseline levels of muscular strength and risk of stroke in later life:The Cooper Center Longitudinal Study

Hepatitis B virus and micro RNAs:Complex interactions affecting hepatitis B virus replication and hepatitis B virusassociated diseases

Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus(HBV) is the leading risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). With nearly 750000 deaths yearly, hepatocellular carcinoma is the second highest cause of cancer-related death in the world. Unfortunately, the molecular mechanisms that contribute to the development of HBV-associated HCC remain incompletely understood. Recently, micro RNAs(mi RNAs), a family of small non-coding RNAs that play a role primarily in post-transcriptional gene regulation, have been recognized as important regulators of cellular homeostasis, and altered regulation of mi RNA expression has been suggested to play a significant role in virus-associated diseases and the development of many cancers. With this in mind, many groups have begun to investigate the relationship between mi RNAs and HBV replication and HBV-associated disease. Multiple findings suggest that some mi RNAs, such as mi R-122, and mi R-125 and mi R-199 family members, are playing a role in HBV replication and HBV-associated disease, including the development of HBV-associated HCC. In this review, we discuss the current state of our understanding of the relationship between HBV and mi RNAs, including how HBV affects cellular mi RNAs, how these mi RNAs impact HBV replication, and the relationship between HBV-mediated mi RNA regulation and HCC development. We also address the impact of challenges in studying HBV, such as the lack of an effective model system for infectivity and a reliance on transformed cell lines, on our understanding of the relationship between HBV and mi RNAs, and proposepotential applications of mi RNA-related techniques that could enhance our understanding of the role mi RNAs play in HBV replication and HBV-associated disease, ultimately leading to new therapeutic options and improved patient outcomes.

Discovering plasticity models without stress data

We propose an approach for data-driven automated discovery of material laws,which we call EUCLID(Efficient Unsupervised Constitutive Law Identification and Discovery),and we apply it here to the discovery of plasticity models,including arbitrarily shaped yield surfaces and isotropic and/or kinematic hardening *** approach is unsupervised,i.e.,it requires no stress data but only full-field displacement and global force data;it delivers interpretable models,i.e.,models that are embodied by parsimonious mathematical expressions discovered through sparse regression of a potentially large catalog of candidate functions;it is one-shot,i.e.,discovery only needs one *** material model library is constructed by expanding the yield function with a fourier series,whereas isotropic and kinematic hardening is introduced by assuming a yield function dependency on internal history variables that evolve with the plastic *** selecting the most relevant fourier modes and identifying the hardening behavior,EUCLID employs physics knowledge,i.e.,the optimization problem that governs the discovery enforces the equilibrium constraints in the bulk and at the loaded boundary of the *** promoting regularization is deployed to generate a set of solutions out of which a solution with low cost and high parsimony is automatically *** virtual experiments,we demonstrate the ability of EUCLID to accurately discover several plastic yield surfaces and hardening mechanisms of different complexity.

Limited Contribution of Preferential Dissolution to Radiogenic Uranium Isotope Disequilibrium Observed in Weathered Moraines

Radiogenic uranium isotope disequilibrium(^(234)U/^(238)U) has been used to trace a variety of Earth surface processes,and is usually attributed to direct recoil of ^(234)Th and preferential dissolution of radioactively damaged lattices at the mineral ***,the relative contribution of these two mechanisms in the natural environment remains unresolved,making it hard to use the extent of disequilibrium to quantify processes such as *** study tests the contribution of preferential dissolution using well-characterized weathered moraines and river sediments from the southeastern Tibetan *** observations show that weathering of recent moraines where the contribution from direct recoil is negligible and is not associated with depletion of ^(234)U at the mineral *** suggests a limited role for preferential dissolution in this *** attribute this lack of preferential dissolution to a near-to-equilibrium dissolution at the weathering interfaces,with little development of etch pits associated with radioactively damaged energetic sites.
