An Exploratory Analysis of Vegetation Strategies to Reduce Shallow Landslide Activity on Loess Hillslopes, Northeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

Heavy summer rainfall induces significant soil erosion and shallow landslide activity on the loess hillslopes of the Xining Basin at the northeast margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This study examines the mechanical effects of five native shrubs that can be used to reduce shallow landslide activity. We measured single root tensile resistance and shear resistance, root anatomical structure and direct shear and triaxial shear for soil without roots and five root- soil composite systems. Results show that Atriplex canescens （Pursh） Nutt. possessed the strongest roots, followed by Caragana korshinskii Kom., Zygophyllum xanthoxylon （Bunge） Maxim., Nitraria tangutorum Bobr. and Lycium chinense Mill. Single root strength and shear resistance relationships with root diameter are characterized by power or exponential relations, consistent with the Mohr- Coulomb law. Root mechanical strength reflects their anatomical structure, especially the percentage of phloem and xylem cells, and the degree and speed of periderm lignifications. The cohesion force of root- soil composite systems is notably higher than that of soil without roots, with increasing amplitudes of cohesion force for A. canescens, C. korshinskii, Z. xanthoxylon, N. tangutorurn and L. chinense of 75.9%, 75.1%, 36.2%, 24.6% and 17.0 % respectively. When subjected to shear forces, the soil without root samples show much greater lateral deformation thanthe root-soil composite systems, reflecting the restraining effects of roots. Findings from this paper indicate that efforts to reduce shallow landslides in this region by enhancing root reinforcement will be achieved most effectively using A. canescens and C. korshinskii.

A modified heuristics-based model for simulating realistic pedestrian movement behavior

Human cytomegalovirus(CMV) is a herpesvirus,which establishes lifelong latency after primary infection and leads to severe disease in immunocompromised patients. However,CMV infection in immunocompetent patients is usually asymptomatic and severe organ damage is rarely reported. We report a case of severe CMV hepatitis in an immunocompetent patient presenting with cholestasis,portal hypertensionrelated ascites and pancytopenia. The patient was asymptomatic with normal liver function and negative CMV Dna after two weeks of antiviral therapy. This case is an example of a common infection with an uncommon presentation,and suggests that testing for CMV should be carried out,even in patients with normal immune status,presenting with severe liver damage or cholestasis.

Chronic kidney disease and risks of adverse clinical events in patients with atrial fibrillation

Collagenous gastritis in a young Chinese woman:A case report

BACKGROUND Collagenous gastritis(CG) is a rare condition whose pathogenesis may be related to immune abnormalities. We report a case of CG from *** SUMMARY A 24-year-old woman presented with recurrent abdominal distension and discomfort for 3 mo. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy found diffuse nodular elevation-depression changes in the mucosa of the entire gastric *** ultrasound showed predominant involvement of the lamina propria and submucosa, and computed tomography imaging showed mild enhancement of the gastric wall. Pathological histology revealed that the thickness of the subepithelial collagen band was about 40 μm, and the Masson trichrome staining result was positive and the Congo red staining result was negative. This case is consistent with the child-adolescent type of *** Serum pepsinogen Ⅰ, pepsinogen Ⅱ, pepsinogen Ⅰ/Ⅱ ratio, and gastrin-17 may be potential non-invasive monitoring markers. Currently, treatments for CG vary,and the likely prognosis is unknown. Individual cases of gastric cancer in patients with CG have been reported.

Visualizing nitric oxide-dependent HIF-1 activity under hypoxia with a lipid droplet-targeting fluorescent probe

Evaluating the correlation between hypoxia inducible factor 1(HIF-1) and nitric oxide(NO) generated under hypoxia is of great significance. In this work, we developed a fluorescent probe for the monitor of HIF-1 activity influenced by NO under hypoxia in hepatoma cells with dual-targeting for hepatocyte and lipid droplet(LD). The probe shows excellent selectivity to NO and high sensitivity with 6000-fold fluorescence enhancement. live cell imaging experiments revealed the probe’s capability of imaging exogenous and endogenous NO with specific in LDs of Hep G2 cells. For cells under hypoxia, HIF-1 induced LD level is observed to correlate with NO level. This work provides the in-situ visualization of NO-dependent HIF-1 upregulation through LD accumulation.

Effect of high-dose rosuvastatin loading before percutaneous coronary intervention in female patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome

Background Early loading statin therapy before percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） is associated with reduced mortality and periprocedural myocardial injury. The aim of this study was to study the effect of rosuvastatin loading therapy before PCI in female patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome （NSTEACS）. Methods Consecutive 117 female patients with NSTEACS were randomly assigned to either the group of rosuvastatin loading before PCI （20 mg 12 hours before angioplasty procedure, with a further 10 mg dose 2 hours before procedure, the loading dose group, n=59） or the no rosuvastatin treatment group before PCI （control group, n=58）. Periprocedural myocardial injury, periprocedural changes of high sensitivity C-reactive protein （hs-CRP）, interleukin （IL）-l, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-a in serum and the incidence of major adverse cardiac events （MACE） 3 months and 6 months later were assessed. Results The incidence of periprocedural myocardia~ injury was higher in control group than loading dose group （CKMB： 10.17% vs. 25.86%, P=0.027; Troponin I： 11.86% vs. 29.31%, P=-0.019）. MACE occurred in 1.69% of patients in loading dose group and 12.07% of those in control group 3 months after procedure （P=-0.026）, 3.39% vs. 17.24% at 6 months （P=-0.014）. The levels of hs-CRP, IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-c（ in serum were not significantly different between the two groups before PCI, but after PCI they were significantly higher in control *** High-dose rosuvastatin loading before PCI significantly reduced periprocedural myocardial injury and periprocedural inflammation cytokines release and improved 3-month and 6-month clinical outcomes in female patients with NSTEACS who underwent PCI.
