background and study aims: Many lesions found during push enteroscopy to evaluate obscure gastrointestinal bleeding are within the reach of standard endoscopes. The aim of this study was to determine whether the rate of proximal lesions varies in relation to the type of obscure bleeding that is present. Patients and methods: A retrospective review of consecutive push enteroscopies carried out for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding between July 1996 and July 2000 was conducted. The patients were categorized into three groups: those with recurrent obscure/overt gastrointestinal bleeding; those with persistent obscure/overt gastrointestinal bleeding; and those with obscure/ occult gastrointestinal bleeding. Results: A total of 63 patients (24 men, 39 women; mean age 69.8) were included. Push enteroscopy examinations were conducted for recurrent obscure/overt bleeding in 32 patients; for persistent obscure/overt bleeding in 12 patients; and for obscure/occult bleeding in 19 patients. The overall diagnostic yield of push enteroscopy was 47% (15 of 32) in the group with recurrent obscure/overt bleeding; 66% (eight of 12) in the group with persistent obscure/overt bleeding; and 63% (12 of 19) in the group with obscure/occult bleeding. However, when lesions within the reach of standard esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)were excluded, the yield of push enteroscopy was slightly higher in the group with recurrent obscure/overt bleeding (41% ) than in the groups with persistent obscure/overt bleeding (33% ) and obscure/ occult bleeding (26% ). There were fewer lesions within the reach of EGD in the group with recurrent obscure/overt bleeding than in the groups with persistent obscure/overt bleeding (6% vs. 33% ; P bscure/occult bleeding (6% vs. 37% ; P bscure/overt bleeding were significantly less likely to have lesions within the reach of EGD than patients with persistent obscure/overt bleeding

AIM： To determine the incidence and the prevalence of hepatitis b and C viral infections in patients on hemodialysis （HD） across ***： We reviewed the data registry at the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health where records of monthly hepatitis b surface antigen （HbsAg） and hepatitis C virus （HCV） serology are reported from 60 affiliated HD centers across Lebanon. All patients who were on HD or who started HD between October 2010 and July 2012 were included in the study. Patients from seven HD centers were excluded due to inadequate and incomplete results reporting. During the selected period, HbsAg and HCV serology were available for 3769 patients from 53 HD centers distributed at all Lebanese governorates. The prevalence was calculated by dividing the number of patients with positive HbsAg or HCV serology to the total number of patients. The Incidence was calculated by dividing the number of newly acquired infection to number of patients-years （p-y）. Incidence rates at different governorates were compared to each other using two tailed Z test and a P value of 〈 0.05 was considered ***： Sixty out of 3769 HD patients were found to have positive HbS Ag and 177 out of 3769 were positive for HCV Antibodies. The prevalence of hepatitis b virus （HbV） and HCV in HD patients across Lebanon was 1.6%, and 4.7%, respectively. The comparison of prevalence according to geographic distribution could not be done accurately due to the frequent shift of patients between dialysis centers at different governorates. The incidence rate was 0.27 per 100 p-y for HbV and 0.37 per 100 p-y for HCV. There was no signifcant difference concerning the incidence of HbV between HD centers at different governorates （all P values 〉 0.1）, but this difference was highly significant concerning the incidence rates of HCV which occurred predominantly in the southern centers （1.47 per 100 p-y） with a P value of 0.00068 and 0.00374 when compared to Mount Lebanon （0.21 per 100 p-y

Proline has been proposed to be an osmoprotector and scavenger of reactive oxygen species in plants subjected to water deficit. The aim of this work was to study the effects of drought on each wheat phenological stage （tillering, booting, heading, flowering and grain-filling） using stress parameters such as the relative water content （RWC）, membrane stability index （MSI）, lipid peroxidation through malondialdehyde levels （MDA） and determination of proline content （PRO）. The brazilian commercial elite cultivar Triticum aestivum cv. CD 200126 was submitted to eight days of water deficit stress at each stage. The perception of stress was low at tillering and high at the final stages of growth, as verified by the reduction in the MSI and RWC. However, an increase in the MDA was clearly observed. We observed a high proline accumulation when stress was applied, although it was not sufficient to prevent damages. These results indicate that the relevant stages to evaluate the effect of water shortage during wheat plant development are booting, heading and flowering.

Traffic microsimulation is an essential tool in urban transportation and road planning. Its calibration is essential to attain representative results validated with real-world conditions. VISSIM (Verkehr in Städten—SIMulationsmodell) operates with the Wiedemann’s psycho-physical car-following model for freeway travel that considers safety distances (standstill and movement) during simulation. Calibration in this paper was achieved by using two different approaches: a) manual and b) genetic algorithm (with the GEH statistic formula) calibration techniques. Calibration and validation of this model were performed at the Periferico de la Juventud expressway in Chihuahua City, in northern Mexico. The Periferico de la Juventud (PDJ) has a N-S orientation and a length of ca. 20 km, with its northern section being its most congested portion. Its highest vehicle volume occurs at noon, with 3700 vehicles per hour, with 95% being passenger cars and the other 5% heavy goods vehicles. PDJ’s speed limit is 70 km·h-1, but the driver’s behavior has a tendency towards the aggressive performance. A total of 82 standstill and 82 look-ahead distances were obtained from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) images, with values ranging from 0.8 to 4.7 m and from 0.2 to 28 m, respectively. VISSIM calibrated parameter values were calculated for this expressway, being slightly above than the VISSIM default ones;and was validated with travel times and look-ahead distances. Results contribute information for the city’s future installment of public transportation systems, and should help decision makers deal with future urban planning.

Alumina nanoparticles were dispersed in poly(amide 12-b-tetramethylene oxide) copolymer through extrusion. The alumina particles were functionalized with 3-(2 trimethoxysilylethyl) cyclohexene oxide. The following PEbAX TM/ Al2O 3 proportions were prepared: 0.1, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0% w/w. The thermal stabiity of the nanocomposites was evalu- ated by thermograviemtric analysis under N2 and was comparable to the neat PEbAXTM polymer. The thermo-oxidative degradation of the polymeric matrix by oxygen was strongly hindered by the functionalized alumina. The rule of mixture would predict that the thermal degradation should be strongly dominated by PEbAXTM matrix. Therefore, the physical mixture of PEbAXTM and silanized alumina should be almost as stable as pure PEbAXTM. However, the experimental results suggest that the nanocomposites are more stable than the mixture of their components. This stabilization effect is evident in the temperature range between 300?C and 400?C, in which the degradation of the PA12 block takes place.

·AIM: To anatomically locate the points of minimum corneal thickness and central corneal thickness(pupil center) in relation to the corneal apex.·METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional study, 299 healthy volunteers. Thickness at the corneal apex(AT),minimum corneal thickness(MT) and corneal thickness at the pupil center(PT) were determined using the pentacam. Distances from the corneal apex to MT(MD)and PT(PD) were calculated and their quadrant position(taking the corneal apex as the reference) determined:point of minimum thickness(MC) and point of central thickness(PC) depending on the quadrant position. Two multivariate linear regression models were constructed to examine the influence of age, gender, power of the flattest and steepest corneal axes, position of the flattest axis, corneal volume(determined using the Pentacam)and PT on MD and PD. The effects of these variables on MC and PC were also determined in two multinomial regression models.·RESULTS: MT was located at a mean distance of 0.909 mm from the apex(79.4% in the inferior-temporal quadrant). PT was located at a mean distance of 0.156 mm from the apex. The linear regression model for MD indicated it was significantly influenced by corneal volume(b =-0.024; 95% CI:-0.043 to-0.004). No significant relations were identified in the linear regression model for PD or the multinomial logisticregressions for MC and PC.·CONCLUSION: MT was typically located at the inferiortemporal quadrant of the cornea and its distance to the corneal apex tended to decrease with the increment of corneal volume.

Evidence of Synergistic Activity of Medicinal Plant Extracts against Neuraminidase Inhibitor Resistant Strains of Influenza Viruses

The frequent emergence of drug resistant influenza viral strains emphasizes the urgent and continual need to develop new antiviral drugs. Given the encouraging findings of previous studies on antiviral compounds from plant sources, this study focused on medicinal plants from borneo that were traditionally used to treat symptoms of influenza infection. Following the promising results of earlier investigations, four plant extracts that demonstrated multiple modes of viral inhibition were studied against wild-type and neuraminidase (NA) inhibitor-resistant strains of Types A and b influenza viruses. The extracts exhibited more pronounced activities against the wild-type viruses than the NA inhibitor-resistant strains. Variations in the antiviral potential of the extracts collected from different parts of the same plant were also evidenced in the in vitro micro-inhibition assays. Even though all plant extracts affected NA activity of all viruses, only two extracts demonstrated hemagglutination inhibitory (HI) activities against Type A pandemic H1N1 and Type b viruses. Furthermore, Receptor Destroying Enzyme (RDE) treatments of extracts exhibiting HI activities indicated the presence of sialic acid (SA)-like component(s) that may be responsible for HI activity. Since the antiviral potential of extracts was not completely suppressed by RDE, the possibility of non SA-like antiviral components cannot be ruled out. Therefore, synergistic activity between SA-like and non SA-like components contained in the plant extracts may be responsible for the demonstrated antiviral potential. The results also indicated the presence of non SA-like components that may act against other viral proteins apart from hemagglutinin (HA) and NA. Hence, this study supports the presence of multiple antiviral components that act against different viral proteins or interfere with different stages of viral replication. Analysis of agricultural production systems of hydroponic tomato in Morelos state of Mexico, through a systematic approach, called systems development of life cycle （SDLC） was performed by comparing this with the methodology known as life cycle assessment （LCA）. This permits to analyze the differences in approaches of all these methodologies to propose improvements in the current system, which can allow an improved assessment of the environmental quality of agricultural products, which often is subject to confusion. That due to measurement parameters are not generally accepted by society, producers and consumers, may ensure that the process is fully sustainable and is considered quite as a green technology processes towards an ecological benefit and therefore for the humanity.
