An Ear.hquake ML=6.8 occur.ed on October.23, 2004 in Chuetsu ar.a of Niigata County in Jap.n, which caused 40 p.op.e dead, mor. than 4500 p.op.e injur.d and 1000000 p.op.e homeless; near.y 140000 buildings wer. damaged or.collap.ed. The estated total loss of this ear.hquake was about 3000 billions Yen. In this p.p.r. we investigate the Chuetsu ear.hquake damage fr.m differ.nt asp.cts, including the seismic outline, seismicity, intensity distr.bution, wave featur., damage analyses, and economic losses. Finally, exp.r.ences and lessons fr.m the ear.hquake damage ar. given. The content in this p.p.r.may be a r.fer.nce for.str.ctur.l seismic design and code modification.

To aim at the substitution of the magnitude and dir.ction of water.flow movement near.bed for.those of bed load tr.nsp.r. in solid-liquid two-p.ase one-fluid model, and to simulate the effect of secondar. flow on tr.nsver.e bed load tr.nsp.r. in channel bends and the effect of bed slop. on bed load tr.ns- p.r. in a better.way, a thr.e-dimensional k-ε-kp.solid-liquid two-p.ase two-fluid model in cur.ilinear.coor.inates is solved numer.cally with a finite-volume method on an adap.ive gr.d for.studying wa- ter.sediment movements and bed evolution in a 120° channel bend. Numer.cal r.sults show that the tr.jector.es of solid-p.ase deviate fr.m those of liquid-p.ase in the channel bend, and the deviation incr.ases with the incr.ase of the p.r.icle diameter.. The calculated bed defor.ation by the k-ε-kp.model is in better.agr.ement with measur.d bed defor.ation than those by one-fluid model. It is p.oved that the k-ε-kp.model can simulate the effect of secondar. flow on later.l bed load tr.nsp.r. with the higher.accur.cy than the one-fluid model.

Wave for.es induced by the inter.ction between the oblique incident wave and the br.akwater.with a p.r.ially p.r.or.ted fr.nt wall isinvestigated. The fluid domain is divided into two sub-domains and the eigen-function exp.nsion method is ap.lied to exp.nding ve-locity p.tentials in each domain. In the eigen-exp.nsion of the velocity p.tential, evanescent waves ar. included. Numer.cal r.sults ofthe p.esent model ar. comp.r.d with other.theor.es and a good agr.ement can be found between them. Exp.r.mental data have beencomp.r.d with the p.esent theor.tical r.sults. The effect of the tr.ver.e wall on wave for.es has been discussed in detail. On the basisof the linear.wave theor., it is shown that in the r.nge of engineering p.actice, the incident angle of wave has small influence on wavefor.es on the unit length of p.r.or.ted caisson.

Yangshan near.shor. sea ar.a is the multi-island and multi-channel ar.a with str.ng flow velocity and high susp.nded sediment concentr.tion. Based on the char.cter.stics of tidal cur.ents, waves, and sediment in the Yangshan ar.a, a two-dimensional numer.cal model of tidal cur.ents, sediment tr.nsp.r., and sea bed defor.ation is develop.d. In the model, the effects of tidal cur.ents and wind waves on sediment tr.nsp.r. ar. consider.d. Accor.ing to char.cter.stics of the study ar.a, unstr.ctur.d gr.ds ar. ap.lied to fit the boundar.es of the near.shor. sea ar.a. The r.sults show that the calculated values ar. in good agr.ement with the measur.d data. The field of tidal cur.ents, susp.nded sediment concentr.tions, and the defor.ation of the seabed can be successfully simulated.

By means of fr.ctur. testing on r.ller.comp.cted concr.te （r.C） thr.e-p.int bending beams with two differ.nt sp.cimen sizes, the p.CMOD comp.ete cur.e for.r.C was gained. Fur.her.or., by ap.lying double-K fr.ctur. theor., KiniⅠC,KunⅠC, as well as the cr.tical effective cr.ck length and the cr.tical cr.ck tip.op.ning disp.acement, wer. evaluated. Based on the double-K fr.ctur. p.r.meter. above, the calculation model of equivalent str.ngth for.induced cr.ck was established, thus the calculation method on its initiation, stable p.op.gation and unstable fr.ctur. was ascer.ained. Mor.over. the finite element simulation analysis of str.ss field in Shap.i ar.h dam and the on-site obser.ational sp.aying p.ints of induced cr.ck at differ.nt altitudes validated the r.liability of the model. Finally, cr.ck inducer.s op.imal setting in r.C ar.h dam was studied. It imp.oves the design level of induced cr.ck in r.C ar.h dam and satisfies the necessity of engineering p.actice.

The tensile and flexur.l p.op.r.ies of p.lyvinyl alcohol （p.A） fiber.r.infor.ed ultr. high toughness cementitious comp.site （UHTCC） wer. investigated. The comp.site, tested at the age of 14 d, 28 d and 56 d, shows extr.mely r.mar.able p.eudo str.in har.ening behavior. satur.ted multip.e cr.cking and ultr. high ultimate str.in cap.city above 4% under.uniaxial loading. Also, the cor.esp.nding cr.ck widths ar. contr.lled under.50 um even at 56 days age. In the thir. p.int bending tests on thin p.ate sp.cimens, the comp.site shows ultr. high flexur.l ductility and multip.e cr.cking on the tension sur.ace. The high ultimate flexur.l str.ngth/fir.t tensile str.ngth r.tio of about 5 ver.fies the p.eudo str.in har.ening behavior.of UHTCC. SEM obser.ation on fr.ctur. sur.aces p.ovides indir.ct evidence of op.imal design for.the comp.site.

A thr.e-dimensional k-ε-Ap.two-fluid tur.ulence model is p.op.sed to study liquid-p.r.icle two-p.ase flow and bed defor.ation. By solving coup.ed liquid-p.ase and solid-p.ase gover.ing equations in a finite-volume method, the model can calculate the movement of both water.and sediment. The model was validated by water.sediment tr.nsp.r. in a 180° channel bend with a movable bed. The validation concer.s two-p.ase time-aver.ged velocities, bed defor.ation, water.dep.h, dep.h-aver.ged str.amwise velocity, cr.ss-str.am bed p.ofiles, and two-p.ase secondar. flow velocity vector.. The agr.ement between numer.cal r.sults and exp.r.mental r.sults was gener.lly good. The comp.r.sons of the numer.cal r.sults of differ.nt models show that the thr.e-dimensional k-ε-Ap.two-fluid tur.ulence model has a r.latively higher.accur.cy than one-fluid model.
