Late Holocene paleoenvironmental changes in the southern Okinawa Trough inferred from a diatom record

We analyzed sediment diatoms from core MD05-2908 to infer climate and paleoenvironmental changes in the southern Okinawa Trough (SOT) over the past 1000 *** the study area is located in the East Asia monsoon area and beneath the main axis of Kuroshio Current,the climatic and hydrographical conditions are strongly influenced by both of these *** species used as environmental indicators,including the Kuroshio Current species (KC species) and freshwater species,were investigated in this *** in the abundance of the two groups of species revealed significant variations in water temperature and hydrography in the SOT during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the little Ice Age (liA).From 950-1500 AD,the abundance of the KC species increased fluctuantly,while the freshwater species decreased,showing that the influence of the Kuroshio Current was intensified at that interval and the precipitation of the study area was relatively *** KC species decreased remarkably and was maintained at a low abundance during the interval of 1500-1900 AD,which suggests that the impact of the Kuroshio Current on the SOT weakened during the period corresponding to the ***,the high abundance of the freshwater species at the same interval indicates a distinct increase in precipitation in northeastern Taiwan,which may be correlated to the south-detention of the rainfall belt in China caused by the southward migration of the western Pacific subtropical high.

Voluntary resignation of independent directors and auditor responses:Empirical evidence from Chinese A-share listed firms

We examine auditor responses to the voluntary resignation of independent *** show that auditors respond by increasing audit fees or rescinding engagement with their clients,but not by increasing their audit *** tests reveal that independent directors’voluntary resignation leads to increased regulatory sanctions and negative media coverage,these relationships are more pronounced after the New Securities *** response strategies follow an order of priority:at an acceptable level of perceived risk,auditors increase audit fees;when perceived risk exceeds this level,auditors will discontinue the client *** associate greater risk with firms that have(*** not)experienced consecutive voluntary resignations by independent *** resignation has no such effect.

Reconstruction of large complex sand-wave bathymetry with adaptive partitioning combining satellite imagery and sparse multi-beam data

Shallow marine sand waves are formed on the seabed and are widely distributed within tidal ***,the use of multibeam echo sounding(MBES)is costly to obtain the bathymetric mapping of large complex sand ***,we propose a new method that employs a combination of multiangle sun glint images and sparse MBES data to achieve comprehensive bathymetric mapping of large and complex sand *** method involves estimating sea surface roughness,automatically extracting sand-wave crests,conducting adaptive subregion partitioning,estimating the water depth at auxiliary points,and generating digital bathymetric *** method was employed in a case study of sand waves on the Taiwan *** mapping was implemented for large complex sand waves over an area spanning approximately 350 km~2 using multiangle sun glint images from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer and MBE S *** results show that mapped and measured water depths were well-matched;the root-mean-square error of water depths was 1.77 m,and the relative error was 5.03%.These findings show that bathymetric mapping of large complex sand waves can be effectively conducted using the new method,and as such,the workload of MBES is reduced and efficiency is improved.

Palaeo-sea-ice changes on the North Icelandic shelf during the last millennium:Evidence from diatom records

A high resolution record of sea-ice concentration on the North Icelandic shelf during the last millennium has been reconstructed using a diatom-based sea-ice transfer function. The reconstructed sea-ice record for the top of sediment core MD99–2275 exhibits a slightly increasing trend over the last 1000 years. Prior to AD 1300 sea-ice abundance was generally below the mean value, suggesting the strong influence of warm waters from the Irminger Current during the Medieval Warm Period. A marked increase of sea-ice concentration indicates an abrupt change to colder conditions after AD 1300, corresponding to the onset of the little Ice Age. The agreement between the reconstructed sea-ice concentration and IP25 data obtained from the same core, as well as with historical records of Icelandic sea ice, suggests that diatoms may provide a valuable tool for future quantitative reconstructions of past sea-ice variability. In addition, agreement between changes in the reconstructed sea-ice record and variations in the abundance of the major diatom components indicates that sea-ice conditions on the North Icelandic shelf are generally strongly influenced by changes in the strength of two different water masses, the cold Polar water periodically derived from the East Greenland Current and the warm Irminger Current derived from the North Atlantic Current. Our proxy evidence also indicates that variations in solar activity have a considerable impact on ocean dynamics, which in turn affects sea-ice abundance.

Diatoms as indicators of environmental change in coastal areas:a case study in lianjiang coast of East China Sea

Owing to the significant differences in environmental characteristics and explanatory factors among estuarine and coastal regions,research on diatom transfer functions and database establishment remains *** study analysed diatoms in surface sediment samples and a sediment core from the lianjiang coast of the East China Sea,together with environmental *** component analysis of the environmental variables showed that sea surface salinity(SSS)and sea surface temperature were the most important factors controlling hydrological conditions in the lianjiang coastal area,whereas canonical correspondence analysis indicated that SSS and pH were the main environmental factors affecting diatom *** on the modern diatom species–environmental variable database,we developed a diatom-based SSS transfer function to quantitatively reconstruct the variability in SSS between 1984 and 2021 for sediment core HK3 from the lianjiang coastal *** agreement between the reconstructed SSS and instrument SSS data from 1984 to 2021 suggests that diatombased SSS reconstruction is reliable for studying past SSS variability in the lianjiang coastal *** low SSS events in AD 2019,2013,and 1999,together with an increased relative concentration of freshwater diatom species and coarser sediment grain sizes,corresponded to two super-typhoon events and a catastrophic flooding event in lianjiang ***,a diatom-based SSS transfer function for reconstructing past SSS variability in the estuarine and coastal areas of the East China Sea can be further used to reflect the paleoenvironmental events in this region.

We analyzed the biogenic silica(BSi)content and produced a diatom-based summer sea-surface temperature(SST)reconstruction for sediment core GC4 from the Holsteinsborg Dyb,West *** aim was to reconstruct marine productivity and climatic fluctuations during the last *** BSi content and diatom abundance suggest relatively high marine productively during the interval of AD 1000–1400,corresponding in time to the Medieval Warm Period(MWP).The summer SST reconstruction indicates relatively warm conditions during AD 900–1100,followed by cooling after AD *** extended cooling period during AD 1400–1900 is characterized by prolonged low in reconstructed SST and high sea-ice *** BSi values fluctuated during this period,suggesting varying marine productivity during the little Ice Age(liA).There is no significant correlation between the BSi content and SST during the last millennium,suggesting that the summer SST has little influence on marine productively in the Holsteinsborg Dyb.A good correspondence between the BSi content and the element Ti counts in core GC4 suggests that silicate-rich meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet was likely responsible for changes in marine productively in the Holsteinsborg Dyb.

The insoluble aluminum content in steels has an important influence on the quality of the *** this paper,laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy（liBS）was used to analyze the insoluble aluminum content in steel samples with scanning *** threshold value which was used to distinguish soluble and insoluble aluminum was calculated by an iteration *** this method the value of summation of the average intensity and 2.5 times of standard deviations was *** and soluble aluminum content calibration curves were generated and can be used for the determination of the total and soluble aluminum contents in steel *** insoluble aluminum content could be calculated by subtracting the soluble aluminum content from the total aluminum *** insoluble aluminum contents in standard spectrum steel samples and real steel samples were rapidly determined using this mathematical *** results agreed well with the value obtained by chemical methods.
