A research has been carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of composites made by hybridizing sugar palm fibre （Arenga pinnata） with glass fibre into an unsaturated polyester matrix. Hybrid composites of glass/sugar palm fibre were fabricated in different weight ratios of strand mat glass fibres ： sugar palm fibres 4：0, 4：1, 4：2, 4：3, 4：4, and 0：4. the hybrid effects of glass and sugar palm fibre on tensile, flexural and impact properties of the composites were evaluated according to AstM D5083, AstM D790 and AstM D256 respectively. Results have been established that properties of hybrid glass/sugar palm composites such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, toughness, flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength are a function of fibre content. the failure mechanism and the adhesion between fibres/matrix were studied by observing the scanning electron micrographs of impact fracture samples. In general, the incorporation of both fibres into unsaturated polyester matrix shows a regular trend of increase in the mechanical properties.

Pterocarpus indicus Willd is a tropical woody legume that holds promise for plantation forestry. two glasshouse experiments were undertaken on two soil types to determine the phosphorus （P） concentration ranges in the foliage of P-stressed and healthy plants, and to define cri- tical P concentrations for the diagnosis of deficiency and toxicity. there was a narrow range in rates of P fertilizer, supplied as Ca（H2PO4）2.H2O, between deficiency and toxicity compared to other tree species. the relationship between shoot yield and P concentration in the youngest fully expanded leaf enabled critical P concentrations for the diagnosis of deficiency （0.17 %） and toxicity （0.41%） to be determined at 90 % maximum yield from linear re- gressions fitted to the data. the foliar P concentration ranges for deficiency and toxicity were similar to other nitrogen-fixing trees. the defined P concentration ranges and the critical P concentrations for the diagnosis of P deficiency and P toxicity should be useful for monitoring the P status of nursery stock and the health of young seedlings after out-planting.

surface wave inversion is a key step in the application of surface waves to soil velocity ***,a common practice for the process of inversion is that the number of soil layers is assumed to be known before using heuristic search algorithms to compute the shear wave velocity profile or the number of soil layers is considered as an optimization ***,an improper selection of the number of layers may lead to an incorrect shear wave velocity *** this study,a deep learning and genetic algorithm hybrid learning procedure is proposed to perform the surface wave inversion without the need to assume the number of soil ***,a deep neural network is adapted to learn from a large number of synthetic dispersion curves for inferring the layer ***,the shear-wave velocity profile is determined by a genetic algorithm with the known layer *** applying this procedure to both simulated and real-world cases,the results indicate that the proposed method is reliable and efficient for surface wave inversion.

spreadsheets are very common for information processing to support decision making by both professional developers and non-technical end ***,business intelligence and artificial intelligence are increasingly popular in the industry nowadays,where spreadsheets have been used as,or integrated into,intelligent or expert systems in various application ***,it has been repeatedly reported that faults often exist in operational spreadsheets,which could severely compromise the quality of conclusions and decisions based on the *** a view to systematically examining this problem via survey of existing work,we have conducted a comprehensive literature review on the quality issues and related techniques of spreadsheets over a 35.5-year period(from January 1987 to June 2022)for target journals and a 10.5-year period(from January 2012 to June 2022)for target *** other findings,two major ones are:(a)spreadsheet quality is best addressed throughout the whole spreadsheet life cycle,rather than just focusing on a few specific stages of the life cycle.(b)Relatively more studies focus on spreadsheet testing and debugging(related to fault detection and removal)when compared with spreadsheet specification,modeling,and design(related to development).As prevention is better than cure,more research should be performed on the early stages of the spreadsheet life *** by our comprehensive review,we have identified the major research gaps as well as highlighted key research directions for future work in the area.

Dopant redistribution in a silicon nanowire （siNW） p-n junction is found to occur owing to self-heating effects. A siNW is doped to form back-to-back diodes and is thermally isolated by an oxide layer on its bottom side and by air on the other sides. When a high level of current flows, the inner body temperature is found to increase enough to cause dopant diffusion and even to reach the silicon melting point due to Joule heating. this experimentally observed electrothermal behavior is also validated through numerical simulation. the conductivity change is dependent on the total power density and the change becomes permanent once the device suffers self-heating beyond a threshold point. Finally, the dopant redistribution is directly visualized using scanning capacitance microscopy for the first time.

shape matching plays an important role in various computer vision and graphics applications such as shape retrieval, object detection, image editing,image retrieval, etc. However, detecting shapes in cluttered images is still quite challenging due to the incomplete edges and changing perspective. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that can efficiently identify a queried shape in a cluttered image. the core idea is to acquire the transformation from the queried shape to the cluttered image by summarising all pointto-point transformations between the queried shape and the image. to do so, we adopt a point-based shape descriptor, the pyramid of arc-length descriptor(PAD),to identify point pairs between the queried shape and the image having similar local shapes. We further calculate the transformations between the identified point pairs based on PAD. Finally, we summarise all transformations in a 4 D transformation histogram and search for the main cluster. Our method can handle both closed shapes and open curves, and is resistant to partial occlusions. Experiments show that our method can robustly detect shapes in images in the presence of partial occlusions, fragile edges, and cluttered backgrounds.

Wireless capsule endoscopy(WCE) is a promising technique which has overcome some limitations of traditional diagnosing tools, such as the comfortlessness of the cables and the inability of examining small intestine section. However, this technique is still far from mature and asks for the feasible improvements. For example, the relatively low transmission data rate and the absence of the real-time localization information of the capsule are all important issues. the studies of them rely on the understanding of the electromagnetic wave propagation in human body. Investigation of performance of WCE communication system was carried out by studying electromagnetic(EM) wave propagation of the wireless capsule endoscopy transmission channel. starting with a pair of antennas working in a human body mimic environment, the signal transmissions and attenuations were examined. the relationship between the signal attenuation and the capsule(transmitter) position, and direction was also evaluated. these results provide important information for real-time localization of the capsule. Moreover, the pair of antennas and the human body were treated as a transmission channel, on which the binary amplitude shift keying(BAsK) modulation scheme was used. the relationship between the modulation scheme, data rate and bit error rate was also determined in the case of BAsK. With the obtained studies, it make possible to provide valuable information for further studies on the selection of the modulation scheme and the real-time localization of the capsules.

An atmosphere-only model system for making seasonal prediction and projecting future intensities of landfalling tropical cyclones(tCs)along the south China coast is upgraded by including ocean and wave models.A total of 642 tCs have been re-simulated using the new system to produce a climatology of tC intensity in the south China *** comparisons of the simulations from the atmosphere-only and the fully coupled systems reveal that the inclusion of the additional ocean and wave models enable differential sea surface temperature responses to various tC characteristics such as translational speed and *** particular,interaction with the ocean does not necessarily imply a weakening of the tC,with the coastal bathymetry possibly playing a role in causing a near-shore intensification of the *** results suggest that to simulate the evolution of tC structure more accurately,it is essential to use an air-sea coupled model instead of an atmosphere-only model.
