Nitrate regulates rhizobial and mycorrhizal symbiosis in common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Nitrogen-limited conditions are considered to be a prerequisite for legume-rhizobial symbiosis, but the effects of nitrate-rich conditions on symbiotic status remain poorly understood. We addressed this issue by examining rhizobial （Rhizobim tropici） and arbusclar mycorrhizal （Glomus intraradices） symbiosis in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Negro Jamapa under nitrate pre-incubation and continuous nitrate conditions. Our results indicate that nitrate pre-incubation, independent of the concentration, did not affect nodule development. However, the continuous supply of nitrate at high concentrations impaired nodule maturation and nodule numbers. Low nitrate conditions, in addition to positively regulating nodule number, biomass, and nitrogenase activity, also extended the span of nitrogen-fixing activity. By contrast, for arbuscular mycorrhizae, continuous 1o and 50mmol/L nitrate increased the percent root length colonization, concomitantly reduced arbuscule size, and enhanced ammonia transport without affecting phosphate transport. Therefore, in this manuscript, we have proposed the importance of nitrate as a positive regulator in promoting both rhizobial and mycorrhizal symbiosis in the common bean.

Traits of an invasive grass conferring an early growth advantage over native grasses

Aims Invasive species often have higher relative growth rates(RGR)than their native *** use efficiency,total leaf area and specific leaf area(SLA)are traits that may confer RGR differences between natives and invasives,but trait differences are less prominent when the invasive species belongs to the same plant functional type as the dominant native ***,we test if traits displayed soon after germination confer an early size ***,we predicted that invasive species seedlings grow faster than the natives because they lack trade-offs that more strongly constrain the growth of native *** We quantified plant morphological and physiological traits and RGR during early seedling growth at high and low nutrient levels in three dominant perennial native C_(4) grasses:Panicum virgatum L.(switchgrass),Schizachyrium scoparium(Michx.)Nash(little bluestem)and Andropogon gerardii Vitman(big bluestem);and a perennial C_(4) exotic invasive grass,Sorghum halepense(L.)Pers.(Johnsongrass).Important Findings After 2 weeks of growth,Johnsongrass seedlings had greater biomass,SLA and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency,but lower leaf N concentrations(%leaf N)and root:shoot ratio than *** growth continued,Johnsongrass more quickly produced larger and thicker leaves than the natives,which dampened the growth advantage past the first 2 to 3 weeks of *** in carbon gain appears to be the best explanation for the early growth advantage of *** natives,growth was constrained by an apparent trade-off between allocation to root biomass,which reduced SLA,and production of leaves with high N content,which increased carbon *** Johnsongrass,root:shoot ratio did not interact with other traits,and%leaf N was decoupled from RGR as a result of a trade-off between the positive indirect association of%leaf N with RGR and the negative direct association of%leaf N with RGR.

Endogenous Hypoxia in Lateral Root Primordia Controls Root Architecture by Antagonizing Auxin Signaling in Arabidopsis

As non-photosynthesizing organs, roots are dependent on diffusion of oxygen from the external environment and, in some in stances, from the shoot for their aerobic metabolism . Establishment of hypoxic niches in the developing tissues of plants has been postulated as a consequence of insufficient diffusion of oxygen to satisfy the demands throughout development. Here, we report that such niches are established at specific stages of lateral root primordia development in Arabidopsis thaliana grown under aerobic conditions. Using gain- and loss-of-function mutants, we show that ERF-Ⅶ transcription factors, which mediate hypoxic responses, control root architecture by acting in cells with a high level of auxin signaling. ERF-Ⅶs repress the expression of the auxin-induced genes LBD16, LBD18, and PUCHI, which are essential for lateral root development, by binding to their promoters. Our results support a model in which the establishment of hypoxic n iches in the developing lateral root primordia con tributes to the shutting down of key auxin-induced genes and regulates the production of lateral roots.

Polarized Defense Against Fungal Pathogens Is Mediated by the Jacalin-Related Lectin Domain of Modular Poaceae-Specific Proteins

Modular proteins are an evolutionary answer to optimize performance of proteins that physically interact with each other for functionality. Using a combination of genetic and biochemical experiments, we charac-terized the rice protein OsJAC1, which consists of a jacalin-related lectin （JRL） domain predicted to bind mannose-containing oligosaccharides, and a dirigent domain which might function in stereoselective coupling of monolignols. Transgenic overexpression of OsJAC1 in rice resulted in quantitative broad- spectrum resistance against different pathogens including bacteria, oomycetes, and fungi. Overexpression of this gene or its wheat ortholog TAJA1 in barley enhanced resistance against the powdery mildew fungus. Both protein domains of OsJAC1 are required to establish resistance as indicated by single or combined transient expression of individual domains. Expression of artificially separated and fluorescence-tagged protein domains showed that the JRL domain is sufficient for targeting the powdery mildew penetration site. Nevertheless, co-localization of the lectin and the dirigent domain occurred. Phylogenetic analyses re- vealed orthologs of OsJAC1 exclusively within the Poaceae plant family. Dicots, by contrast, only contain proteins with either JRL or dirigent domain（s）. Altogether, our results identify OsJAC1 as a representative of a novel type of resistance protein derived from a plant lineage-specific gene fusion event for better function in local pathogen defense.

Response to osimertinib in a colorectal cancer patient with an EGFR T790M mutation: A case report

ABSTRACT： According to the most recent WHO classification of hepatocellular adenomas, a small percentage of inflammatory hepatocellular adenomas presents with mutation in the β-catenin gene and are at higher risk of malignant transformation. It has been recognized that adenoma-like hepatocellular neoplasms with focal atypia, or in unusual clinical context present with similar cytogenetic and immunohistochemistry characteristics to well-differentiated hepatocellular carcino- mas.
