Background:There is an urgent need to understand the pathways and processes underlying Alzheimer's disease(AD)for early diagnosis and development of effective *** study was aimed to investigate Alzheimer's dementia using an unsupervised lipid,protein and gene multi-omics integrative ***:A lipidomics dataset comprising 185 AD patients,40 mild cognitive impairment(MCI)individuals and 185 controls,and two proteomics datasets(295 AD,159 MCI and 197 controls)were used for weighted gene CO-expression network analyses(WGCNA).Correlations of modules created within each modality with clinical AD diagnosis,brain atrophy measures and disease progression,as well as their correlations with each other,were *** ontology enrichment analysis was employed to examine the biological processes and molecular and cellular functions of protein modules associated with AD *** species were annotated in the lipid modules associated with AD *** associations between established AD risk loci and the lipid/protein modules that showed high correlation with AD phenotypes were also ***:Five of the 20 identified lipid modules and five of the 17 identified protein modules were correlated with clinical AD diagnosis,brain atrophy measures and disease *** lipid modules comprising phospholipids,triglycerides,sphingolipids and cholesterol esters were correlated with AD risk loci involved in immune response and lipid *** five protein modules involved in positive regulation of cytokine production,neutrophil-mediated immunity,and humoral immune responses were correlated with AD risk loci involved in immune and complement systems and in lipid metabolism(the APOE ε4 genotype).Conclusions:Modules of tightly regulated lipids and proteins,drivers in lipid homeostasis and innate immunity,are strongly associated with AD phenotypes.

Awareness of mobile phone hazards among university students in a Malaysian medical school

This paper seeks to examine the awareness of potential health hazards by using mobile phone among AIMST (Asian Institute of Medical science and technology) University students. This is a cross-sectional survey conducted by distributing ‘perception questionnaire’. Perception of health hazards and outcomes were compared by gender, age, course of study, preferred ear, number of calls and SMS daily, the brand of mobile phone and use of mobile phone accessory (Bluetooth and hands free). The overall perception of mobile phone hazard in AIMST university student was 62%.Most subjects agreed that mobile phone usage can cause headache, loss of mental attention and sleeping disturbances and most disagree that mobile phone usage can cause constipation and diarrhea. Out of the 124 subjects who were aware of the side effects, 5% of the males and 10% of the females felt that there was no need to minimize the unwanted effects. The paper is useful to the general population particularly to the students as the perceived health risk did not significantly deter students from using mobile phone. The reasons given by students for the continued usage of mobile phone in spite of their awareness of the associated hazards have been discussed. This study offers new insight into level of awareness and perception of mobile phone hazard among University students.

The value of neurocognitive testing for acute outcomes after mild traumatic brain injury

Background: Traditionally, neurocognitive testing is performed weeks to months after head injury and is mostly performed on patients who continue to have symptoms or difficulties. In this study, we sought to determine whether these tests, when administered acutely, could assist in predicting short-term outcomes after acute traumatic brain injury(TBI).Methods: This is an IRB-approved prospective study of adult patients who came to the emergency department of our Level-1 trauma center with TBI. Patients were enrolled prospectively after providing written informed consent and underwent three separate neurocognitive tests: the Galveston Orientation Amnesia Test(GOAT), the Rivermead PostConcussion Survey Questionnaire(RPCSQ), and the Mini Mental Status Examination(MMSE).Results: A lower GOAT score was significantly associated with hospitalization(P=0.0212) and the development of post-concussion syndrome(PCS) at late follow-up(P=0.0081). A higher RPCSQ score was significantly associated with hospital admission(P=0.0098), re-admission within 30 days of discharge(P=0.0431) and evidence of PCS at early follow-up(P=0.0004). A higher MMSE score was significantly associated with not being admitted to the hospital(P=0.0002) and not returning to the emergency department(ED) within 72 hours of discharge(P=0.0078). Lower MMSE was also significantly associated with bleeding or a fracture on the brain CT(P=0.0431).Conclusions: While neurocognitive testing is not commonly performed in the ED in the setting of acute head injury, it is both feasible and appears to have value in predicting hospital admission and PCS. These data are especially important in terms of helping patients understand what to expect, thus, aiding in their recovery.

Forecasting risk using auto regressive integrated moving average approach: an evidence from S&P BSE Sensex

The primary objective of the paper is to forecast the beta values of companies listed on Sensex,Bombay Stock Exchange(BSE).The BSE Sensex constitutes 30 top most companies listed which are popularly known as blue-chip *** reach out the predefined objectives of the research,Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average method is used to forecast the future risk and returns for 10 years of historical data from April 2007 to March *** accomplished by comparison of forecasted and actual beta values for the hold back period of 2 ***-Mean-Square-Error and Mean-Absolute-Error both are used for accuracy *** results revealed that out of 30 listed companies in the BSE Sensex,10 companies’exhibits high beta values,12 companies are with moderate and 8 companies are with low beta ***,it is to note that Housing Development Finance Corporation(HDFC)exhibits more inconsistency in terms of beta values though the average beta value is lowest among the companies under the study.A mixed trend is found in forecasted beta values of the BSE *** this analysis,all the p-values are less than the F-stat values except the case of Tata Steel and ***,the null hypotheses were rejected leaving Tata Steel and *** values of actual and forecasted values are showing the almost same results with low error ***,it is concluded from the study that the estimation ARIMA could be acceptable,and forecasted beta values are *** far,there are many studies on ARIMA model to forecast the returns of the stocks based on their historical ***,hardly there are very few studies which attempt to forecast the returns on the basis of their beta ***,the attempt so made is a novel approach which has linked risk directly with *** the basis of the present study,authors try to through light on investment decisions by linking it with beta values of respective ***,the outcomes of the present study und

Background: Patients requiring valve replacement at a younger age, for rheumatic heart disease was apparently increasing after the new age practice of contraception. Methods: In 2012, data of patients referred to tertiary care hospital from two cardiology screening camps conducted in the community, were analyzed for the severity of presentation of rheumatic heart disease and associated contraception status by dividing into the three age groups—20 - 35 years, 36 - 50 years, >51 years;~400 patients attended the camps;31 female and 2 male patients were referred to the tertiary care hospital for further evaluation and categorized treatment, including valve replacement surgeries;among the 33 referred patients, belonging to the three age groups, the data were analyzed for [if any] correlation of contraception status with severe rheumatic heart disease. 8 randomly chosen males, of the 3 age groups, from a different community, whose life partners had undergone sterilization, were assessed for their serum testosterone levels. Results: Among 20 - 35 years, 7 female patients with contraception required valve replacement surgeries [p 51 years, 3 female and 2 male patients without contraception received medical treatment only

An Easterly Wave Generated Heavy Rainfall Event over South India—A Case Study

Easterly waves are one of the rain-bearing systems of northeast monsoon and produce massive rainfall events over south India. In the present case study, an attempt is made to identify extreme heavy rainfall event over south India on 26th October, 2006 due to the passage of the easterly wave. Satellite images provide an inverted v-shape easterly wave. Next, circulation features at different levels clearly indicate the location, movement and speed of the easterly wave. Strong north-easterlies with a magnitude of 9.9 m/s are maintained at the surface. The convergence is mainly occupied between 12°N - 16°N, while the divergence is 5°N - 12°N on 26th October, 2006 at the surface level. On 25th, easterly wave is advected north of trough with a magnitude of 0.2 m/s and increased during the remaining days. There are two divergence cells along 5°N and 16°N before and after the event at 700 hPa level. Thus this study helps to bring out the essential characteristics of the easterly wave during northeast monsoon. The highlight of this study is that the easterly wave creates floods in the absence of tropical cyclones over south India.
