New hy.erbranched poly.ary.eneethy.y.ene）s containing carbazole moieties are sy.thesized in high y.elds （up to 87%） by.poly.y.lotrimerization of 3,6-bis（4-ethy.y.pheny.）-9-octy.carbazole and its copoly.erization with 1-octy.e cataly.ed by.CpCo（CO）2 in THF. The structures and properties of the poly.ers are characterized and evaluated by.IR, NMR, TGA, UV, photoluminescence, and cy.lic voltammetry.analy.es. All the poly.ers are soluble in common organic solvents and show outstanding thermal stability.（≥ 430℃）. They.graphitize in high y.elds （up to 79%） when py.oly.ed at 800℃. Upon photoexcitation, the poly.ers emit a strong deep blue light of ca. 400 nm with quantum y.elds larger than 60%.

The paper examines three selective schemes for the smoothed finite element method （SFEM） which was formulated by.incorporating a cell-wise strain smoothing operation into the standard compatible finite element method （FEM）. These selective SFEM schemes were formulated based on three selective integration FEM schemes with similar properties found between the number of smoothing cells in the SFEM and the number of Gaussian integration points in the FEM. Both scheme 1 and scheme 2 are free of nearly.incompressible locking, but scheme 2 is more general and gives better results than scheme 1. In addition, scheme 2 can be applied to anisotropic and nonlinear situations, while scheme 1 can only.be applied to isotropic and linear situations. Scheme 3 is free of shear locking. This scheme can be applied to plate and shell problems. Results of the numerical study.show that the selective SFEM schemes give more accurate results than the FEM schemes.

An unsupervised learning approach to study.sy.chroneity.of past events in the South China Sea

Unsupervised machine learning methods were applied on multivariate geophy.ical and geochemical datasets of ocean floor sediment cores collected from the South China Sea. The well-preserved and continuous core samples comprising high resolution Cenozoic sediment records enable scientists to carry.out paleoenvironment studies in detail. Bay.sian age-depth chronological models constructed from biostratigraphic control points for the drilling sites are applied on cluster boundaries generated from two popular unsupervised learning methods: K-means and random forest. The unsupervised learning methods experimented have produced compact and unambiguous clusters from the datasets, indicating that previously.unknown data patterns can be revealed when all variables from the datasets are taken into account simultaneously. A study.of sy.chroneity.of past events represented by.the cluster boundaries across geographically.separated ocean drilling sites is achieved through converting the fixed depths of cluster boundaries into chronological ranges represented by.Gaussian density.plots which are then compared with known past events in the region. A Gaussian density.peak at around 7.2 Ma has been identified from results of all three sites and it is suggested to coincide with the initiation of the East Asian monsoon. Contrary.to traditional statistical approach, a priori assumptions are not required for unsupervised learning, and the clustering results serve as a novel data-driven proxy.for study.ng the complex and dy.amic processes of the paleoenvironment surrounding the ocean sediment. This work serves as a pioneering approach to extract valuable information of regional events and opens up a sy.tematic and objective way.to study.the vast global ocean sediment datasets.

A hy.erbranched poly.ary.eneethy.y.ene） containing anthracene chromophore was sy.thesized by.palladiumcataly.ed cross-coupling reaction of 2,4,6-triiodopheny. 9-anthraceny.carboxy.ate with 9,9-bis[4-（2-propy.y.oxy.pheny.]- 9H-fluorene. The structure and properties of the poly.er are characterized and evaluated by.NMR, IR, UV, PL and TGA analy.es. The poly.er is soluble in common organic solvents, possesses high thermal stability.（Td 〉 330℃）, and emits a strong blue light of 465 nm in both solution and solid states.

Poly.pheny.acety.ene）s beating monosaccharide pendant groups are sy.thesized in high y.elds by.[Rh（nbd）Cl]2 cataly.t. The poly.ers have high molecular weights and give satisfactory.spectroscopic data corresponding to their molecular structures. They.are thermally.quite stable （≥ 300℃） and show strong circular dichroism signals in the visible spectral region owing to the helicity.of the poly.ne backbone. The monosaccharide-containing poly.cety.enes are cy.ophilic and can stimulate the growth of living cells.

Climate change, especially.as reflected in heat waves, is a rising threat worldwide. Appropriate use of cooling devices can protect people from health impacts during a heat wave. A population-based telephone survey.was conducted in a representative sample of residents in Hong Kong to investigate ownership and use of domestic cooling devices, identify.correlates, and examine their associations with risk perception of potential health impact of climate change. More than 90% of the 1002 respondents owned and used cooling devices at home. The majority.57.7%) perceived the potential health risk of climate change at a high level. However, risk perception had no relationship with ownership and utilization of cooling devices. Old people(≥ 65 y.ars), the low-educated, those with low income, and those with chronic diseases were more likely.not to use air conditioners when feeling *** findings suggest that there are no signs showing people have taken more protective actions although half of respondents recognized climate change as a threat. Familial economic condition may.be a major determinant in ownership and use of air conditioners at home. Old people and those with chronic diseases are at high risk of adverse exposure to climate change and therefore should be equipped with appropriate measures to use cooling devices.

This paper is focused on calibration of an intelligent network simulation model （INS1M） with reallife transportation network to analy.e the INSIM＇s feasibility.in simulating commuters＇ travel choice behaviour under the influence of real-time integrated multimodal traveller information （IMTI）. A transportation network model for the central and western areas of Singapore was simulated in PARAMICS and integrated with INSIM expert sy.tem by.means of an application programming interface to form the INSIM. Upon calibration, INSIM was able to realistically.present complicated scenarios in which real-time IMTI was provided to commuters and the network performance measures being recorded.

The demand for highly.efficient solid-state luminophores is continuously.growing due to their potential applications in optoelectrical devices, chemosensors, and biological applications. The discovery.of luminogens with aggregation-induced emission(AIE)by.Tang et al. in 2001 provides a good reponse to this demand. Among the exploited AIE luminogens, AIE-active poly.ers possess many.advantages such as simple sy.thesis, convenient structrue modifications, and good processability. which offer an extensive platform for scientists and engineers. Herein, the design principles and latest sy.thetic advancement of AIE-active poly.ers are summarized, including click poly.erization and multicomponent poly.erization. Non-conjugated heteroatom-rich poly.ers were in situ generated and demonstated non-conventional clusteroluminoscence. Advanced applications including fluorescent sensors, stimuli-responsive materials,biological applications, circularly.polarized luminescence, and electroluminescence are then introduced in detail. AIE-active poly.ers display.the signal-amplification effect for sensitive and selective response to chemo/bioanaly.es or stimuli and enhanced photosensitization effect for cancer theranostics. Retrospecting the expansion of this field can further strengthen our belief that AIE-active poly.ers are promising for conceptual innovation and technological breakthroughs in the near future.
