Atmospheric Pollutants in a Commercial Region of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil: Integration of Health, Environment and Economy in Urban Planning to Improve Air Quality

The accelerated growth of the vehicular fleet, the modernization of large urban centers, and the few adjustments to the road network in Fortaleza have intensified the problems of traffic and emissions of atmospheric pollutants, highlighting the necessity for strategic urban planning initiatives to address the escalating issues of traffic and pollution. With the objective of analyzing the indices of concentrations of atmospheric pollutants and estimating how these levels can affect human health, this work consists of a study of the analysis of air quality in the intense trade region of Fortaleza. For this, the analysis zone was divided into three perimeters (Major - Medium - Minor), where each perimeter was analyzed at 7 am, 12 noon and 5 pm. Concentrations of the type of O3, particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), CO2 and HCHO were collected. Our results demonstrate that most of the analyses are within the limits of current legislation;however, at certain times and perimeters, the analyses of CO2 and HCHO exceeded the established limits. In view of the above, we conclude that public policies to control air quality are necessary to reduce the damage to human health and the environment caused by pollutants.

Situations of Domestic Violence against Children and Adolescents in a Northeastern Brazilian Capital

Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of children and adolescents who are victims of domestic violence. Method: This is a cross sectional and descriptive study, following a quantitative approach, conducted from September to december 2013, at the SOS CHILD service, in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The research protocol was approved by CEP/UFRN under CAAE 0166.***.051.000-11. Results: In the analysis of 69 children, the results were presented from three points of view: 1) the victim—female (56.5%), aged one to 11 years old (66.7%) and lived with one of the parents (43.5%);2) the abuser—female (60.9%) in the 14 - 23 years old and 34 - 43 years old, with the same percentage (24.6%), history of alcohol use and abuse (42.0%), the mother was the one who attacked the most (34.7%);3) types of violence, among the physical ones, the most frequent were slaps (43.2%) and punches (18.9%);the prevalence, among the psychological violence, were curses (35.4%) and abuse (27.8%);negligence, omission of care (73.5%), deprivation of care for personal appearance (18.4%);among sexual violence: sexual caresses (57.1%) and forced sex (42.9%). Conclusion: Children and adolescents placed in an unfavorable social-economic context, under the care of mothers with a history of use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs, are more vulnerable to intra-domiciliary violence.

The purpose of this paper is to classify wines from 4 different countries in South *** class of wines is formed by samples considered by experts as representatives of the following commercial categories:“Argentinean Malbec(AM)”,“Brazilian Merlot(BM)”,“Uruguayan Tannat(UT)”and“Chilean Carménère(CC)”.The 83 samples collected were analyzed according to their composition of volatiles,semi-volatiles and phenolic *** built a decision system for classification based on support vector machines(SVM),along with Correlation-based Feature selection(CFS),and RandomForest Importance(RFI),whichmeasures the relative importance of the input ***,we use CFS to select a subset of variables among 190 chemical *** chemicals were selected as correlated to the category and uncorrelated with each ***,these chemical compounds were organized according to the importance ranking given by the RFI and classified with *** study clearly indicated that SVMin combination with feature selection methodswas able to identify the most important chemicals to classify the wine *** the compounds identified in the wine samples,the variable subset defined by the feature selection methods,which were catechin,gallic,octanoic acid,myricetin,caffeic,isobutanol,resveratrol,kaempferol,and ORAC,were able to achieve an accuracy of 93.97%in classifying the commercial categories.

Peri-intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the main causes of neurological impairment in premature newborns. To control their risk factors is necessary in view of the increasing survival of extreme preterm infants. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of peri-intraventricular hemorrhage in premature newborns, identify the risk factors and observe the frequencies of intra-hospital outcomes of interests. Methods: This study was done in Brazil. This was an observational, analytical longitudinal and prospective study. The subjects included were newborns of gestational age less than 34 weeks who were admitted to two public hospitals between May and November 2015. Standardization of Sampling for Isolation of Exosome-Like Small-Extracellular Vesicles from Peripheral Blood from Reproductive-Aged Women

Exosome-like small-extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are extracellular vesicles that act in intercellular communication and are involved in several biologic and pathologic processes. While sEVs increase the stability of their cargo molecules, there is still a need for standardization of sampling and isolation of these microvesicles. We aimed to determine the best sampling method for isolation of sEVs from peripheral blood from reproductive-aged women. Material and Methods: We included samples of plasma from our biobank collected in 2014 by venipuncture in heparin tubes and stored at -80°C. We also included blood samples collected in heparin tubes and Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes and stored at -80°C for one to two weeks prior processing. All blood samples were collected from the same nine reproductive-aged female volunteers. sEVs were isolated from plasma by ultracentrifugation and filtration and indirectly quantified using Pierce BCA Protein Assay kit. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Nano Tracking Analysis (NTA) were performed to confirm the isolation of sEVs. Results and Discussion: TEM and NTA confirmed the isolation of sEVs. Protein concentration of short-time stored heparin samples was not statistically different from long-time stored heparin samples (1847.2 ± 651.4 vs. 2363.2 ± 1025.1, p = 0.14). There was no difference between heparin and EDTA plasma samples recently collected (2363.2 ± 1025.1 vs. 2044.8 ± 653.2, p = 0.44). In conclusion, blood samples may be collected using heparin or EDTA for isolation of sEVs. Long-time stored plasma samples maintain sEVs integrity and may be used, especially in comparative studies.

Background: Crizotinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor of ALK, MET and ROS1. In a safety database trial, it was suggested an association of Crizotinib with the development of renal cyst in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Aim: To report an uncommon side effect of Crizotinib in a patient with NSLC. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 68-year-old woman with NSCLC who developed bilateral progressive aseptic renal abscesses during Crizotinib treatment. Conclusion: Further studies may be necessary to determinate the risk of renal cyst development and the management of these complications.

Evaluation of Sleep Quality in Undergraduated Medical Students

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sleep quality of medical students to identify the main factors that affect sleep patterns. Methods: According to the methodology, 154 students participated in the research, attending from the first to the sixth year of the course. The Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and the Epworth sleepiness scale were applied. descriptive statistics techniques were applied and demonstrated in the form of tables and graphs. The comparison of variables was carried out using statistical tests. Results: The results showed that most students do not sleep very well. It was observed that 68.83% of a total of 106 students are bad sleepers. Conclusion: It is concluded that medical students sleep a low number of hours by period, which could interfere in impairment of attention, learning and memory formation, interfering in academic performance. On the other hand, they showed greater daytime sleepiness compared to the general population.

Ecological and hydrological impacts are expected when watersheds are under commercial *** this study we evaluated event-based hydrology and sedimentation in paired watersheds under commercial eucalyptus and grasslands ***,suspended sediment concentration,and sediment production were measured and simulated with the Limburg Soil Erosion Model(LISEM)in paired hydrographic watersheds located in southern Brazil;one occupied with 7-years old Eucalyptus saligna plantation(forest watershed-FW;0.83 km^(2))and another Pampa biome with native and exotic grasses used for beef cattle production(grassland watershed-GW;1.10 km^(2)).The effect of rainfall on hydrological and sedimentological variables was more evident in GW compared with *** shape of the hydrograph was steepest in GW,with rapid,marked increase and decrease in flow during *** parameters changed for model calibration in FW and GW were soil saturated hydraulic conductivity,initial soil moisture,and Manning roughness coefficient,whereby the statistical performance was classified as good(NSE>0.75).Fourteen events different from those used in the calibration process were validated for FW and GW,with NSE index classified as“good”and“very good”for *** study shows limitations of LISEM in calibrating and validating the sediment yield for individual events due to the spatial variability of factors controlling soil *** validated modeling results of this study may be applied in simulating soil and crop scenarios in watersheds cultivated with commercial forest and grassland for grazing.

BACKGROUND Perioperative fluorouracil plus leucovorin,oxaliplatin,and docetaxel(FLOT)improves prognosis in locally advanced gastric cancer(laGC).Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte(NLR),lymphocyte-tomonocyte(LMR),and platelet-to-lymphocyte(PLR)ratios are prognostic biomarkers but not predictive *** To assess blood ratios’(NLR,LMR and PLR)potential predictive response to FLOT and survival outcomes in resectable laGC *** This was a multicentric retrospective study investigating the clinical potential of NLR,LMR,and PLR in resectable laGC patients,treated with at least one preoperative FLOT cycle,from 12 Portuguese *** were compared through non-parametric Mann-Whitney *** operating characteristic curve analysis defined the cut-off values as:High PLR>141 for progression and>144 for mortality;high LMR>3.56 for T stage regression(TSR).Poisson and Cox regression models the calculated relative risks/hazard ratios,using NLR,pathologic complete response,TSR,and tumor regression grade(TRG)as independent variables,and overall survival(OS)as the dependent *** This study included 295 patients(mean age,63.7 years;59.7% males).NLR was correlated with survival time(r=0.143,P=0.014).PLR was associated with systemic progression during FLOT(P=0.022)and mortality(P=0.013),with high PLR patients having a 2.2-times higher risk of progression[95% confidence interval(CI):0.89-5.26]and 1.5-times higher risk of mortality(95%CI:0.92-2.55).LMR was associated with TSR,and high LMR patients had a 1.4-times higher risk of achieving TSR(95%CI:1.01-1.99).OS benefit was found with TSR(P=0.015)and partial/complete TRG(Pdence of pathological response had 2.1-times(95%CI:1.14-3.96)and 2.8-times(95%CI:1.6-5)higher risk of *** Higher NLR is correlated with longer survival *** LMR patients have a higher risk of decreasing T stage,whereas high PLR patients have higher odds of progressing under FLOT a

Mechanical Circulatory Support in Patients with Sepsis： A Case Series

MCS （mechanical circulatory support） has shown great efficacy in treatment of respiratory mid cardiovascular diseases when conventional therapy is insufficient. The use of ECMO （extracolporeal membrane oxygenation） for the treatment of cardiogenic shock secondary to sepsis is still controversial. Studies have shown that ECMO should be considered as a valuable therapeutic option in cases of refractory cardiovascular dysfunction in severe septic patients, although more studies ale needed to consolidate its efficacy. We report the case of two patients, without previous history of cardiopathy, subjected to temporary MCS, with use of ECMO for the treatment of refractory cardiogenic shock secondary to sepsis.
