Duodenitis in Systemic.Autoimmune Diseases: Pathologist Perspec.ive

Aims: To study the histomorphology of duodenitis assoc.ated with systemic.autoimmune diseases with c.inic.pathologic.c.rrelation. Patients and Methods: This is a desc.iptive prospec.ive study. Fifteen patients of autoimmune diseases with duodenitis were inc.uded. Informed c.nsent was taken. Histomorphologic.l parameters studied were villous arc.itec.ure, c.ypt arc.itec.ure, intraepithelial lymphoc.te (IEL) c.unt per 100 enteroc.tes, villous tip IEL c.unt per 20 enteroc.tes were c.unted, inflammatory c.lls in lamina propria—lymphoc.tes, neutrophils, eosinophils, epithelioid c.lls. Statistic.l analysis was done using IBM-SPSS software version 21. Results: Fifteen c.ses of duodenitis assoc.ated with autoimmune diseases inc.uded 6 patients of systemic.lupus erythematosus (SLE), 5 of rheumatoid arthritis, one eac. of ankylosing spondylitis, systemic.sc.erosis, dermatomyositis and seronegative reac.ive arthritis. All these c.ses were serologic.lly proven. Only 3 (20%) patients had mild villous blunting. Six patients (46.7%) had inc.eased IEL c.unts. The range of IELs was 8 - 30, mean ± SD was 14 ± 7.6. Range of villous tip IELs was 0 - 8 with mean ± SD of 3.45 ± 2.56. Six patients (46.7%) had inc.eased IEL c.unts but only 3 patients (20%) had inc.eased villous tip IELs. All patients had moderate inc.ease in lymphoplasmac.tic.infiltrate in lamina propria. Eosinophils in lamina propria were inc.eased in 46.7% c.ses.? c.nc.usion: One of the c.uses for malabsorptive c.nditions in adult population in South India is found to be duodenitis assoc.ated with autoimmune c.nditions. We c.nc.ude that a c.mbination of c.inic.l, serologic.l, endosc.pic.and histopathologic.features is c.uc.al in arriving at a c.rrec. diagnosis.

Role of c.talyst on the Formation of Resorc.nol-Furfural Based c.rbon Aerogels and Its Physic.l Properties

c.rbon aerogels (c.G) were synthesized by the pyrolysis of resorc.nol-furfural based organic.aerogels, derived from sol-gel polymerization of resorc.nol and furfural using different c.talysts followed by superc.itic.l drying of as-prepared gels. Different c.talysts viz. hydroc.loric.ac.d (HA), ac.tic.ac.d (Ac.) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) of different c.nc.ntrations were used for this purpose in order to study the role of different c.talysts and the effec. of R/c.ratio (reac.ant to c.talyst molar ratio) on the formation of organic.gel monolith and their physic.l properties were investigated. Aerogels were thoroughly c.arac.erized by using c.N, FTIR, TG-DSc. XRD and SEM. A c.nsiderable reduc.ion of gelation time and the formation of relatively denser organic.gel were observed in the c.se of HMTA, whic. indic.ted the dual role (c.talyst & c.oss-linking agent) of HMTA during the polymerization/polyc.ndensation of resorc.nol and furfural. c.rbon aerogels obtained by using different c.talysts showed BET surfac. area, average pore size, total pore volumes in the range of 438 496 m2/g, 17.9 22.4 ? and 0.20 0.27 c.3/g, respec.ively. The SEM images and results revealed the presenc. of different morphologies of c.rbon aerogels, obtained by using different c.talysts. The HMTA c.talyzed samples were found to have highest surfac. area with partic.es in smaller in size and well interc.nnec.ed 3D c.rbon network.
