Rotational stability of plate haptic toric intraocular lenses after combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and cataract surgery

AIM:To evaluate the postoperative intraocular lens(IOL)rotational stability and residual refractive astigmatism following combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and cataract surgery with implantation of a plate haptic toric ***:In this retrospective case series,32 eyes of 32 patients underwent a combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and phacoemulsification for vitreoretinal diseases and cataract with regular corneal astigmatism of at least 1 diopter(D).A plate haptic toric IOL(AT Torbi 709M,Carl Zeiss Meditec AG)was implanted in all *** outcome measures were rotational stability and refractive astigmatism up to 6mo postoperatively as well as the best corrected visual acuity(BCVA).RESULTS:Preoperative refractive astigmatism was 2.14±1.17 D,which was significantly reduced to 0.77±0.37 D six to eight weeks postoperatively and remained stable throughout the observation period(0.67±0.44 D at three months and 0.75±0.25 D at six months;for all groups:P<0.0001 compared to baseline).BCVA improved significantly from 0.36±0.33 logMAR preoperatively to 0.10±0.15 logMAR following surgery(P=0.02).Mean IOL axis deviation from the target axis was 3.4°±2.9°after six to eight weeks and significantly decreased over time(2.4°±2.6°six months after surgery;P=0.04).In one patient IOL,re-alignment was ***:Corneal astigmatism is significantly reduced following combined 25-gauge vitrectomy and cataract *** plate haptic toric IOL position and axis remain stable during the observation period of six months.

Analysis of Cartilage Creep Recovery Using a Highly Dynamic Closed-loop Test System

The aim of this study was to analyze cartilage creep and creep recovery after static and cyclic loading. Up to now technical limitations have hindered the measurement of creep recovery. For this reason, we developed a closed loop micro creep and creep-recovery indentation test system with active force control. Bovine osteochondral explants were tested under static （110 kPa） and cyclic （100 cycles, 350 kPa/35 kPa, 1 Hz） loading conditions and subsequently creep recovery was measured. The cartilage thickness was determined using needle indentation. For static loading, the creep and creep-recovery rates were significantly different during the first 60 seconds （p 〈 0.05）. Cyclic loading was assessed for the medial and lateral patella and resulted in a physiological patellar cartilage strain of 7.7% ± 2.6% and 8.2% ± 2.7%, respectively. We recorded a creep recovery of 97.8% ±2.1% for the medial and 98.3% ± 2.4% for the lateral patella. The advantage of this study over earlier in vitro studies is that we recorded creep-recovery profiles with an actively controlled setup. This allowed us to analyze creep recovery immediately after removing the creep load, in contrast to MRI-based in vivo studies. In future, the presented method will enable us to quantify spatial variations within articular joints.

Near-Earth object(NEO)impact is one of the examples of high impact and low probability(HILP)event,same as the Covid-19 pandemic the world faces since the beginning of *** 7 th Planetary Defense Conference held by the International Academy of Astronautics(IAA)in April 2021 included an exercise on a hypothetical NEO impact event,allowing the planetary defense community to discuss potential *** the span of the 4-day conference this exercise connected disaster response and management professionals to participate in a series of panels,providing feedback and perspective on the unfolding crisis *** hypothetical but realistic asteroid threat scenario illustrated how such a short-warning threat might *** scenario utilized during the conference indicates a need to prepare now for what might come in the future,because even with advance notice,preparation time might be *** scenario chose Europe for the impact,which may likely cope with such a disaster,through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism(UCPM)and other solidarity and support mechanisms within the European Union(EU),as well as with potential support from international *** short article raises concern about other areas in the world on how they may access NEO impact information and cope with such *** also provides an idea on vast scale of such disaster vis-a-vis the current capacity of response systems to cope with a larger event in Europe or *** scenario showed that planetary defense is a global *** engagement of the planetary defense and disaster response communities is essential in order to keep the world safe from potential disasters caused by NEO impacts.

Diversity,endemism and conservation of the freshwater crabs of China(Brachyura:Potamidae and Gecarcinucidae)

China lies at the heart of the global center of freshwater crab diversity in tropical Asia,where the 2 most diverse families occur:Potamidae(505 species,95 genera)and Gecarcinucidae(344 species,59 genera).China stands out as the country with the highest species richness of freshwater crabs *** fauna comprises 243 species in 37 genera and in 2 families,and species discovery is still progressing at a rapid *** vast majority of the species are distributed in southwest,south central and eastern China in the Oriental zoogeographical *** also stands out as having a highly endemic freshwater crab fauna at the species level(96%)and at the genus level(78%).Although the recent International Union for the Conservation of Nature(IUCN)red list conservation assessment found only 6 out of 228 species(2%)to be threatened(5 potamids and 1 gecarcinucid),the majority(more than 75%)of Chinese species are regarded as data deficient,so the number of threatened species is likely to be a serious *** from increasing habitat destruction and pollution are a major concern due to the rapidly growing economy and massive developments taking place in *** is therefore an urgent need for increased species exploration and for the development of a conservation strategy for China’s threatened(and potentially threatened)endemic freshwater crab species.

Detection and Separation of Inorganic Cations in Natural, Potable, and Wastewater Samples Using Capillary Zone Electrophoresis with Indirect UV Detection

Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) is a sensitive and rapid technique for determining traces of inorganic cations in water samples. CZE with indirect UV-diode array detection (CZE-DAD) was utilized to identify several inorganic cations in natural, potable, and wastewater samples. A pH 4.35 background electrolyte system was employed and consisted of 15 mM imidazole, 8 mM malonic acid, 2 mM 18-crown-6 ether as complexing agents, 10% v/v methanol as an organic modifier with indirect absorbance reference at 214 nm. The CZE method involved electromigration injection at 5 kV for 5 s, a separation voltage of 20 kV at 25℃, and a detection wavelength of 280 nm. Six main cations (ammonium , potassium K+, calcium Ca2+, sodium Na+, magnesium Mg2+, and lead Pb2+) were tested, and all but lead, were detected in the water samples at concentrations between 0.03 and 755 ppm with a detection limit ranging between 0.023 and 0.084 ppm. The successful evaluation of the proposed methodology allowed us to reliably detect and separate six metal ions in different water samples without any pretreatment. All water samples were collected from Northern New York towns and the Raquette River water system, the third longest river in New York State and the largest watershed of the central and western Adirondacks.

Maize seed coatings and seedling sprayings with chitosan and hydrogen peroxide:their influence on some phenological and biochemical behaviors

Objective： To evaluate the effect of chitosan （CH） and hydrogen peroxide （H2O） seed coatings and seedling sprinklings on two different maize varieties by measuring their phenology, the H202 presence, the catalase （CAT） activity, and the protein quantity. Methods： Seven groups of ten seeds for each maize variety were treated with CH （2% （20 g/L） and 0.2% （2 g/L）） or H2O2 （8 mmol/L） by coating, sprinkling, or both. Germination and seedling growth were measured. One month after germination, the presence of H202 in seedlings in the coated seed treatments was evaluated. Protein content and CAT activity were determined under all treatments. Results： H2O2 seed coating en- hanced the germination rate and increased seedling and stem length in the quality protein maize （QPM） variety. Seedlings had a higher emergence velocity under this treatment in both varieties. CH and H2O2 sprinklings did not have an effect on seedling phenology. Exogenous application of H2O2 promoted an increase of endogenousH2O2. OH and H2O2seedling sprinkling increased the protein content in both maize varieties, while there was no significant effect on the CAT activity of treated seeds and seedlings. Conclusions： CH and H2O2 enhance some phenological and biochemical features of maize depending on their method of application.

A Curriculum Development Approach to Integrating Various Kinesiology Sub-disciplines

Drawing on the contextual history of the Douglas College Sport Science Department （British Columbia, Canada） combinedwith the shifting landscape of physical education/kinesiology, this article traces the development of an integrated movement analysiscourse. Specifically, the developed curriculum is detailed and reflection given on the pragmatic, inquiry-based approach used todevelop a course curriculum intended to integrate various kinesiology sub-disciplines. The article explores the combined use of severalframeworks to promote meta-cognition and peer-collaboration as students meet the learning outcomes of creating their ownevidence-based, intradisciplinary process to analyze movement.

Use of recombinant microRNAs as antimetabolites to inhibit human non-small cell lung cancer

During the development of therapeutic microRNAs(miRNAs or miRs),it is essential to define their pharmacological ***,miRNA research and therapy mainly use miRNA mimics synthesized in *** experimental screening of unique recombinant miRNAs produced in vivo,three lead antiproliferative miRNAs against human NSCLC cells,miR-22-3p,miR-9-5p,and miR-218-5p,were revealed to target folate metabolism by bioinformatic *** miR-22-3p,miR-9-5p,and miR-218-5p were shown to regulate key folate metabolic enzymes to inhibit folate metabolism and subsequently alter amino acid metabolome in NSCLC A549 and H1975 *** tracing studies further confirmed the disruption of one-carbon transfer from serine to folate metabolites by all three miRNAs,inhibition of glucose uptake by miR-22-3p,and reduction of serine biosynthesis from glucose by miR-9-5p and-218-5p in NSCLC *** greater activities to interrupt NSCLC cell respiration,glycolysis,and colony formation than miR-9-5p and-218-5p,recombinant miR-22-3p was effective to reduce tumor growth in two NSCLC patient-derived xenograft mouse models without causing any *** results establish a common antifolate mechanism and differential actions on glucose uptake and metabolism for three lead anticancer miRNAs as well as antitumor efficacy for miR-22-3p nanomedicine,which shall provide insight into developing antimetabolite RNA therapies.
