Morpho-Anatomy of the Echium plantagineum L. (Boraginaceae) Diaspores in Relation with Water Uptake and Germination

Echium plantagineum(Boraginaceae)is native of the Mediterranean regions,has been introduced and become widespread within the American continent(North to South),South Africa,New Zealand and *** plant has seed dormancy,aggressively spreads to infest vast areas of predominantly agricultural land and is considered a toxic weed to *** objectives of this research were:(i)to study the morpho-anatomy of the diaspores of ***;(ii)to identify the pathway of water uptake;and(iii)to characterize the germination and the *** morpho-anatomical studies were carried out analyzing semi-permanent slides of transverse and longitudinal sections of the fruits,seeds and ***,histochemical and conventional staining techniques by using stereoscopic,optical and scanning electron microscopy were *** the diaspores,the water uptake pathway was determined by fast green staining,germination tests were performed and the morpho-anatomy of seedlings was *** diaspores showed acrescent calyx surrounding the fruit,composed by 4 rough tuberculate *** indehiscent mericarpid encloses an exalbuminous seed with a thin coat and a spatulate embryo with folded *** uptake took place through the vascular trace“protuberance”in the cicatrix of the mericarpid,which triggers the germination *** was epigeal,the cotyledons were photosynthetically active at the emergence,and a rudimentary developed gemmula was *** percentage was 66.5%.The macrosclereids of the pericarp functions as an obstacle to water uptake,which is overcome when the mericarpid is detached from the gynobase,and the protuberance that acts as a water uptake path is exposed,leading to *** morpho-anatomical characteristics of diaspore,explain the successful dispersal for this aggressive weed,and provide important information in relation to the necessary care for its control.

Clinical relevance of stem cells in lung cancer

Lung cancer is the major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide,it has one of the lowest 5-year survival rate,mainly because it is diagnosed in the late stage of the *** cancer is classified into two groups,small cell lung cancer(SCLC)and non-SCLC(NSCLC).In turn,NSCLC is categorized into three distinct cell subtypes:Adenocarcinoma,squamous cell carcinoma,and large cell *** is the most common lung cancer,accounting for 85%of all lung *** for lung cancer is linked to the cell type and stage of the disease,involving chemotherapy,radiation therapy,and *** improvements in therapeutic treatments,lung cancer patients show high rates of recurrence,metastasis,and resistance to *** stem cells(SCs)are undifferentiated cells capable of self-renewal and proliferation,are resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy and,due to their properties,could be involved in the development and progression of lung *** presence of SCs in the lung tissue could be the reason why lung cancer is difficult to *** identification of lung cancer stem cells biomarkers is of interest for precision medicine using new therapeutic agents directed against these cell *** this review,we present the current knowledge on lung SCs and discuss their functional role in the initiation and progression of lung cancer,as well as their role in tumor resistance to chemotherapy.

A paradox： rapid evolution rates of germline-limited sequences are associated with conserved patterns of rearrangements in cryptic species of Chilodonella uncinata(Protista, Ciliophora)

Some of the most extreme genome wide rearrangements are found in ciliates, which are unique in possessing both germline micronucleus and somatic macronucleus in every cell/organism. A series of DNA rearrangement events, including DNA elimination, chromosomal fragmentation, gene unscrambling and alternative processing, happen during macronuclear development. To assess the molecular evolution of macronuclear and germline-limited sequences in different cryptic species of Chilodonella uncinata, we characterized the actin, α-tubulin and β-tubulin genes in the micronucleus and macronucleus genomes of USA-SC2 strain and compared them with other strains(i.e. cryptic species). Three main results are:(i) rearrangement patterns between germline and soma are conserved for each gene among the cryptic species of C. uncinata;(ii) in contrast, the germlinelimited regions are highly divergent in sequence and length among the cryptic species;(iii) pointer shifting is frequent among the cryptic species. We speculate that pointer sequences may serve as the buffer between the conserved macronuclear destined sequences and rapidly-evolving internal eliminated sequences. The data combined with previous studies demonstrate the plasticity of gene rearrangement among different groups of ciliates and add to the growing data for the role of genome rearrangements in species differentiation.

Environmental factors determining growth of salamander larvae： A field study

Larval growth and survival of organisms are strongly influenced by abiotic and biotic factors, as demonstrated by ex- perimental studies performed under controlled laboratory or semi-natural conditions. Even if they have many advantages, ex- periments cannot cover the full complexity of natural conditions and field studies are needed for a better understanding of how environmental variation determines growth and development rate. Fire salamander Salamandra salamandra females give birth to larvae in a variety of habitats, both epigean and subterranean. In caves, salamander larvae successfully grow and metamorphose, but their growth is more than three times longer than in epigean streams and factors determining these differences require inves- tigation. We performed a field study to understand the factors related to the growth of fire salamander larvae in different envi- ronmental conditions, evaluating the relationship between environmental features and larval growth and differences between caves and epigean spring habitats. Both caves and epigean larvae successfully grew. Capture-mark-recapture allowed to individu- ally track individuals along their whole development, and measure their performance. Growth rate was significantly affected by environmental variables： larvae grew faster in environments with abundant invertebrates and few conspeciflcs. Taking into ac- count the effect of environmental variables, larval growth was significantly lower in caves. Food availability plays a different ef- fect in the two environments. Larval growth was positively related to the availability of invertebrates in epigean sites only. The development rate of hypogeous populations of salamanders is slower because of multiple parameters, but biotic factors play a much stronger role than the abiotic ones

A self-powered skin patch for the measurement of sweat conductivity is *** key component of the patch consists of a paper battery that is activated upon absorption of *** body fluid acts as the battery electrolyte,the conductivity of which has a direct impact on the battery-generated output power and *** particular behaviour enables the operation of a very simple and robust conductivity sensor in direct current mode without needing an external power *** device presented in this paper takes advantage of this new measurement method to develop a sweat patch for screening cystic fibrosis that operates with an extremely simple electronic circuit that minimizes its cost and environmental *** patch provides an unambiguous digital result that can be read in an electrochromic display and yields 95%sensitivity and 100%specificity when tested with artificial eccrine perspiration samples.
