The research of rare earths for the synthesis of materials with improved mechanical performance is of great interest when they are considered for potential applications in the automotive industry. In this regard, the effect on the mechanical properties and microstmcture of the automotive A356 aluminum alloy reinforced with 0.2 (wt.%) AI-6Ce-3la (ACL) was investigated. The ACL was added to the melted A356 alloy in the as-received condition and processed by mechanical milling. In the second route, the effect of the ACL processed by mechanical milling and powder metallurgy techniques was investigated, and compared with the results ob- tained from the A356 alloy strengthened with ACL in the as-received condition. Microstmctural properties were evaluated by means of X-ray diffraction in order to observe the solubility of Ce/la in the A1 matrix. In addition, electron microscopy was employed in or- der to investigate the effect of milling time on the size and morphology of la/Ce phase under milling process. Mechanical properties of the A356 alloy modified with ACL were measured by hardness and tensile test. For comparison unmodified specimens of the A356 were characterized according to the previous procedure. The microstructural and mechanical characterization was carried out in specimens alter solution and artificial aging. Observations in scanning electron microscopy indicated a homogeneous dispersion of la/Ce phases by using both routes; however, mechanical results, in the modified A356 alloy with the ACL in the as-received condi- tion, showed an improvement in the mechanical performance of the A356 alloy over that reinforced with the ACL mechanically milled.

Background and Aims:Hispanic patients with primary bili-ary cholangitis (PBC) have reduced rates of biochemical re-sponse to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and increased risk of disease progression compared to non-Hispanic patients. In this study, we sought to identify differences in demographics, comorbidities, environmental risk factors and socioeconomic status between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients with PBC. Methods: In a case control study, we analyzed data from Hispanic (n=37 females and 1 male) and non-Hispanic (n=54 females and 4 males) patients with PBC seen at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital from January 1998 through January 2013. Data were obtained by filling out a questionnaire either via phone call, mail, or e-mail. Odds ratios were calculated to measure the association between exposure and ***: Baseline demographics, environmental risk factors and comorbidities were similar be-tween Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients with PBC. Hispanic patients were less likely to be married and fewer Hispanics had education beyond high school level compared to non-His-panics. Sixty four percent of Hispanic patients had a house-hold income of less than$50000, compared to 19.5% of non-Hispanics. Fewer Hispanic patients with PBC had health insur-ance coverage compared to non-Hispanics (86.5% vs. 98.1%;odds ratio: 0.1, 95% confidence interval: 0-0.9). Conclusions: Differences in disease severity and response to therapy observed in prior studies could not be explained by environmental exposures. In addition to genetic variation, socioeconomic discrepancies (access to care) may further ex-plain these differences.

Propyl-propane-thiosulfonate(PTSO)is one of the main organosulfur compounds present in Allium essential oils with a widely documented biological *** this reason,it could be used as a food and feed additive in the agri-food industry.A genotoxicity evaluation of substances and their metabolites present in food is necessary to guarantee the consumer’s health following the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA).To evaluate the toxicological profile of derivatives of PTSO,the cytotoxicity,an Ames test,a micronucleus test and the comet assay were *** showed that non-cytotoxic effects were observed in Caco-2 exposed to s-propyl mercaptocysteine(CSSP)and s-propyl mercaptoglutathione(GSSP)(0-450μM).The mutagenicity index remained in the range of 0.6-1.4 for both compounds,showing no mutagenic effects for the concentrations of 5000-312.5μg GSSP/plate and 250-15.63μg CSSP/***,the%binucleated cells with micronuclei were 1.3-2.2 and 1.6-2.7 for GSSP and GSSP,*** comet assays there was no DNA-genotoxic or oxidative damage in a concentration range of 112.5-450μ***,we can conclude that these compounds are not genotoxic at the conditions *** results support that the presence of CSSP and GSSP in the food/feed is not of concern,although further studies are needed to complete their safety profile.
