Removal of arsenic by pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetland

Four pilot-scale Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands(VFCWs)filled with gravel and planted with Phragmites australis were operated for seven months in the field to study the efficiency of arsenic removal in contaminated wastewater.The average arsenic removal efficiency by the VFCWs was 52.0%±20.2%,52.9%±21.3%,and 40.3%±19.4%at the theoretical concentrations of 50µg/L(CW50),100µg/L(CW100),and 500µg/L(CW500)arsenic in the wastewater,respectively.The results also showed no significant differences in the removal efficiency for conventional contaminants(nitrogen,phosphorus,or chemical oxygen demand)between wastewater treatments that did or did not contain arsenic(P>0.05),except for phosphorus in CW500.The highest average monthly removal rate of arsenic occurred in August(55.9%–74.5%)and the lowest in November(7.8%–15.5%).The arsenic removal efficiency of each VFCW was positively correlated with temperature(P<0.05).Arsenic accumulated in both substrates and plants,with greater accumulation associated with increased arsenic concentrations in the influent.The maximum accumulated arsenic concentrations in the substrates and plants at the end of the experiment were 4.47 mg/kg and 281.9 mg/kg,respectively,both present in CW500.The translocation factor(TF)of arsenic in the reeds was less than 1,with most of the arsenic accumulating in the roots.The arsenic mass balance indicated that substrate accumulation contributed most to arsenic removal(19.9%–30.4%),with lower levels in plants(3.8%–9.5%).In summary,VFCWs are effective for the treatment of arsenic-containing wastewater.

Chirality is a fascinating and essential feature of life and highly associated with many significant pharmaceutical,chemical,and biological processes.The construction of chiral recognition platform is a hot research topic and challenging assignment.Herein,we report an electrochemical method by diffe rential pulse voltammetry(DPV) for the enantioselective recognition of chiral drug propranolol(R/SPPL) through a nanochannel platform based on the N-acetyl-L-cysteine functionalized pillar[5]arenes derivative NALC-P5 and the porous polycarbonate membrane.The chiral discrimination depends on the diffe rence in the supramolecular host-guest interaction between the chiral NALC-P5 and the R/S-PPL.The transmission rate of the R/S-PPL can be regulated in the nanochannel and we can achieve the selective transport of the chiral drugs.This simple electrochemical technique has potential applications as a general platform for the recognition of chiral molecules.

Monteggia equivalent lesion in children:a narrative review

Background Monteggia equivalent lesion represents a group of injury or combined injury patterns that resemble the Monteggia lesion in its presentations and mechanisms.Unlike Monteggia lesions,the equivalent ones,which share vague definitions and mostly occur as sporadic single case reports in the literature,have not been thoroughly reviewed since Bado first proposed the term,especially in the pediatric population.The objective of this review was to elucidate the definition by elaborating on its clinical styles and thus analyzing the mechanism,diagnosis,and management through related literature.Data sources Based on the terms of‘Monteggia equivalent’,‘radial neck fracture’and‘pediatric’,all of the related literature was searched on the PubMed and Google Scholar search engine.Results The advance of the definitions for pediatric Monteggia equivalent lesion(PMEL)was reviewed.The functional roles of the ulnar and the related mechanism theories in this injury were analyzed.The status of the radiocapitellar joint in this injury was emphasized.According to the previous statements,a new classification model was proposed and proper diagnosis and treatment approaches were suggested.Conclusions PMEL should be defined as an ulnar fracture at any level combined with a proximal radial fracture.According to the status of the radiocapitellar joint,it could be divided into three groups.The occult ulnar bowing and delayed radial head dislocation should be a serious concern of orthopedists.Surgical need is usually warranted.Maintaining the ulnar length and securing the radiocapitellar joint are highly recommended.

Uplift of the Longmen Shan range and the Wenchuan earthquake

The 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Ms=8.0) struck on the Longmen Shan foreland thrust zone. The event took place within the context of long-term uplift of the Longmen Shan range as a result of the extensive eastward-extrusion of crustal materials from the Tibetan plateau against the rheologically strong crust of the Sichuan Basin. The Longmen Shan range is characterized by a Pre-Sinian crystalline complex constrained by the Maoxian-Wenchuan-Kangding ductile detachment at the western margin and the Yingxiu-Beichuan-Luding ductile thrust at the eastern margin. The Longmen Shan uplift was initiated by intracontinental subduction between the Songpan-Ganzi terrane and the Yangtze block during the Pre-Cenozoic. The uplift rate was increased considerably by the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates since ∼50 Ma. The Wenchuan earthquake resulted in two major NE-striking coseismic ruptures (i.e., the ∼275 km long Yingxiu-Beichuan-Qingchuan fault and the ∼ 100 km long Anxian-Guanxianfault). Field investigations combined with focal solutions and seismic reflection profiles suggest that the coseismic ruptures are steeply dipping close-to-pure reverse or right reverse oblique slip faults in the ∼ 15 km thick upper crust. These faults are unfavorably oriented for frictional slip in the horizontally compressional regime, so that they need a long recurrence interval to accumulate the tectonic stress and fluid pressure to critically high levels for the formation of strong earthquakes at a given locality. It is also found that all the large earthquakes (Ms>7.0) occurred in the fault zones across which the horizontal movement velocities measured by the GPS are markedly low (<3 mn/yr). The faults, which constitute the northeastern fronts of the enlarging Tibetan plateau against the strong Sichuan Basin, Ala Shan and Ordos blocks, are very destructive, although their average recurrence intervals are generally long.

Viral metagenomics analysis of feces from coronary heart disease patients reveals the genetic diversity of the Microviridae

Recent studies have declared that members of the ss DNA virus family Microviridae play an important role in multiple environments, as they have been found taking a dominant position in the human gut. The aim of this study was to analyze the overall composition of the gut virome in coronary heart disease(CHD) patients, and try to discover the potential link between the human gut virome and CHD. Viral metagenomics methods were performed to detect the viral sequences in fecal samples collected from CHD inpatients and healthy persons as controls. We present the analysis of the virome composition in these CHD patients and controls. Our data shows that the virome composition may be linked to daily living habits and the medical therapy of CHD.Virgaviridae and Microviridae were the two dominant types of viruses found in the enteric virome of CHD patients. Fourteen divergent viruses belonging to the family Microviridae were found, twelve of which were grouped into the subfamily Gokushovirinae, while the remaining two strains might represent two new subfamilies within Microviridae, according to the phylogenetic analysis. In addition, the genomic organization of these viruses has been characterized.

Evidence for UHP metamor-phism of eclogites from the Altun Mountains

Ultrahigh pressure (UHP) metamorphism refers to metamorphism that has occurred at pressures for the stability of coesite. The polycrystalline quartz inclusions showing the characteristic texture within garnets of eclogites indicates the pre-existence of coesites under the peak meta-morphic condition. The unusual exsolution textures in om-pacites and apatites, and the pressure estimations of phengite-bearing eclogites have been taken to provide further proof of eclogite formation under the UHP conditions. Combined with the fact that coesites have been observed in country rocks of eclogites in North Qaidam Mountains, another UHP metamorphic belt cut by the large-scale strike-slip fault in the Altun-North Qaidam area of China is confirmed.

目的分析机器人辅助二尖瓣置换术治疗二尖瓣病变的临床疗效及安全性。方法回顾性分析2020年7月至2023年2月在香港大学深圳医院接受手术治疗的60例二尖瓣病变患者的临床资料。其中接受机器人辅助二尖瓣置换术30例为观察组,传统正中开胸二尖瓣置换术30例为对照组,比较两组疗效结局指标、临床结局以及并发症发生情况。结果两组转机时间、主动脉开放后并行时间、呼吸机使用时间比较差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。观察组阻断时间、手术时间长于对照组,引流量、术中出血量少于对照组,创面愈合时间短于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P0.05)。观察组并发症总发生率为13.33%,对照组为10.00%,两组比较差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。结论二尖瓣病变经机器人辅助二尖瓣置换术治疗能够有效改善患者的疗效结局指标,安全性较好,值得推广。

An Arabidopsis ABC Transporter Mediates Phosphate Deficiency-Induced Remodeling of Root Architecture by Modulating Iron Homeostasis in Roots

The remodeling of root architecture is a major developmental response of plants to phosphate （Pi） deficiency and is thought to enhance a plant＇s ability to forage for the available Pi in topsoil. The underlying mechanism controlling this response, however, is poorly understood. In this study, we identified an Arabidopsis mutant, hps 10 （hypersensitive to Pi starvation 10）, which is morphologically normal under Pi sufficient condition but shows increased inhibition of primary root growth and enhanced production of lateral roots under Pi defi- ciency, hpslO is a previously identified allele （als3-3） of the ALUMINUM SENSITIVE3 （ALS3） gene, which is involved in plant tolerance to aluminum toxicity. Our results show that ALS3 and its interacting protein AtSTAR1 form an ABC transporter complex in the tonoplast. This protein complex mediates a highly electro- genic transport in Xenopus oocytes. Under Pi deficiency, als3 accumulates higher levels of Fe3＋ in its roots than the wild type does. In Arabidopsis, LPR1 （LOW PHOSPHATE ROOT1） and LPR2 encode ferroxidases, which when mutated, reduce Fe3＋ accumulation in roots and cause root growth to be insensitive to Pi defi- ciency. Here, we provide compelling evidence showing that ALS3 cooperates with LPR1/2 to regulate Pi deficiency-induced remodeling of root architecture by modulating Fe homeostasis in roots.

A CORRELATION EQUATION FOR CALCULATING INCliNED JET PENETRATION LENGTH IN A GAS-SOliD FLUIDIZED BED

Numerical simulation of gas-solid flow in a two-dimensional fluidized bed with an inclined jet was performed. The numerical model is based on the two-fluid model of gas and solids phase in which the solids constitutive equations are based on the kinetic theory of granular flow. The improved ICE algorithm, which can be used for both low and high-velocity fluid flow, were used to solve the model equations. The mechanism of jet formation was analyzed using both numerical simulations and experiments. The emergence and movement of gas bubbles were captured numerically and experimentally. The influences of jet velocity, nozzle diameter, nozzle inclination and jet position on jet penetration length were obtained. A semi-empirical expression was derived and the parameters were correlated from experimental data. The correlation equation, which can be easily used to obtain the inclined jet penetration length, was compared with our experimental data and published correlation equations.

Effect of Bauxite Aggregate on Properties of Al_2O_3-SiC-C Iron Trough Castables

A1203-SiC-C iron trough castables were prepared using high alumina bauxite clinker GL-90 （〉 1 mm ） or homogenized bauxite GL-88 to replace the traditional brown corundum aggregates （〉 1 mm ） to reduce the cost of iron trough castables. Effects of the two bauxite aggregates on properties of iron trough eastables were investigated. The results show that the two kinds of bauxite affect flowability, bulk density, strength and slag corrosion resistance of trough castables differently. Compared with homogenized bauxite, high alumina bauxite clinker is more suitable to substitute brown corundum. The castables prepared from the bauxite clinker have similar performances with those prepared from brown corundum, especially used in medium or small blast furnaces with weak thermal impact and lower temperature hot metal. However, in large blast furnaces with severe thermal impact and high temperature hot metal, the performances of the two castables are significantly different. So it is suggested to use the brown corundum based castables in the front gyral zone of the slag skimmer.
