Self-Care Activities among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes in Morocco: Prevalence and Determinants

Background: Self-care is an important, though often neglected, area of type 2 diabetes management in lower and middle income countries (LMICs). In Morocco, whilst the evolution of the disease is increasing rapidly, evidence documenting disease self-care patterns remains scarce. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of self-care activities among patients with type 2 diabetes in Morocco, and to identify the factors associated with good self-care practices. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of data of 406 patients aged 30 years old and over, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus for at least 6 months. Self-care activities were assessed using the Moroccan version of the Summary of diabetes self-care activities. Studied factors included socio-demographics, disease features and healthcare use. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios were calculated using logistic regression. Results: Mean age was 55.8 ± 11.6 years old. Females represented 68.7% of the respondents. Mean estimates of the frequency of self-care practices exceeded 3.5 days per week for diet, exercise and foot-care;of these, good dietary behavior was the most prevalent (63.6%). In multivariate analysis, females displayed better dietary behavior (OR = 1.81 [1.27 - 2.58]), and less frequent foot care (OR = 1.81 [1.27 - 2.58]) than males. Lower levels of exercise were associated with being female (0.42 [0.26 - 0.68]), and belonging to the higher income category (0.55 [0.34 - 0.88]). Residents in rural areas also reported better exercise practices (1.72 [1.07 - 2.78]). Conclusion: This study draws attention to self-care practices and their determinants in the Moroccan context. Such findings should help in the design, implementation, and evaluation of self-management interventions for people with type 2 diabetes.

The cattlemen of the steppe are faced with climate risks whose consequences are at the origin of one of the essential mechanisms of the degradation of resources natural fodder, thus making uncertain the food of livestock. Thus, faces to the changing socio-economic and climatic risks, the pastoral society has implemented different adaptive strategies to ensure the reproduction of its operating systems. The objective of this study is to analyze the patterns of the use of the space of the pastoral area called El-Bayadh in order to show how the actors adopt and adapt the techniques of production available in order to ensure the security of the production of their exploitation in an environment particularly fragile, hostile and vulnerable. It is therefore to take knowledge of the basic strategies implementation and the responses provided by the livestock producers to protect themselves against the consequences of a difficult climate in order to ensure the conduct of the food needs of their animals and the reproduction of their operating system.

In this paper, we propose a software component under Windows that generates pseudo random numbers using RDS （Refined Descriptive Sampling） as required by the simulation. RDS is regarded as the best sampling method as shown in the literature. In order to validate the proposed component, its implementation is proposed on approximating integrals. The simulation results from RDS using ＂RDSRnd＂ generator were compared to those obtained using the generator ＂Rnd＂ included in the Pascal programming language under Windows. The best results are given by the proposed software component.

Since 1930, the analysis of slope stability is done according to the limit equilibrium approach. Several methods were developed of which certain remain applicable because of their simplicity. However, major disadvantages of these methods are (1) they do not take into account the soil behavior and (2) the complex cases cannot be studied with precision. The use of the finite elements in calculations of stability has to overcome the weakness of the traditional methods. An analysis of stability was applied to a slope, of complex geometry, composed of alternating sandstone and marls using finite elements and limit equilibrium methods. The calculation of the safety factors did not note any significant difference between the two approaches. Various calculations carried out illustrate perfectly benefits that can be gained from modeling the behavior by the finite elements method. In the finite elements analysis, the shape of deformations localization in the slope is nearly circular and confirms the shape of the failure line which constitutes the basic assumption of the analytical methods. The integration of the constitutive laws of soils and the use of field’s results tests in finite elements models predict the failure mode, to better approach the real behavior of slope soil formations and to optimize its reinforcement.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has undergone major urban transformation after the establishment of the country in 1971. One noticeable change is urban expansion in terms of massive infrastructure, including new residential areas, highways, airports, and sophisticated transportation systems. Major landscape changes and disturbances, such as urban development, are among the major contributors to global climate change. Urban areas can be 3.5°C - 4.5°C warmer than neighboring rural areas, a phenomenon known as urban heat islands (UHIs). As such, urban development in the UAE was expected to follow a similar pattern and to be a major contributor to the country’s impact on global climate change. Analyses of multi-temporal (1988-2017) land surface temperature (LST) data obtained from Landsat satellite datasets over a desert city in the UAE showed unexpected results. Urbanization of desert surfaces in the study area led to a decrease of 3°C - 5°C in the overall LST. This was attributed to the associated expansion of green spaces in the newly developed urban areas, the expansion of date plantations and perhaps a cooling in the previously desert surface. Therefore, the UHI effect was not well demonstrated in the studied desert surfaces converted to urban areas.

Geophysics Contribution for the Determination of Aquifers with a Case Study

The determination and monitoring of aquifer formations on the eastern border of Moroccan Gharb basin are very difficult because of their spatial and temporal variation. To delimit these formations, a geophysical survey of 52 geoelectric soundings was performed with a mesh of 500 m and electrodes distance between 1000 m and 3000 m. Geoelectric sections and resistivity maps show a horst and graben structure. The correlation of existing oil drillings shows that the Jurassic and Neogene formations are both affected by normal faults causing Jurassic deposits collapse with local thickening of the Miocene deposits, and reverse faults delimiting tectonic slices due to tension caused by prerifaine nappe advance. This fact confirms the generated structure by the resistivity method. The isobath map of resistant formations's roof show average depths extending from 400 to 800 m for calcareous sandstone that are potential aquifers while oil drillings indicate over 1000 m depths.

Origanum elongatum (Bonnet) Emb. & Maire, is a medicinal, aromatic and endemic plant of Morocco, characterized by its pharmacological effects, and is commonly used for the production of essential oils and aromas, resulting in high harvest and overexploitation pressure. This is why the present study aims to implement the in vitro micropropagation of Origanum elongatum for optimal vitroplant production. Six macroelements were tested (SH, SD, N30K, MS, MSm and B5) and the SD medium was selected for vegetative propagation of the explants. Seven cytokinins: adenine (Ad), N6-(2-Isopentenyl) adenine, zeatin (Zeat), kinetin (Kin), benzyladenine (BAP), 1,3-diphenylurea (DPU) and thidiazuron (TDZ) were then evaluated at five concentrations (0.44, 1.33, 2.22, 3.11 and 4.44 μM/L) on growth, development, budding, rooting and hyperhydricity. 0.44 μM Kin was selected and combined with three auxins: indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), indole-3-butyric acid (AIB), and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at four concentrations (1.14, 2.85, 4.56 and 6.27 μM/L) to improve rooting and association with 1.14 μM IAA was shown to be efficient for roots development. Different concentrations of gibberellic acid (0.29, 1.5, 2.60 and 2.89 μM/L), combined with 0.44 μM/L Kin and 1.14 μM/L IAA, were tested and 2.60 μM/L GA3 gave maximum buds and shoots. Then, the combination of three polyamines at five concentrations (1.134, 3.402, 5.67, 7.938 and 11.34 μM/L) with 0.44 μM Kin and 1.14 μM/L IAA showed an increase in the number of buds and shoots for 7.938 μM/L putrescine and 3.402 μM/L spermine. Finally, seedlings with good foliar and root development were acclimatized.

Cystic duct cysts are rare lesions, and type VI of TODANI’s modified classification is the rarest subtype with only sporadic case reports in the literature. The following report describes the coexistence of this entity and type 1 tyrosinemia in a one month-old infant referred to our department for etiological investigations of prolonged neonatal cholestasis. To the best of our knowledge, we report herein the first case in the literature describing this association. Cystic duct abnormalities should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neonatal cholestases, however further investigations should be performed to exclude associated life-threatening conditions such as metabolic disorders including tyrosinemia.
