Dear Editor,It is known that most of lives on the earth compose of homochiral molecules of L-amino acids and D-ribose nucleic acids.However,little is known why and how the life's chirality in such a way.Studies on an artificial mirror-image life could strengthen our understanding of the question about the origin of life on the Earth and even elsewhere in the universe.Especially studies on mirror-image life would also have a plenty of vast application prospects in materials,energy and pharmaceutical sciences(Bohannon,2010).

Studies on the integration of cross-modal information with taste perception has been mostly limited to uni-modal level.The cross-modal sensory interaction and the neural network of information processing and its control were not fully explored and the mechanisms remain poorly understood.This mini review investigated the impact of uni-modal and multi-modal information on the taste perception,from the perspective of cognitive status,such as emotion,expectation and attention,and discussed the hypothesis that the cognitive status is the key step for visual sense to exert influence on taste.This work may help researchers better understand the mechanism of cross-modal information processing and further develop neutrally-based artificial intelligent(AI)system.

Meningiomas are common tumors of the central nervous system,[1,2]and surgery is an effective treatment for meningiomas.Postoperative pneumonia(POP)is one of the common complications after meningioma resection.Even with the improvement of surgical techniques and postoperative care,the incidence of POP has still not been significantly improved.Exploring new predictive indicators can help to screen high-risk POP patients,intervene early,and improve patient prognosis.

In this work, the mechanical properties and microstructures of vermicular graphite cast iron processed by selective laser surface alloying with ultra-fine ZrO2 ceramic particulates were investigated. A particulate-reinforced metal matrix composite coating with the thickness of -650 μm was fabricated by laser treatment on the sample surface. The particulates were uniformly distributed in the microstructure of the coating. The tensile strength and microhardness both increased with the particulate fraction, since more tensile load was transferred from the matrix to the reinforcement showing essential strengthening effect. The composite coating also sharply reduced the wear mass loss and thus improved the wear resistance.

Background:After the scale-up of antiretroviral therapy(ART)for HIV infected people,increasing numbers of patients have pretreatment drug resistance(PDR).In this study,the prevalence of PDR was evaluated in adults initiating antiretroviral therapy in China.Methods:Blood samples were obtained from 1943 patients who initiated antiretroviral therapy(ART)in 2017 from 13 provinces or cities in China.Pol sequences were used to analyze drug resistance and construct transmission networks.Logistic regression model was used to estimate the potential factors associated with PDR.Results:In total,1711 eligible patients(76.0%male;87.8%aged≥25 years)were included,of which 117(6.8%)had PDR.The highest rates of PDR were 12.2%in liangshan Prefecture of Sichuan and 9.3 and 8.9%in Dehong and lincang Prefecture of Yunnan.A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that PDR was significantly higher among intravenous drug users(adjusted Odds Ratio(aOR)=2.64,95%CI:1.57–4.44)and individuals from liangshan,Dehong,and lincang(aOR=2.04,95%CI:1.26–3.30).In total,754 sequences were used to generate 164 transmission networks.Five transmission networks had two or three sequences containing the same mutations,two networks contained subjects from liangshan,and one network contained subjects from Dehong.Conclusions:Overall,the PDR prevalence was moderate,with a particularly high prevalence in areas with severe HIV epidemics.These results indicate the importance of continuous PDR monitoring in patients initiating antiretroviral therapy.

Pasteurella multocida is a leading cause of respiratory disorders in pigs.This study was designed to understand the genotypical and antimicrobial resistant characteristics of P.multocida from pigs in China.To achieve this,we briefly investigated 158 P.multocida isolates from pigs with respiratory disorders in China between 2019 and 2020.Genotyping through multiplex PCR assays assigned these 158 isolates into capsular genotypes A(60.13%,95/158),D(35.44%,56/158),F(4.43%,7/158),and/or lipopolysaccharide(LPS)genotypes L3(28.48%,45/158)and L6(66.46%,105/158).In addition,eight isolates(5.06%,8/158)were found to be nontypable using the LPS genotyping method.When combining the capsular genotypes and the LPS genotypes,D:L6(34.81%,55/158)and A:L6(31.65%,50/158)were the predominant genotypes,followed by A:L3(24.05%,38/158).PCR detection of virulence factor-encoding genes showed that over 80%of the isolates were positive for exbB,tonB,exbD,ompH,ptfA,fimA,sodA,sodC,fur,ompA,oma87,plpB,hsf-2,nanH and hgbB,suggesting the presence of these genes were broad characteristics of P.multocida.We also found approximately 63.92%(101/158),51.27%(81/158),8.86%(14/158),7.59%(12/158),3.16%(5/158),0.63%(1/158),and 0.63%(1/158)of the isolates grew well in media with the presence of colistin(4μg/mL),tetracycline(16μg/mL),tigecycline(1μg/mL),ampicillin(32μg/mL),chloramphenicol(32μg/mL),cefepime(16μg/mL),and ciprofloxacin(1μg/mL),respectively.This study contributes to the understanding of genotypes and antimicrobial resistance profile of P.multocida currently circulation in pigs of China.

In traditional vulnerability assessments,a synthetic index method is usually used to select all types of social and economic indexes so that more aspects can be covered;however,the requisite social and economic data are not always available or are not highly relevant to the studied geographical space,which makes it difficult to conduct quantitative calculations.In this paper,a spatial value density assessment method was developed to improve the hazard of place model.First,a three-dimensional(3D)model of a coastal city was obtained using oblique airborne photogrammetry and image-based 3D reconstruction and then,architecture footprints were employed to extract the geometric information of each individual building.Additionally,a vulnerability assessment system was established to quantitatively account for the aggregate economic value of a selected set of urban surface features.Using geographic information system(GIS)techniques,the aggregate value of these urban features within each geographic unit can be accurately calculated to quantify the exposure and vulnerability of coastal cities to storm surge.A vulnerability assessment was conducted using Weihai city as an example.The study shows that vulnerability assessment accuracy was greatly improved by downscaling the assessment granularity from county-level administrative districts to a 1-km grid.

Sinomenine(SIN)is commonly used as part of rheumatoid arthritis(RA)therapy in China,but there is still no published evidence of the efficacy of SIN monotherapy.This work investigates the efficacy and safety of SIN in treating RA patients and analyzes the correlation between ornithine level and the alleviation of disease activity in RA patients.In this 24 week,randomized,placebo-controlled,double-blind clinical trial,people with mild to moderate RA were randomly assigned(1:1:1,stratified by hospital)to receive SIN(120 mg,twice daily),methotrexate(MTX)(10 mg per week),or SIN+MTX therapy.The primary outcome was the proportion of patients who achieved a 50%improvement in the American College of Rheumatology(ACR50)criteria at week 24 and who showed improvement according to the clinical disease activity index(CDAI).In this prospective subgroup analysis,we also assessed whether the 24-week alterations of disease activity in the treatment group were significantly correlated to the levels of blood ornithine.Of the 135 enrolled participants,38,39,and 36 patients were treated with SIN,MTX,and SIN+MTX,respectively.In the SIN-treated group,52.63%of patients achieved ACR50 after 24-weeks of treatment,which was comparable to the results in the MTX-treated and SIN+MTX-treated groups.Hepatic and gastrointestinal disorders were the main adverse events;however,the ratio of patients suffering from hepatic disorder in the SIN group(1/38)was much lower than that in the MTX(10/39)and SIN+MTX(8/36)groups.A total of 221 serum samples were collected at the four follow-up time points in the three treatments,and the levels of ornithine,citrulline,and arginine were obtained through ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS).The serum ornithine level decreased after the 24-week treatment along with a decrease in disease activity,and may reflect therapeutic responses with a sensitivity value of 80%.In conclusion,SIN revealed a comparable efficacy to MTX for treating RA patients,but w
