Metal-free two-dimensional phosphorene-based electrocatalyst with covalent P-N heterointerfacial reconstruction for electrolyte-lean lithium-sulfur batteries

The use of lithium-sulfur batteries under high sulfur loading and low electrolyte concentrations is severely restricted by the detrimental shuttling behavior of polysulfides and the sluggish kinetics in redox ***-dimensional(2D)few layered black phosphorus with fully exposed atoms and high sulfur affinity can be potential lithium-sulfur battery electrocatalysts,which,however,have limitations of restricted catalytic activity and poor electrochemical/chemical *** resolve these issues,we developed a multifunctional metal-free catalyst by covalently bonding few layered black phosphorus nanosheets with nitrogen-doped carbon-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes(denoted c-FBP-NC).The experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations show that the formed polarized P-N covalent bonds in c-FBP-NC can efficiently regulate electron transfer from NC to FBP and significantly promote the capture and catalysis of lithium polysulfides,thus alleviating the shuttle ***,the robust 1D-2D interwoven structure with large surface area and high porosity allows strong physical confinement and fast mass ***,with c-FBP-NC as the sulfur host,the battery shows a high areal capacity of 7.69 mAh cm^(−2) under high sulfur loading of 8.74 mg cm^(−2) and a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 5.7μL mg^(−1).Moreover,the assembled pouch cell with sulfur loading of 4 mg cm^(−2) and an electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 3.5μL mg^(−1) shows good rate capability and outstanding *** work proposes an interfacial and electronic structure engineering strategy for fast and durable sulfur electrochemistry,demonstrating great potential in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Decoupling the adsorption mechanisms of arsenate at molecular level on modified cube-shaped sponge loaded superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

In this study, a commercial cube-shaped open-celled cellulose sponge adsorbent was modified by in-situ co-precipitation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles(SPION) and used to remove As(V) from aqueous solutions. Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS) and TEM identified maghemite as the main iron phase of the SPION nanoparticles with an average size 13 nm. Batch adsorption experiments at 800 mg/L showed a 63% increase of adsorption capacity when loading 2.6 wt.% mass fraction of SPION in the *** determination of the adsorption thermodynamic parameters indicated that the As(V) adsorption on the composite material is a spontaneous and exothermic *** K-edge XAS results confirmed that the adsorption enhancement on the composite can be attributed to the nanoparticles loaded. In addition, adsorbed As(V) did not get reduced to more toxic As(Ⅲ) and formed a binuclear corner-sharing complex with SPION. The advantageous cube-shape of the sponge-loaded SPION composite together with its high affinity and good adsorption capacity for As(V), good regeneration capability and the enhanceddiffusion attributed to its open-celled structure make this adsorbent a good candidate for industrial applications.

Validation of a Statistical Forecast Model for Zonda Wind in West Argentina Based on the Vertical Atmospheric Structure

Zonda is a strong, warm, very dry wind associated with adiabatic compression upon descending the eastern slopes of the Andes Cordillera in western-central Argentina. This research seeks, first, to validate the skill of a statistical forecast of zonda based on the behavior of the vertical structure of the atmosphere and, second, to describe the climatology of the vertical profile leeward of the Andes. The forecast was built for May-August 1974/1983, and was verified against a series of cases recorded in the Mendoza Aero and San Juan Aero weather stations for May-August 2005/2014. It made use of the Stepwise Discriminant Analysis (SDA) and rawinsonde data from Mendoza Aero as predictors, with the following input variables: surface pressure, temperature, dew point, and the zonal and meridional components of the wind on surface and of the fixed levels up to 200 hPa. The variables selected as predictors by the SDA were: surface pressure, dew point depression at 850 hPa, meridional wind component at 850 hPa, and zonal wind component at 400 hPa. Climatology of the vertical profile of the atmosphere leeward of the Andes was built from daily rawinsonde data from Mendoza Aero for May-August 1974/1983. Zonda markedly influences the atmospheric structure leeward of the Andes in western-central Argentina. Its maximum impact occurs at 850 to 800 hPa, with significant heating and decrease of humidity. Validation of the prediction program considered deterministic and probabilistic forecasts. Contingency tables show that probability of zonda occurrence in the plains is generally overestimated, and false alarm cases are far more frequent than surprise events. The main contribution of this paper is precisely the validation of the prediction model, which ensures forecasters one more tool to improve zonda forecasting;this, in turn, will aid decision-makers when taking steps to ameliorate zonda wind impact.

Hand-Sewn Running Barbed Suture versus Endoscopic Stapler Closure of the Mesenteric Defects in Retrocolic and Retrogastric RYGB: A Comparative Case-Matched Study

Background: Obesity is nowadays a major health concern in Western countries and the number of bariatric surgical procedures being performed worldwide is vertiginously rising. The Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) has become the gold standard bariatric procedure. The retrocolic retrogastric approach is closer to normal anatomy and it is associated to a lower rate of anastomotic leak, a lower rate of gastrojejunal stricture and a lower rate of marginal ulcers;therefore the problem of small bowel obstruction due to internal hernia (IH) has to be faced. The meticulous closure of all possible mesenteric defects with running, non-absorbable sutures may reduce the rate of this complication, but it can be challenging for the surgeon and it rises the operating time (OT). This study has conducted in a context of optimization of our “Fast Track-type” recovery protocol and it aims to compare the rate of early IH and the OT difference when mesenteric defects are closed using running non-absorbable barbed suture or an endoscopic stapler. Materials and Methods: From December 2014 to February 2015 a single-surgeon consecutive series of 22 patients undergoing retrocolic restrogastric LRYBP in our high volume obesity centre has been retrospectively extrapolated from our prospective longitudinal database. We recorded the overall OT and relative rate of IH in patients who received a 15-cm non-absorbable V-LocTM1 (group A, 11 patients) or EndopathTM EMS, endoscopic multifeed stapler2 (group B, 11 patients) defect. Results: The mean OT was 77.36 minutes in the group A and 60.90 minutes in the group B (P value 0.066). 0 patients (0%) in the group A versus 4 patients (36.3%) in the group B developed IH within 30 days (two-tailed P value at chi-square test: 0.02).
