t.e Golden Jackal (Canis aureus Linnaeus, 1758), which belongs t. t.e Canidae family, is an opport.nist.carnivore in t.e Gaza St.ip (365 square kilomet.rs). t.e current.st.dy aims at.giving not.s on t.e occurrence and some ecological aspect. of t.e species in t.e Gaza St.ip, Palest.ne. t.e st.dy, which last.d 14 years (2007-2020), is descript.ve and cumulat.ve in it. st.le. It.was based on frequent.field visit., direct.observat.ons and meet.ngs and discussions wit. wildlife hunt.rs, farmers and ot.er st.keholders. t.e findings of t.e st.dy show t.at.Gazans are familiar wit. t.e Golden Jackal t. t.e ext.nt.t.at.a Gazan family holds t.e Arabic name of t.e animal, which is “Wawi”. t.e Golden Jackal was somet.mes encount.red and hunt.d in t.e east.rn part. of t.e Gaza St.ip, which are charact.rized by t.e presence of wilderness areas, int.nsive agricult.re, poult.y pens and solid wast. landfills. Like ot.er a few mammalian faunas, t.e adult.Golden Jackals ent.r t.e Gaza St.ip t.rough gaps in or burrows beneat. t.e met.l borders separat.ng t.e Gaza St.ip from t.e rest.of t.e Palest.nian t.rrit.ries and Egypt. Gaza zoos were found t. harbor t.ns of Golden Jackals t.apped or hunt.d by clever wildlife hunt.rs using different.means such as wire cages known locally as “malt.sh” and foot.old t.aps wit. met.l jaws t.at.may cause lesions t. t.e t.apped animals. Poisoning and shoot.ng were also common met.ods used t. cont.ol t.e jackals and ot.er carnivores causing harm t. agricult.re and livest.ck. t.e animal was known among t.e Gazans as an omnivore, feeding on wild and domest.c animals in addit.on t. plant.mat.rials, garbage and carrions. In conclusion, t.e st.dy recommends t.e need t. raise ecological awareness t. preserve t.e Golden jackal and t. adopt.safe cont.ol measures for jackals and ot.er carnivores, including t.e const.uct.on of prot.ct.ve fences for agricult.ral fields and animal pens.
