Passive acoustic.m.nitoring is emerging as a promising solution to the urgent, global need for new biodiversity assessment methods. The ecological relevance of the soundscape is increasingly recognised, and the affordability of robust hardware for remote audio recording is stimulating international interest in the potential for acoustic.m.thods for biodiversity *** scale of the data involved requires automated methods,however, the development of acoustic sensor networks capable of sampling the soundscape across time and space and relaying the data to an accessible storage location remains a significant technical challenge, with power management at its core. Recording and transmitting large quantities of audio data is power intensive,hampering long-term deployment in remote, off-grid locations of key ecological interest. Rather than transmitting heavy audio data, in this paper, we propose a low-cost and energy efficient wireless acoustic sensor network integrated with edge c.m.uting structure for remote acoustic.m.nitoring and in situ *** and c.m.utation of acoustic indices are carried out directly on edge devices built from low noise primo condenser microphones and Teensy microcontrollers, using internal FFT hardware support. Resultant indices are transmitted over a ZigBee-based wireless mesh network to a destination *** tests of audio quality, indices c.m.utation and power consumption demonstrate acoustic equivalence and significant power savings over current solutions.

The objective of this paper is to seek an alternative to the numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations by a method similar to solving the BGK-type modeled lattice Boltzmann *** proposed method is valid for both gas and liquid flows.A discrete flux scheme(DFS)is used to derive the governing equations for two distribution functions;one for mass and another for thermal *** equations are derived by considering an infinitesimally small control volume with a velocity lattice representation for the distribution *** zero-order moment equation of the mass distribution function is used to recover the continuity equation,while the first-order moment equation recovers the linear momentum *** recovered equations are correct to the first order of the Knudsen number(Kn);thus,satisfying the continuum ***,the zero-order moment equation of the thermal energy distribution function is used to recover the thermal energy *** aerodynamic flows,it is shown that the finite difference solution of the DFS is equivalent to solving the lattice Boltzmann equation(LBE)with a BGK-type model and a specified equation of *** formulated,the DFS can be used to simulate a variety of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic *** of classical aeroacoustics,c.m.ressible flow with shocks,inc.m.ressible isothermal and non-isothermal couette flows,stratified flow in a cavity,and double diffusive flow inside a rectangle are used to demonstrate the validity and extent of the *** good to excellent agreement with known analytical and/or numerical solutions is obtained;thus lending evidence to the DFS approach as an alternative to solving the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow simulations.

Background Erythema nodosum can be associated with a number of systemic diseases. There is, however, a paucity of information in the pediatric literature on this condition. The purpose of this article is to familiarize pediatricians with the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of erythema nodosum. Data sources A Pubmed search was c.m.leted in clinical Queries using the key terms 'erythema nodosum'. Results clinically, erythema nodosum presents with a sudden onset of painful, erythematous, subcutaneous nodules mainly localized to the pretibial areas. Lesions are usually bilateral and symmetrical, ranging from 1 to 5 cm in diameter. Erythema nodosum may be associated with a variety of conditions such as infection, medications, sarcoidosis, pregnancy, inflamma-tory bowel disease, vaccination, autoimmune disease, malignancy, and miscellaneous causes. The condition is idiopathic in approximately 50% of cases. The diagnosis is mainly clinical with biopsy reserved for atypical cases. To evaluate for the underlying cause, some basic laboratory screening studies are worthwhile in most cases and include a c.m.lete blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and/or c-reactive protein, throat swab culture, antistreptococcal O titers, and a chest radiograph. Other tests should be individualized, guided by the history and physical examination results. most cases of ery-thema nodosum are self-limited and require no treatment. Bed rest and leg elevation are generally rec.m.ended to reduce the disc.m.ort. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the first-line treatment for pain management. conclusions As erythema nodosum is often a cutaneous manifestation of a systemic disease, a thorough search should be performed to reveal the underlying cause.

The natural c.m.ound thymoquinone, extracted from Nigella sativa(black c.m.n), is widely used in humans for its anti-oxidative properties. Thymoquinone is known for its acute endotheliumindependent vasodilator effects in isolated rat aortae and pulmonary arteries, depending in part on activation of adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channels and inhibition of voltage-dependent calcium channels. The c.m.ound also improves endothelial dysfunction in mesenteric arteries of ageing rodents and in aortae of rabbits treated with pyrogallol, by inhibiting oxidative stress. Serendipitously,thymoquinone was found to augment contractions in isolated arteries with endothelium of both rats and pigs. The endothelium-dependent augmentation it causes counterintuitively depends on biased activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase(sGc) producing inosine 3',5'-cyclic.m.nophosphate(cyclic ImP) rather than guanosine 3',5'-cyclic.m.nophosphate. This phenomenon shows a striking mechanistic similarity to the hypoxic augmentation previously observed in porcine coronary arteries. The cyclic ImP preferentially produced under thymoquinone exposure causes an increased contractility of arterial smooth muscle by interfering with calcium homeostasis. This brief review summarizes the vascular pharmacology of thymoquinone, focussing in particular on how the c.m.ound causes endothelium-dependent contractions by biasing the activity of sGc.

As the rapid growth of mobile social networks,mobile peer-to-peer(P2P)c.m.unications and mobile edge c.m.uting(mEc)have been developed to reduce the traffic load and improve the c.m.utation capacity of cellular ***,the stability of social network is largely ignored in the advances of P2P and mEc,which is related to the social relations between *** plays a vital role in improving the efficiency and reliability of traffic offloading *** this paper,we integrate an edge node and the nearby P2P users as a mobile P2P social network and introduce the problem of adaptive anchored(k,r)-core to maintain the stability of multiple mobile P2P *** aims to adaptively select and retain a set of critical users for each network,whose participation is critical to overall stability of the network,and allocate certain resource for them so that the maximum number of users of all networks will remain engaged and the traffic of cellular network can be *** called the retained users as anchor *** address it,we devise a peer-edge-cloud framework to achieve the adaptive allocation of *** also develop a similarity based onion layers anchored(k,r)-core(S-OLAK)algorithm to explore the anchor *** results based on a real large-scale mobile P2P data set demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Afteruse development of former landfll sites in Hong Kong

Landfll is one of the major methods in disposing of municipal solid waste(mSW) in Hong Kong. There are now 13 closed landfll sites in Hong Kong, and a restoration program has been launched since 1999 to transform the closed landfll sites back into recreational area. The mSW underneath these closed landfll sites will biodegrade slowly and gradually, releasing toxic gases and leachate. As there have only been a few afteruse development ever c.m.leted in Hong Kong, this paper describes the consideration in planning and design of two former landfll sites in Hong Kong–Ngau chi Wan(NcW) and Jordan Valley(JV) landflls, in particular a discussion on the mSW settlement. Various models in predicting the longterm mSW settlement have been available. This paper reviews the applicability of these models to predict mSW settlement. However, as the predicted settlements can be signifcantly in error, they need sitespecifc calibration and validation. This paper therefore presents the settlement monitoring data in these former landfll sites over the last 30 years, and suggests modifying the Bjarngard and Edgers’ method for estimating this long-term settlement as well as the effect of additional surcharge due to afteruse development. Based on the regression of these data, c.m.ression indices cce and c at different stages of the settlement in the modifed method have been calibrated and validated.
