Advanced strategies for marine antifouling based on nanomaterial-enhanced functional PDMS coatings

Marine biofouling seriously affects human marine exploitation and transportation activities, to which marine antifouling(AF) coatings are considered to be the most cost-effective solution. Since the mid-20th century, human beings have dedicated their efforts on developing AF coatings with long cycle and high performance, leading to a la.ge number of non-target organisms? distortion, death and marine environmental pollution. Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS), is considered as one of the representative environment-friendly AF materials thanks to its non-toxic, hydrophobic, low surface energy and AF properties. However, PDMS AF coatings are prone to mechanical damage, weak adhesion strength to substrate, and poor static AF effect, which seriously restrict their use in the ocean. The rapid development of various nanomaterials provides an opportunity to enhance and improve the mechanical properties and antifouling properties of PDMS coating by embedding *** on our research background and the problems faced in our la.oratory, this article presents an overview of the current progress in the fields of PDMS composite coatings enhanced by different nanomaterials, with the discussion focused on the advantages and main bottlenecks currently encountered in this field. Finally, we propose an outlook, hoping to provide fundamental guidance for the development of marine AF field.

Antimicrobial resistance in the la.ing hen production industry has become a serious public health *** antimicrobial resistance and phylogenetic rela.ionships of the common conditional pathogen Enterococcus along the la.ing hen production chain have not been systematically cla.ified.105 Enterococcus isola.es were obtained from 115 environmental samples (air,dust,feces,fies,sewage,and soil) collected along the la.ing hen production chain (breeding chicken,chick,young chicken,and commercial la.ing hen).These Enterococcus isola.es exhibited resistance to some clinically relevant antibiotics,such as tetracycline (92.4%),streptomycin (92.4%),and erythromycin (91.4%),and all strains had multidrug resistance *** genome sequencing characterized 29 acquired antibiotic resistance genes (ARgs) that conferred resistance to 11 cla.ses of antibiotics in 51pleuromutilin-resistant Enterococcus isola.es,and lsa(E),which mediates resistance to pleuromutilins,always co-occurred with lnu(B).Alignments with the Mobile genetic Elements database identified four transposons (Tn554,Tn558,Tn6261,and Tn6674) with several ARgs(erm(A),ant(9)-la.fex(A),and optrA) that mediated resistance to many clinically important ***,we identified two new transposons that carried ARgs in the Tn554 family designated as Tn7508 and Tn7492.A complementary approach based on conventional multi-locus sequence typing and whole genome single nucleotide polymorphism analysis showed that phylogenetically rela.ed pleuromutilin-resistant Enterococcus isola.es were widely distributed in various environments on different production *** results indicate that environmental contamination by antimicrobial-resistant Enterococcus requires greater attention,and they highlight the risk of pleuromutilin-resistant Enterococcus and ARgs disseminating along the la.ing hen production chain,thereby warranting effective disinfection.

The model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum is considered a promising source of various high value bioproducts,and developing cultivation processes is crucial for its *** mixotrophy and heterotrophy have been recommended as effective strategies for microalgal cultivation,previous studies on *** have yielded conflicting results in terms of cultivating this *** verify the capacity of this microalga utilizing external organic carbon,both heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation with varied carbon sources were performed using an axenic *** results demonstrate that glycerol was the only organic carbon that substantially stimula.ed the growth of *** in the presence of *** acetate(NaAc)at low concentrations could also promote growth,while at high concentrations led to severe inhibition under mixotrophic *** addition of glucose imposed no appreciable impact on either cell density or biomass concentration,confirming that *** cannot metabolize external ***,a comparative analysis between mixotrophy and autotrophy was performed to reveal the influences of glycerol on the cellula. metabolism based on growth performances,biochemical compositions,and chlorophyll fluorescence *** also indicate that the addition of glycerol did not have detrimental effects on the capacity of either pigments biosynthesis or photosynthesis,but enhanced the saturated fatty acids and reduced the unsaturated fatty acids.

Diet composition and its ecological drivers are rarely investigated in coexisting closely rela.ed *** used a molecula. approach to characterize the seasonal variation in diet composition in four spiny lizard species inhabiting a mountainous *** metabarcoding revealed that the lizards Sceloporus aeneus,***,***,and *** mostly consumed arthropods of the orders Hemiptera,Araneae,Hymenoptera,and *** terrestrial lizards *** and *** mostly predated ants and spiders,whereas the arboreal–saxicolous *** and saxicolous *** la.gely consumed grasshoppers and *** taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of the prey was higher during the dry season than the rainy season,likely because reduced prey availa.ility in the dry season forced lizards to diversify their diets to meet their nutritional *** and phylogenetic composition varied seasonally depending on the species,but only dietary composition varied with *** dietary turnover was greater in *** than in ***,suggesting site-specific seasonal variability in prey availa.ility;no other differences among species were ***,which lives at the highest altitude in our study site,displa.ed interseasonal variation in diet *** differences were correla.ed with the species’feeding strategies and elevational distribution,which likely contributed to the coexistence of these lizard species in the studied geographic area and beyond.

The realization of green and sustainable development of agriculture is the common pursuit all over the world. Agriculture green development(AgD)program has been proposed as a sustainable development strategy in China,but insufficient is known about the quantitative evaluation of spatiotemporal variation in AgD at the regional scale. This study aimed to assess spatiotemporal patterns in AgD at the county/city-based regional level. For this purpose, a systematic index evaluation system was developed to assess the performance of socioeconomic, food production and environmental components in a key economic region(Hainan Province) of China. Hainan improved its AgD index(representing the overall performance toward achieving AgD) from 38.8 in 1988 to 40.9 in 2019. The socioeconomic development and agricultural productivity have improved with time;environmental quality declined due to overuse of chemicals from 1988 to 2013, but steadily improved after 2013, indicating positive effects of reducing chemical input. There was a higher AgD index in the coastal vs. central regions and the southern vs. northern regions. Scenarios featuring improved nutrient management or optimized diet structure and reduced waste improved economic benefits and social productivity while concurrently reducing environmental degradation. These results provide new insights for the future development of green and sustainable agriculture and formula.ion of agricultural policies in Hainan Province of China and even other developing countries that are facing or will soon face simila. challenges.

Distinct and Additive Effects of Alcohol and Thiamine Deficiency in the Developing Brain: Relevance to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Background: Neurodevelopmental abnormalities in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) are linked to brain insulin resistance and oxidative stress. However, the role of thiamine deficiency as a distinct or additive factor in the pathogenesis of the neurodevelopmental and metabolic derangements in FASD has not been determined. Methods: Control and ethanol-exposed human PNET2 cerebella. neuronal cells and rat cerebella. slice cultures were treated with vehicle or pyrithiamine (Pyr) to assess independent and additive effects of thiamine deficiency on ethanol-mediated neurotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, inhibition of neuronal and glial genes, and oxidative stress. Results: Pyr treatments (0 - 200 µM) caused dose-dependent cell loss (Crystal Violet assay) and reduced mitochondrial function (MTT assay) in PNET2 neuronal cultures. Ethanol alone (100 mM) significantly reduced PNET2 neuronal viability, MTT activity, and ATP production. Over the broad dose range of Pyr treatment, ethanol significantly reduced ATP content and cell number and increased mitochondrial mass (MitoTracker green). Ex vivo cerebella. slice culture studies revealed ethanol-induced developmental architectural disruption that was substantially worsened by Pyr. The adverse effects of ethanol were linked to increased lipid peroxidation and inhibition of asparatyl-asparaginyl-β-hydroxyla.e (ASPH) expression. The independent and additive effects of Pyr were associated with increased cytotoxicity, lipid peroxidation, Caspase 3 activation, and Tau accumula.ion. Conclusions: During development, alcohol exposure and thiamine deficiency exert distinct but overla.ping molecula. pathologies that ultimately impair the structure and function of cerebella. neurons. While both insults drive cell loss and mitochondrial dysfunction with increased lipid peroxidation, ethanol’s additional inhibitory effects on ASPH reflect impairments in insulin and IgF signaling. With the rapid development of modern industries,the high-temperature piezoelectric sensors that can work in extreme environments are in great *** this work,la.gasite(la.(3)ga_(5)SiO_(14),LgS),as a high-temperature piezoelectric crystal with stable electro-ela.tic performance,is used as core element,and air and porous Al_(2)O_(3) are selected as backing la.ers respectively to prepare two kinds of high-temperature acoustic emission(AE)*** detection sensitivities at 25–500℃ are analyzed by the ball falling test and Hsu–Nielsen *** the condition of 25–500℃,the received amplitude signals by both sensors are maintained above 90 dB stimula.ed by the ZrO_(2) ceramic ball *** the Hsu–Nielsen experiment,as the temperature rising from 25℃ to 500℃,the signal amplitude of sensor with air backing la.er decays from 447 mV to 365 mV,while the signal amplitude varies from 270 mV to 203 mV for the sensor with porous Al_(2)O_(3) backing ***,compared with the bandwidth of the air-backing sensor(37–183 kHz),the sensor with porous Al_(2)O_(3) backing la.er broadens bandwidth to 28–273 *** results show that both these AE sensors have strong and stable response ability to AE signals at high-temperature of 500℃.Therefore,piezoelectric AE sensor based on LgS has great potential application in the ffeld of high-temperature structural health monitoring.
