Diamond/Cu-Sn-Ti composites have been successfully prepared by cold-press forming in conjunction with high-temperature vacuum active brazing at 1223 K.Ensuing wetting behaviors between diamond and filler metal,interfacial characteristics of the reaction layer,and wear resistance of the bulky composite have been fully investigated.It is revealed that all diamond particles can only be fully coated when the TiH_(2)content exceeds 5 wt%,below which sharp edges on diamond can still be observed.The interfacial reaction layer is found to be composed of TiC,the thickness of which is demonstrated to increase as a function of TiH_(2)content,arriving at the peak value of 1.70μm and remaining almost constant afterwards.It is further shown that the maximum wear resistance occurs approaching 5 wt%TiH_(2)content.Potential mechanisms responsible for such interesting phenomena have been postulated.

Smart biomaterials,featuring not only bioactivity,but also dynamic responsiveness to external stimuli,are desired for biomedical applications,such as regenerative medicine,and hold great potential to expand the boundaries of the modern clinical practice.Herein,a magnetically responsive three-dimensional scaffold with sandwich structure is developed by using hydroxyapatite(HA)nanowires and ferrosoferric oxide(Fe_(3)O_(4))nanoparticles as building blocks.The magnetic HA/Fe_(3)O_(4) scaffold is fully inorganic in nature,but shows polymeric hydrogel-like characteristics including a 3D fibrous network that is highly porous(>99.7%free volume),deformable(50%deformation)and elastic,and tunable stiffness.The magnetic HA/Fe3O4 scaffold has been shown to execute multimodal motion upon exposure to an external magnetic field including shape transformation,rolling and somersault.In addition,we have demonstrated that the magnetic scaffold can serve as a smart carrier for remotely controlled,on-demand delivery of compounds including an organic dye and a protein.Finally,the magnetic scaffold has exhibited good biocompatibility,supporting the attachment and proliferation of human mesenchymal stromal cells,thereby showing great potential as smart biomaterials for a variety of biomedical applications.

With the consumption of terrestrial metal resources,the exploitation of deep-sea polymetallic nodule minerals has been widely concerned around the world.Therefore,the environmental impact of deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining cannot be ignored.However,duo to the lacks in stable and safe deep-sea(the depth>1000 m)vertical profile observation systems and consequently in long-term in-situ observation data,the sound speed and dissolved oxygen and the other water environment factors in the deposition areas of polymetallic nodules remains poorly understood.In this study,a deep-sea in-situ observation system was designed and deployed,and the water environment data of the polymetallic nodule deposition area were collected and analyzed.Result shows that the dissolved oxygen in the depth of 0–600 m was mainly affected by biological factors,while that in the area deeper than 600 m was affected by physical factors.The sound speed in the water body was mainly affected by temperature and pressure.At depths below 840 m,the sound speed is mainly controlled by temperature,and at depths between 840 m and 5700 m,the sound speed is mainly controlled by pressure.The correlations of sound speed vs.pressure and vs.temperature were regressed into equation.The resuspension of sediments rich in various metals may result in the reduction of dissolved oxygen and the improvement of redox potential.This environmental impact caused by a single sediment resuspension could last for 24 h or more.These findings enrich the understanding of the background value of the water environment in the polymetallic nodule deposition area.

Volcanic oil and gas reservoirs are generally buried deep,which leads to a high whole-well coring cost,and the degree of development and size of reservoirs are controlled by volcanic facies.Therefore,accurately identifying volcanic facies by logging curves not only provides the basis of volcanic reservoir prediction but also saves costs during exploration.The Songliao Basin is a‘fault-depression superimposed’composite basin with a typical binary filling structure.Abundant types of volcanic lithologies and facies are present in the lishu fault depression.Volcanic activity is frequent during the sedimentary period of the Huoshiling Formation.Through systematic petrographic identification of the key exploratory well(SN165C)of the lishu fault-depression,which is a whole-well core,it is found that the Huoshiling Formation in SN165C contains four facies and six subfacies,including the volcanic conduit facies(crypto explosive breccia subfacies),explosive facies(pyroclastic flow and thermal wave base subfacies),effusive facies(upper and lower subfacies),and volcanogenic sedimentary facies(pyroclastic sedimentary subfacies).Combining core,thin section,and logging data,the authors established identification markers and petrographic chart logging phases,and also interpreted the longitudinal variation in volcanic petro-graphic response characteristics to make the charts more applicable to this area's volcanic petrographic interpretation of the Huoshiling Formation.These charts can provide a basis for the further exploration and development of volcanic oil and gas in this area.

This article is to review results from scientific drilling and fault-zone trapped waves （FZTWs） at the south Longman-Shan fault （LSF） zone that ruptured in the 2008 May 12 M8 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan,China.Immediately after the mainshock,two Wenchuan Fault Scientific Drilling （WFSD） boreholes were drilled at WFSD-1 and WFSD-2 sites approximately 400 m and 1 km west of the surface rupture along the Yinxiu-Beichuan fault （YBF）,the middle fault strand of the south LSF zone.Two boreholes met the principal slip of Wenchuan earthquake along the YBF at depths of 589-m and 1230-m,respectively.The slip is accompanied with a 100-200-m-wide zone consisting of fault gouge,breccia,cataclasite and fractures.Close to WFSD-1 site,the nearly-vertical slip of ～4.3-m with a 190-m wide zone of highly fractured rocks restricted to the hanging wall of the YBF was found at the ground surface after the Wenchuan earthquake.A dense linear seismic array was deployed across the surface rupture at this venue to record FZTWs generated by aftershocks.Observations and 3-D finite-difference simulations of FZTWs recorded at this cross-fault array and network stations close to the YBF show a distinct low-velocity zone composed by severely damaged rocks along the south LSF at seismogenic depths.The zone is several hundred meters wide along the principal slip,within which seismic velocities are reduced by ～30-55％ from wall-rock velocities and with the maximum velocity reduction in the ～200-m-wide rupture core zone at shallow depth.The FZTW-inferred geometry and physical properties of the south LSF rupture zone at shallow depth are in general consistent with the results from petrological and structural analyses of cores and well log at WFSD boreholes.We interpret this remarkable low-velocity zone as being a break-down zone during dynamic rupture in the 2008 M8 earthquake.We examined the FZTWS generated by similar earthquakes before and after the 2008 mainshock and observed that seismic velocities within fault core zone was reduced by ～10％ due t

DADOS:A Cloud-based Data-driven Design Optimization System

This paper presents a cloud-based data-driven design optimization system,named DADOS,to help engineers and researchers improve a design or product easily and efficiently.DADOS has nearly 30 key algorithms,including the design of experiments,surrogate models,model validation and selection,prediction,optimization,and sensitivity analysis.Moreover,it also includes an exclusive ensemble surrogate modeling technique,the extended hybrid adaptive function,which can make use of the advantages of each surrogate and eliminate the effort of selecting the appropriate individual surrogate.To improve ease of use,DADOS provides a user-friendly graphical user interface and employed flow-based programming so that users can conduct design optimization just by dragging,dropping,and connecting algorithm blocks into a workflow instead of writing massive code.In addition,DADOS allows users to visualize the results to gain more insights into the design problems,allows multi-person collaborating on a project at the same time,and supports multi-disciplinary optimization.This paper also details the architecture and the user interface of DADOS.Two examples were employed to demonstrate how to use DADOS to conduct data-driven design optimization.Since DADOS is a cloud-based system,anyone can access DADOS at *** using their web browser without the need for installation or powerful hardware.

Mantis Shrimp-Inspired Underwater Striking Device Generates Cavitation

Different from direct impact damage exerted by limbs of most organisms,mantis shrimps’appendages can carry out ultra-fast,powerful underwater strikes with cavitation superimposed damage to harvest hard-shelled prey.The power amplification systems and cavitation generation of mantis shrimp have attracted vast attention of researchers.Much effort has been paid to developing mantis shrimp-inspired striking robots;however,none of them are capable of generating cavitation during impacting hard objects yet.In this paper,an underwater striking robot named Shrimpbot was developed to reproduce the cavitation phenomenon when striking hard objects.Shrimpbot incorporates a Latch-Mediated Spring Actuation(LaMSA)to slowly store energy and release it instantaneously.A Diamond-Shaped Four-bar linkage(DSFL)stretches springs to more effectively store elastic energy by reducing the maximum torque requirement of the motor.This design promised an average power amplification of over 30 times of the motor.Shape optimization and hydrophobic coating on the hammerhead and hand of Shrimpbot helped to reduce the water drag.The accomplished Shrimpbot reached an impact speed of over 12 m/s,at an acceleration of 2×10^(3) m/s^(2),an impact force of more than 1200 N in water,very close to the performance of mantis shrimp.More importantly,cavitation bubbles accompanied with the impacts were observed for the first time in mantis shrimp-inspired robots.Shrimpbot ingeniously employs only one motor to accomplish the striking automatically and repeatedly for practical purposes.Shrimpbot mimics the cavitation generation skills of mantis shrimp,which could facilitate the understanding of its mechanical principles and fluid dynamics of ultra-fast power-amplified systems of mantis shrimp and even those energy storage mechanisms of jumping robots or exoskeleton robots.

Dynamic Modeling and Eigenvalue Evaluation of a 3-DOF PKM Module

Due to the structural complexity, the dynamic modeling and quick performance evaluation for the parallel kinematic machines （PKMs） are still to be remained as two challenges in the stage of conceptual design. By using the finite element method and substructure synthesis, this paper mainly deals with the dynamic modeling and eigenvalue evaluation of a novel 3-DOF spindle head named the A3 head. The topological architecture behind the proposed A3 head is a 3-RPS parallel mechanism, which possesses one translational and two rotational capabilities. The mechanical features of the A3 head are briefly addressed in the first place followed by inverse position analysis. In the dynamic modeling, the platform is treated as a rigid body, the RPS limbs as the continuous uniform beams and the joints as lumped virtual springs. With the combination of substructure synthesis and finite element method, an analytical approach is then proposed to formulate the governing equations of motion of system using the compatibility conditions at interface between the limbs and the platform. Consequently, by solving the eigenvalue problem of the governing equations of motion, the distribution of lower natural frequencies of the A3 head throughout the entire workspace can be predicted in a quick manner. Modal analysis for the A3 head reveals that the distributions of lower natural frequencies are strongly related to the mechanism configuration and are axially symmetric due to system kinematic and structural features. The sensitivity analysis of the system indicates that the dimensional parameters of the 3-RPS mechanism have a slight effect on system lower natural frequencies while the joint compliances affect the distributions of lower natural frequencies significantly. The proposed dynamic modeling method can also be applied to other PKMs and can effectively evaluate the PKM＇s dynamic performance throughout the entire workspace.
