ARPES investigation of the electronic structure and its evolution in magnetic topological insulator MnBi2+2nTe4+3n family

In the past 5 years,there has been significant research interest in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator family compounds MnBi2+2nTe4+3n（where n=0,1,2…）.In particular,exfoliated thin films of MnBi2Te4have led to numerous experimental breakthroughs,such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect,axion insulator phase and high-Chern number quantum Hall effect without Landau levels.However,despite extensive efforts,the energy gap of the topological surface states due to exchange magnetic coupling,which is a key feature of the characteristic band structure of the system,remains experimentally elusive.The electronic structure measured by using angle-resolved photoemission （ARPES） shows significant deviation from ab initio prediction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements,making it challenging to understand the transport results based on the electronic structure.This paper reviews the measurements of the band structure of MnBi2+2nTe4+3nmagnetic topological insulators using ARPES,focusing on the evolution of their electronic structures with temperature,surface and bulk doping and film thickness.The aim of the review is to construct a unified picture of the electronic structure of MnBi2+2nTe4+3ncompounds and explore possible control of their topological properties.

A high-performance electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction derived from copolymer-anchored polyoxometalates

The development and synthesis of cathode electrocatalysts with high activity and durable stability for metal-air batteries is an important challenge in the area of electrocatalysis.Herein,we introduce a novel in-situ nitriding and phosphating strategy for producing W_(3)N_(4)and WP from phosphotungstic acid(HPW)-polyaniline-phytic acid-Fe3+organic-inorganic hybrid material.The final material has a three-dimensional porous framework with W_(3)N_(4)-WP heterostructures embedded in the carbon matrix(W_(3)N_(4)-WP@NPC).As-made materials exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),with a diffusion-limiting current density of 6.9 mA·cm^(−2)and a half-wave potential of 0.82 V.As a Zn-air primary cathode,the W_(3)N_(4)-WP@NPC assembled battery can provide a relatively high peak power density(194.2 mW·cm^(−2)).As a Zn-air secondary air-cathode,it has great cycling stability over 500 h.This work provides a simple and efficient method for rationally designing high-performance air cathodes from copolymer-anchored polyoxometalates.

How neonatal diet affects the long-term development of rumination behavior, rumen fermentation and feed digestion in dairy calves fed a high milk level?

This study was to investigate growth performance, rumination development, rumen fermentation and feed digestion in young calves provided high volumes(about 20% of calf birth weight) of milk with or without forage inclusion and how these parameters correlate with each other. Immediately after birth,160 newborn Holstein female calves(41.6 ± 4.2 kg of initial BW) were randomly divided into 2 treatments: 1) starter(CON, only starter) and 2) starter and hay(HAY, both starter and hay). The calves were fed their respective experimental diets from d 4 to 84, after which they were all introduced to similar diets until the end of the experiment on d 196. Treatment had no effect on growth and structural measurements throughout the experimental period. However, treatment had an effect on the other parameters, mainly during the post-weaning period. Forage supplementation tended to reduce starter dry matter intake(P = 0.05), while increasing the forage intake(P < 0.01) and the feed-to-gain ratio(P < 0.01). HAY calves had increased neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and physically effective NDF(peNDF)intakes(P < 0.05) and tended to lower(P < 0.01) starch intake compared to CON calves. The HAY calves had a higher rumination time(P < 0.01), ruminal pH(P < 0.01), and acetate-to-propionate ratio(P = 0.05)compared to the CON calves. Spearman correlation analysis showed that rumination time was positively related to the ruminal p H at d 84(P = 0.01) and 196(P = 0.02). The HAY calves had similar apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter(DM), NDF and ether extract(EE), but lower digestibility of organic matter(OM, P = 0.03), crude protein(CP, P < 0.01) and starch(P < 0.01) compared to those of the CON calves at week 12. Furthermore, there were no positive relationships between rumination time and nutrient digestibility or between rumination time per kilogram DM and nutrient digestibility. In conclusion, feeding hay to calves fed a high milk level improved rumination during the post-weaning period only, without a concomitant effect on

Diabetic nephropathy(DN)is a severe complication of diabetes,characterized by changes in kidney structure and function.The natural product rosmarinic acid(RA)has demonstrated therapeutic effects,including anti-inflammation and anti-oxidative-stress,in renal damage or dysfunction.In this study,we characterized the heterogeneity of the cellular response in kidneys to DN-induced injury and RA treatment at single cell levels.Our results demonstrated that RA significantly alleviated renal tubular epithelial injury,particularly in the proximal tubular S1 segment and on glomerular epithelial cells known as podocytes,while attenuating the inflammatory response of macrophages,oxidative stress,and cytotox-icity of natural killer cells.These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms by which RA alleviates kidney damage,oxidative stress,and inflammation,offering valuable guidance for the clinical application of RA in the treatment of DN.

Highly efficient tunable photodetector with a bipolar response in van der Waals heterojunctions

The heterojunction integration of two-dimensional(2D)materials via van der Waals(vdW)forces,unencumbered by lattice and processing constraints,constitutes an efficacious approach to enhance the overall optoelectronic performance of photodetectors,due to an assortment of distinctive light-matter interactions.Nonetheless,vdW heterojunction photodetectors based on transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)face an inevitable trade-off between low dark currents and high responsivity,curtailing the application potential of myriad novel optoelectronic components in sensing,spectral,and communication systems.In this study,we present the successful actualization of a highly sensitive,self-powered,and gate-tunable bipolar response photodetector.The mechanisms underlying photocurrent generation were scrutinized via bias-,power-,and position-dependent mapping photoresponse measurements,identifying the photovoltaic effect,which is attributable to the Schottky junction’s built-in electric field,as the predominant mechanism.The prototype Au-WS2-graphene photodetector exhibits a remarkable light on/off ratio of 1.2×10^(6),a specific detectivity of 6.12×10^(11)cm H^(z1/2)W^(-1)with 20μs response time at 638 nm.The wide gate-tunable responsivity provides an adjustability scope,ranging from 0.9 to 3.1 A W^(-1).Notably,the device demonstrates an exceptional linear photocurrent response,with a linear dynamic range(LDR)value approximating 130 dB,which significantly surpasses that of other photodetectors based on TMDs.

Frameworked electrolytes:Ionic transport behavior and high mobility for solid state batteries

All solid-state batteries(ASSBs)are the holy grails of rechargeable batteries,where extensive searches are ongoing in the pursuit of ideal solid-state electrolytes.Nevertheless,there is still a long way off to the satisfactorily high(enough)ionic conductivity,long-term stability and especially being able to form compatible interfaces with the solid electrodes.Herein,we have explored ionic transport behavior and high mobility in the sub-nano pore networks in the framework structures.Macroscopically,the frameworked electrolyte behaves as a solid,and however in the(sub)-nano scales,the very limited number of solvent molecules in confinement makes them completely different from that in liquid electrolyte.Differentiated from a liquid-electrolyte counterpart,the interactions between the mobile ions and surrounding molecules are subject to dramatic changes,leading to a high ionic conductivity at room temperature with a low activation energy.Li+ions in the sub-nano cages of the network structure are highly mobile and diffuse rather independently,where the rate-limiting step of ions crossing cages is driven by the local concentration gradient and the electrostatic interactions between Li^(+)ions.This new class of frameworked electrolytes(FEs)with both high ionic conductivity and desirable interface with solid electrodes are demonstrated to work with Li-ion batteries,where the ASSB with LiFePO_(4)shows a highly stable electrochemical performance of over 450 cycles at 2℃ at room temperature,with an almost negligible capacity fade of 0.03‰ each cycle.In addition,the FE shows outstanding flexibility and anti-flammability,which are among the key requirements of large-scale applications.

Gut microbial interactions based on network construction and bacterial pairwise cultivation

Association networks are widely applied for the prediction of bacterial interactions in studies of human gut microbiomes.However,the experimental validation of the predicted interactions is challenging due to the complexity of gut microbiomes and the limited number of cultivated bacteria.In this study,we addressed this challenge by integrating in vitro time series network(TSN) associations and cocultivation of TSN taxon pairs.Fecal samples were collected and used for cultivation and enrichment of gut microbiome on YCFA agar plates for 13 days.Enriched cells were harvested for DNA extraction and metagenomic sequencing.A total of 198 metagenome-assembled genomes(MAGs) were recovered.Temporal dynamics of bacteria growing on the YCFA agar were used to infer microbial association networks.To experimentally validate the interactions of taxon pairs in networks,we selected 24 and 19 bacterial strains from this study and from the previously established human gut microbial biobank,respectively,for pairwise co-cultures.The co-culture experiments revealed that most of the interactions between taxa in networks were identified as neutralism(51.67%),followed by commensalism(21.67%),amensalism(18.33%),competition(5%) and exploitation(3.33%).Genome-centric analysis further revealed that the commensal gut bacteria(helpers and beneficiaries) might interact with each other via the exchanges of amino acids with high biosynthetic costs,short-chain fatty acids,and/or vitamins.We also validated 12 beneficiaries by adding 16 additives into the basic YCFA medium and found that the growth of 66.7% of these strains was significantly promoted.This approach provides new insights into the gut microbiome complexity and microbial interactions in association networks.Our work highlights that the positive relationships in gut microbial communities tend to be overestimated,and that amino acids,short-chain fatty acids,and vitamins are contributed to the positive relationships.

Optimal Timing of Antiretroviral Therapy Initiation in Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome-Associated Toxoplasmic Encephalitis:A Prospective Observational Multicenter Study in China

Background:Toxoplasmic encephalitis(TE)is the most frequent cause of expansive brain lesions among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS).However,the optimal timing of antiretroviral therapy(ART)initiation in these patients remains controversial.This study aims to investigate the differences in outcomes of ART initiation at different times,in order to help clarify the treatment timing of AIDS-associated TE.Methods:This multicenter prospective observational study included 87 patients recruited from 11 research centers in China(from March 2019 to December 2022).Of the patients,38 were assigned to the early ART group(initiating ART within 2 weeks after anti-Toxoplasma treatment initiation),and the remaining 49 patients received deferred ART(initiating ART at least 2 weeks after anti-Toxoplasma treatment initiation).The main outcomes includedmortality and emergence of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome(IRIS).Human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-1 viral load and CD4^(+)T-cell counts at weeks 24 and 48 were observed.Results:The number of deaths(1 vs.5,P=0.225)and incidence of IRIS(2.6%vs.0,P=0.437)were not significantly different between the early and deferred ART groups at week 48.Early ART initiation did not contribute significantly to HIV-1 viral load control(<50 copies/mL,n=8 vs.n=3 at week 24,P=0.142;n=7 vs.n=7 atweek 48,P=1.000).The median CD4^(+)T-cell counts between the two groups were not significantly different,either at week 24(155 vs.91 cells/mm^(3),P=0.837)or atweek 48(181 vs.146 cells/mm^(3),P=0.219).Conclusion:In patients with AIDS-associated TE,early ART initiation was not significantly different from deferred ART initiation in terms of incidence of mortality,IRIS,and HIV virological and immunological outcomes.Trial registration:This study was registered(registration number:ChiCTR1900021195)as one of 12 clinical trials under the title of a general project at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry(chictr.gov)on February 1,2019.Enrollment for this study began inMarch 2019.
