pH-indicative Films Based on Chitosan–PVA/Sepiolite and Anthocyanin from Red Cabbage: Application in Milk Packaging

Biobased smart packaging is been the most interesting research field.In this study,pH-sensitive films based on anthocyanin molecules from red cabbage and sepiolite mineral nano-clay as functional additives were studied.The films were fabricated by casting method of blend polymer Chitosan/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)at two fillers loading(5wt.%and 10wt.%).The structural,morphological,thermal,optical,hygroscopic,and mechanical properties as well as the pH sensitivity of films were investigated.The thermal properties confirm that the amount of the anthocyanin in sepiolite was around 6.4%.The tensile strength and the young’s modulus of produced composites at 10wt.%sepiolite–anthocyanin content was increased to 8.90 MPa and 163 MPa,respectively.The maximum water absorption that the films may absorb was 12.3%.pH sensitivity analysis showed that the Smart films change the color by changing the pH level,from pink at pH lower than 6 to yellow at pH higher than 6.Thus,the developed pH-sensitive films show band gaps in visible light that make them useful for monitoring milk spoilage.

Wave Reflection by Rectangular Breakwaters for Coastal Protection

In this study,we focus on the numerical modelling of the interaction between waves and submerged structures in the presence of a uniform flow current.Both the same and opposite senses of wave propagation are considered.The main objective is an understanding of the effect of the current and various geometrical parameters on the reflection coefficient.The wave used in the study is based on potential theory,and the submerged structures consist of two rectangular breakwaters positioned at a fixed distance from each other and attached to the bottom of a wave flume.The numerical modeling approach employed in this work relies on the Boundary element Method(BEM).The results are compared with experimental data to validate the approach.The findings of the study demonstrate that the double rectangular breakwater configuration exhibits superior wave attenuation abilities if compared to a single rectangular breakwater,particularly at low wavenumbers.Furthermore,the study reveals that wave mitigation is more pronounced when the current and wave propagation are coplanar,whereas it is less effective in the case of opposing current.

Physicians’knowledge about radiation protection of patients during prescription of CT scan procedures in Morocco

Objective:To evaluate the knowledge and practices of Moroccan physicians in terms of radioprotection of patients when prescribing computed tomography(CT)procedures.Methods:This is a cross-sectional study in which a questionnaire with 23 multiple-choice questions was sent to prescribers of CT examinations such as radiotherapists(RMs),other medical specialists(OMSs),general practitioners(GPs)and residents/interns(R/Is).The first eight questions asked about the demographics of the participants,while the remaining questions asked about knowledge of ionizing radiation examinations,doses received,relative risks,and patient radiation safety training.Results:A total of 223 physicians participated in this survey.Radiation therapists,considered as the reference group,had a better knowledge of irradiating and non-irradiating imaging compared to the other groups(P=0.003).Thus,67%of the reference group declared to take into account the number of scans performed by the patient during the last year,unlike the other groups(P=0.002).Furthermore,the knowledge of the different groups about the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation was globally low(2%)(P=0.73).Regardless of their specialties and seniority,only 12%of the participants informed the patient at the time of prescription about the risks of X-rays.Finally,only 21%of the participants declared having had training in radiation protection,with no significant differences between the subgroups(P=0.832).Conclusions:The results obtained are similar to those reported in previous studies.They show that Moroccan prescribers have a low level of knowledge of the risks associated with CT examinations.Training on patient radiation protection should be included in the initial curriculum of interns and the continuing professional development of physicians should be reinforced.

Epidemiology of Pemphigus: A Single Center Experience in Morocco

Objective:Pemphigus is a life threatening autoimmune bullous disease which involves the skin and mucous membranes of the stratified squamous epithelium.The global distribution of Pemphigus varies according to genetic,ethnic,socioeconomic,and cultural backgrounds.The purpose of our study is to evaluate the epidemiological features of pemphigus a single center in Morocco and compare our results with those reported elsewhere.Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted of 302 pemphigus patients seen between 1990 and 2020 in the Dermatology Department of Ibn Sina Hospital(Rabat,Morocco).We further collected all the Moroccan scientific researches published by now to compare.Results:The average annual incidence was 0.32/100,000 inhabitants.The incidence doubled to 0.72 in 2020.The most common variant was pemphigus vulgaris(125 cases)followed by pemphigus erythematosus(99 cases),pemphigus foliaceous(40 cases),and vegetans(27 cases).The female to male ratio was 0.75,the average age at onset was 53 years old and the mean duration of the disease before diagnosis was 13.36months.Conclusion:This study joins the main characteristics of pemphigus in the Maghreb and around the world(pemphigus vulgaris most frequent subtype).In 2020,an epidemiological peak occurred during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic;probably related to stress and delayed time consultation for fear of contracting the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

The Effect of the Fin Length on the Solidification Process in a Rectangular Enclosure with Internal Fins

The aim of the proposed work is to study the solidification process within a rectangular enclosure provided with three internal rectangular fins attached to the left vertical wall of the cavity.This latest is filled with a phase change material(PCM),initially liquid,at a temperature above its melting temperature.The solidification process was initiated by cooling the left wall and fins to a temperature lower than the melting temperature.In order to study and examine the thermal behavior and thermal performance of the proposed system,a mathematical model,based on the conservation equations of mass,momentum and energy was developed.The governing equations and their associated boundary and initial conditions were next adimensionalyzed.Therefore,several controlling parameters were appeared.The volume control method was used to discretize the equations.The resulting algebraic equations were solved iteratively.Numerical investigations were carried out to study and examine the effect of the dimensionless fin length on the hydrodynamic and thermal fields of the flow,the dimensionless heat flux,the solidified mass fraction and the dimensionless time of complete solidification.

In this paper,phosphate nanoparticles were coated on cotton(CO)and polyester(PES)textile surfaces by sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)and chloropropyltriethoxysilane(CPTS)as silica precursors.The deposited nanoparticles were observed with scanning electronic microscopy energv-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDX).The release kinetics of phosphorus(P)from these textiles into the aqueous medium(Aq),acid(Ac),and basic(Ba)artificial sweats were then studied.The released amount of phosphorus was evaluated by the inductively coupled plasma(ICP)according to ISO NF EN 16711-2 procedure.The results revealed that the release of P into the aqueous medium is lower than in the artificial sweat.The kinetics data[the phosphoras desorption amount(mg/g)as a iunction of time]were modeled according to five models:the first order,the second order,the third order,simple elovich and parabolic diffusion.The suitable model was chosen based on the coefficient of determination(R2)and the calculation of the sum of the absolute errors(EABS),which describes the error between the theoretical and experimental values.SEM observations were also carried out on the fabrics after desorption in order to show the impact of desorption on their morphology.Furthermore,the impact of P release on the tensile strength of CO and PES fabrics was investigated using a uniaxial tensile test.The thennal stability of all samples before and after desorption was assessed by thermogravimetric aiialysis(ATG).

Safety of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide:an electrophysiologic and histopathological study in rabbits

AIM:To evaluate the retinal safety of various doses of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide(TA)in rabbits.METHODS:Thirty New Zealand albino rabbits were divided into five groups(six animals each).In group 1(control group),each animal received a single intravitreal injection of 0.1 mL phosphate buffered saline.In groups2,3,4 and 5,each rabbit received a single intravitreal injection of 4,8,16 and 32mg of TA,respectively.Each dose was contained in 0.1 mL phosphate buffered saline.Clinical ocular examinations were performed before the injection and on the 1st,3rd,10th and 17th postinjection days.A standard dark adapted electroretinogram(ERG)was obtained before injection and on the 3rd,10th and 17th post-injection days.After17d,animals were sacrificed and their eyes prepared for pathological examination.RESULTS:By monitoring ERG as a functional index for the retina,intravitreal injection of 4mg TA showed no significant ERG changes.At doses of 8,16 and 32,hyper-abnormal responses in a-and b-waves of ERG were detected on the 3rd post-injection day.These changes gradually returned back to normal limits after17d.Histopathological examination of the retina of all animals showed no pathological changes.CONCLUSION:High doses of intravitreal TA seemed to have enhancing effects on the retinal function with gradual return to normal limits with no pathological changes detected in examined eyes.

In the last two decades,the exploitation of marine renewable energies(70%of the globe is made up of oceans),especially wave energy,has attracted great interest,not only for their high potential,but also for their high energy density.The development of wave energy is suitable for countries or regions with extensive coastline and high waves approaching the shore.This paper focuses on the study of wave potential and wave energy distribution in the Casablanca-Mohammedia nearshore area(Moroccan Atlantic coast)in order to identify prospective wave energy hotspots.To achieve this purpose,the offshore wave potential was firstly estimated from a 20 years wave data provided by ECMWF(European Center for Medium range Weather Forecasts).In the second step,a numerical modeling of the wave propagation in the study area was performed using the SWAN model jointly with WAVEWATCHIII.The performance of the model to simulate accurately the wave field was evaluated in a real situation characterized by large waves.The model then was applied to determine the patterns of wave field in the Casablanca-Mohammedia nearshore area for a typical wave conditions(winter,summer and storm).The results of this study show the abundance of wave energy in the region with an average annual wave potential of about 22 kW/m.A seasonal variability of the wave resource was demonstrated,with values five times higher in winter than in summer.In addition,a major hotspot site was identified that should be considered when studyingWEC implementation.This hotspot is located at the southern edge of the Casablanca-Mohammedia coast,near the coastal area of Sidi Rahal.

Photopic negative response in diagnosis of glaucoma:an experimental study in glaucomatous rabbit model

AIM: To determine whether the photopic negative response(Ph NR) elicited by transient white flash on white background is characterizing for glaucoma model in rabbits.METHODS: Glaucoma was induced in twelve rabbits by subconjunctival injection of 0.05 m L of betamethasone in right eyes(each 1 m L contain betamethasone dipropionate5 mg and betamethasone sodium phosphate 2 mg).The intraocular pressure(IOP), electroretinogram(ERG) and visual evoked potential(VEP) were measured successively prior and on the 3, 7d, two weeks and four weeks postglaucoma induction. After four weeks, the animals were sacrificed and the globes were histopathologically examined.RESULTS: The IOP increased significantly after one week(P =0.0001), then it gradually returned to the control level. In ERG examination, the means of a and b wave amplitude and latency were not affected significantly.Ph NR amplitude decreased significantly within one week(P =0.0001), but its latency was not affected significantly(P =0.132). The means of VEP latency and amplitude were significantly affected after two weeks and four weeks of glaucoma induction(P =0.0001 and 0.02,respectively). The histopathologic examination of the globes showed reduced number of cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer with multiple vacuoles in the retinal nerve fibre layer.There was significant positive correlation between ganglion cell layer cells and Ph NR amplitude( r =0.8, P =0.002).CONCLUSION: The rise in IOP resulted in irreversible changes or incomplete recovery of VEP and Ph NR amplitude. Both Ph NR and VEP represented good additional tools in early diagnosis of glaucoma.

Effect of mesenchymal stem cells on anti-Thy1,1 induced kidney injury in albino rats

Objective:To evaluate the effect of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)in rats with anti-Thy 1,1nephritis.Methods:Female albino rats were divided into three groups,control group,anti-Thy 1,1group and treatment with i.v.MSCs group.MSCs were derived from bone marrow of male albino rats,Y—chromosome gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the kidney.Serum urea and creatinine were estimated for all groups.Kidney of all studied groups was examined histologically and histochemically(total carbohydrates and total proteins).DNA fragmentation and expression ofα-SMA were delected.Results:Kidney of animals injected with anti-Thy 1,1showed inflammatory leucocytic infiltration,hypertrophied glomeruli,tubular necrosis and congestion in the renal blood vessels.The kidney tissue also showed reduction of carbohydrates and total proteins together with increase in apoptosis and in expression ofα-SMA.Moreover,the levels of urea and creatinine were elevated.Treating animals with MSCs revealed that kidney tissue displayed an improvement in the histological and histochemical changes.Apoptosis andα-SMA expression were decreased,and the levels of urea and creatinine decreased.Conclusions:The obtained results demonstrated the potential of MSCs to ameliorate the structure and function of the kidney in rats with anti-Thy 1,1 nephritis possibly through the release of paracrine growth factor(s).
