Aim:To investigate the long-term effect of soybean isoflavones on changes inparvalbumin (PV) immunoreactivity in the hippocampus in normal female,ovariec-tomized (OVX) female and normal male ***:Ten-month-old rats wereassigned to one of 9 groups (n=7 in each group) based on body weight using arandomized complete-block *** groups were:control diet-treated females,OVX females,and males;0.3g/kg isoflavone-treated females,OVX females,andmales;and 1.2g/kg isoflavone-treated females,OVX females,and *** PVimmunostaining was conducted by using the standard avidin-biotin ***:PV immunoreactivity and the number of PV-immunoreactiveneurons in all the groups after isoflavone treatment were significantly changed inthe hippocampal CA1 region and in the dentate gyrus,but not in the hippocampalCA2/3 *** immunoreactivity and the number of PV-immunoreactive neu-rons in the control diet OVX females were similar to those in the control diet,andwere greater than those in the control diet normal *** immunoreactivityand the number of PV-immunoreactive neurons in all the isoflavone-treated groupsdecreased dose-dependently after isoflavone ***:Long-termadministration of isoflavones may induce a reduction of PV in interneurons in thehippocampal CA1 region and in the dentate *** reduction of PV in theseregions suggests that the long-term administration of isoflavones may cause achange in calcium homeostasis in the hippocampal CA1 region and in the dentategyrus.

AIM: Taraxacum officinale (TO) has been frequently used as a remedy for inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of TO on cholecystokinin (CCK)-octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis in ***: TO at 10 mg/kg was orally administered, followed by 75 μg/kg CCK octapeptide injected subcutaneously three times after 1, 3 and 5 h. This whole procedure was repeated for 5 d. We determined the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio, the levels of pancreatic HSP60 and HSP72, and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Repeated CCK octapeptide treatment resulted in typical laboratory and morphological changes of experimentally-induced ***: TO significantly decreased the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio in CCK octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis. TO also increased the pancreatic levels of HSP60 and HSP72. Additionally, the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α decreased in the animals treated with ***: TO may have a protective effect against CCK octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis.

Postoperative changes of manometry after restorative proctocolectomy in Korean ulcerative colitis patients

To investigate the changes of postoperative anal sphincter function and bowel frequency in Korean patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODSA total of 127 patients with UC who underwent restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) during 20 years were retrospectively analyzed. The parameters of anal manometry and bowel frequency were compared according to the 6-mo intervals until 24 mo postoperatively. Manometry was used to measure the maximal squeezing pressure (MSP) and maximal resting pressure (MRP). RESULTSMSP decreased after surgery until 6 mo (157 to 142 mmHg); thereafter, it improved and was recovered to and maintained at the preoperative value at 12 mo postoperatively (142-170 mmHg, P < 0.001). Although the decreased MRP (65 to 56 mmHg) improved after 18 mo (62 mmHg), it did not completely recover to the preoperative value. The decreased rectal capacity after surgery (90 to 82 mL) gradually increased up to 150 mL at 24 mo. Although bowel frequency showed significant gradual decreases at each interval, it was stabilized after 12 mo postoperatively (6.5 times/d). CONCLUSIONPostoperative changes of manometry and bowel frequency after restorative proctocolectomy in Korean patients with UC were not different from those in Western patients with UC.

Oxycodone hydrochloride is a semi-synthetic opioid agonist that provides very effective relief for moderate to severe pain in cancer and post-operative patients. Controlled release oxycodone formulations have been studied to enhance the therapeutic effect by providing constant release over the whole dosing interval and improve patient’s convenience by reducing the frequency of administration as well.
