The aim of this study was to explore the role of autophagy in response to blue light damage in aged mice and in human retinal pigmented epithelium(hRPE) cells. Blue light damage to the retina was induced in 10-month-old(10 mo) C57 mice and hRPE cells. Flash electroretinography was used to assess retinal function. Retinal structure changes were observed by electron microscopy. Western blot was conducted to determine the expression levels of the following proteins: cleaved caspase-3, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases, protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase(PERK), autophagy marker light chain 3(LC3), P62, and Beclin-1. On day 1 after light damage to the 10 mo mice, retinal function was changed. The latent periods of awave and b-wave were delayed, and amplitude was reduced. The electron microscopy results revealed mitochondria damage in the retinal pigmented epithelium and a disorganized photoreceptor outer segment(OS). PERK, LC3, and Beclin-1 were upregulated, whereas P62 was not. On day 5 after the blue light damage, restoration of electroretinography and OS was ***, LC3, and Beclin-1 were downregulated, whereas P62 was not. Protein changes in vitro were consistent with in vivo. The present study provided structural and functional evidence that autophagy plays an important role in the response to blue lightinduced retinal damage.

Denitrification Rate and Controlling Factors for Accumulated Nitrate in the Deep Subsoil of Intensive Farmlands: A Case Study in the North China Plain

Denitrification in subsoil(to a depth of 12 m) is an important mechanism to reduce nitrate(NO3^-) leaching into ***, regulating mechanisms of subsoil denitrification, especially those in the deep subsoil beneath the crop root zone, have not been well documented. In this study, soil columns of 0–12 m depth were collected from intensively farmed fields in the North China Plain. The fields had received long-term nitrogen(N) fertilizer inputs at 0(N0), 200(N200) and 600(N600) kg N ha^-1 year^-1. Main soil properties related to denitrification, i.e., soil water content, NO3^-, dissolved organic carbon(DOC), soil organic carbon(SOC),pH, denitrifying enzyme activity(DEA), and anaerobic denitrification rate(ADR), were determined. Statistical comparisons among the treatments were performed. The results showed that NO3^- was more heavily accumulated in the entire soil profile of the N600 treatment, compared to the N0 and N200 treatments. The SOC, DOC, and ADR decreased with increasing soil depth in all treatments,whereas considerable DEA was observed throughout the subsoil. The long-term fertilizer rates affected ADR only in the upper 4 m soil layers. The ADRs in the N200 and N600 treatments were significantly correlated with DOC. Multiple regression analysis indicated that DOC rather than DEA was the key factor regulating denitrification beneath the root zone. Additional research is required to determine if carbon addition into subsoil can be a promising approach to enhance NO3^- denitrification in the subsoil and consequently to mitigate groundwater NO3^- contamination in the intensive farmlands.

Since the end of 2019, novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Wuhan,China and rapidly spread. The pathogen of COVID-19 is novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), which is virified to be highly homologous with severe acute respiratory?syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003, and whether the eye surface infectious is associated with the respiratory disease has attracted the attention of researchers. Up to now, the virulence, transmmision way, and infectivity of 2019-nCoV have been understood, but the invasion mode and pathogenesis is under elucidated. The management of infactious source, cutting out of transmmision route and treatment of patients are the primary goal for prevention and control of COVID-19 *** is very important for ophthalmologists to effectively treat the eye diseases and at the same time to pay close attention for medical environment disinfection and personal pretection during the pandemic. In view of the urgent need of ophthalmologists for the proventional precedure, we publish the ‘Ophthalmic Management and Protective Procedure Under the COVID-19 Epidemic’ by li xiaoxin et al from Xiamen Eye Center and ‘ Strengthening Prevention and Control Measures of Medical Staffs in Ophthalmic Hospital Under the COVID-19 Epidemic’by Zhang Mingzhi et al from Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong as the references for ophthalmologists.

This study was designed to explore the prevalence of fibrovascular proliferation not regressed in zone Ⅱ stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)after initial intravitreal ranibizumab(IVR)injections and to explore the possible influence ***-seven patients(108 eyes)with ROP who underwent intravitreal injection of ranibizumab between January 2013 and July 2014 participated in the retrospective *** on regress of fibrovascular tissue or not after initial injections of ranibizumab,eligible eyes were divided into two *** was collected and analyzed with SPSS *** the study,108 eyes of 57 patients(18 females,39 males)underwent initial intravitreal *** mean birth weight was 1,440.0±357.7 g and the mean gestational age was 30.5±2.0 *** of 57(14.0%)patients showed unfavorable fibrovascular proliferation after initial ranibizumab treatment within 2 *** them,11 eyes were controlled by further laser treatment and 3 eyes underwent *** difference of occurrence rate in hemorrhage between the two groups was significant(Pliferation was relatively high,and intraocular hemorrhage was possibly associated with the progress in zone Ⅱ stage 3 ROP after initial IVR injection.
