Detection of Breaking Waves Using X-Band Pulse Radar in the Nearshore Region

An X-band pulsed Doppler microwave radar has been used to determine the characteristics of breaking waves. Field experiments were conducted at the Shuang-Si estuary in the north of Taiwan in the winter of 2005. Analyses on maxima radar cross section and Doppler frequency shift are done to characterize wave breaking zones. Based on observations of breaking waves, the wave breaking zones are shown to be located at water depths of 1.8 to 2.2 m in the experimental site. In general, the results indicate that a radar system has the potential to delineate the spatial variation of breaking waves clearly and that this is sufficient to achieve a measurement operation for near-shore air-sea interaction events.

The destruction of hexafluoroethane (C2F6), also known as R-116, was investigated in a nonthermal plasma reactor packed with dielectric pellets. The effects of the feed gas composition and the input power on the destruction of C2F6 were examined. The feed gas composition was varied by changing the oxygen content, the argon content and the initial C2F6 concentration. An increased input power led to increased C2F6 destruction as a result of promoting the electron-molecule collisions to dissociate C2F6 molecules. The addition of argon to the feed gas greatly improved the C2F6 destruction by reducing the energy losses due to vibrational excitation and dissociation of N2 molecules, while the increases in the oxygen content and the initial C2F6 concentration decreased the destruction efficiency. The byproducts including CO2, CO, COF2, CF4, SiF4, NO2, and N2O were identified, and the destruction mechanisms were elucidated, referring to these compounds. The most abundant byproduct was found to be carbonyl fluoride (COF2), indicating that it serves as an important medium to convert C2F6 into CO2. The energy requirement for the C2F6 destruction was in the range of 8.2–45.3 MJ/g, depending on the initial concentration.

Background Administrative data are frequently used in stroke *** accurate identification of patients who had an ischaemic stroke,and those receiving thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy(EVT)is critical to ensure representativeness and *** examined differences in patient samples based on mode of identification,and propose a strategy for future patient and procedure identification in large administrative *** We used non-public administrative data from the state of California to identify all patients who had an ischaemic stroke discharged from an emergency department(ED)or inpatient hospitalisation from 2010 to 2017 based on International Classification of Disease(ICD-9)(2010-2015),ICD-10(2015-2017)and Medicare Severity-Diagnosis-related Group(MS-DRG)discharge *** identified patients with interhospital transfers,patients receiving thrombolytics and patients treated with EVT based on ICD,Current Procedural Terminology(CPT)and MS-DRG *** determined what proportion of these transfers and procedures would have been identified with ICD versus MS-DRG discharge *** Of 365099 ischaemic stroke encounters,most(87.70%)had both a stroke-related ICD-9 or ICD-10 code and stroke-related MS-DRG code;12.28% had only an ICD-9 or ICD-10 code and 0.02% had only an MS-DRG *** all transfers(99.99%)were identified using ICD *** identified 32433 thrombolytic-treated patients(8.9% of total)using ICD,CPT and MS-DRG codes;the combination of ICD and CPT codes identified nearly all(98%).We identified 7691 patients treated with EVT(2.1%of total)using ICD and MS-DRG codes;both MS-DRG and ICD-9/ICD-10 codes were necessary because ICD codes alone missed 13.2%of *** codes only pertain to outpatient/ED patients and are not useful for EVT *** ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnosis codes capture nearly all ischaemic stroke encounters and transfers,while the combination of ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes are adequate

In clinical therapy,the amount of antigen administered to achieve oral tolerance for allergic diseases is large,and the cost is a major *** this study,we used tobacco plants to develop a large-scale protein production system for allergen-specific immunotherapy,and we investigated the mechanisms of oral tolerance induced by a transgenic plant-derived *** used plants(tobacco leaves)transgenic for the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus 2(Der p2)antigen to produce Der *** received total protein extract from Der p2 orally once per day over 6 days(days 0–2 and days 6–8).Mice were also sensitized and challenged with yeast-derived recombinant Der p2(rDer p2),after which the mice were examined for airway.h.per-responsiveness and airway *** sensitization and challenge with rDer p2,mice that were fed with total protein extracted from transgenic plants showed decreases in serum Der p2-specific IgE and IgG1 titers,decreased IL-5 and eotaxin levels in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid,and eosinophil infiltration in the *** addition,hyper-responsiveness was also decreased in mice that were fed with total protein extracted from transgenic plants,and CD4^(+)CD25^(+)Foxp3^(+) regulatory T cells were significantly increased in mediastinal and mesenteric lymph ***,splenocytes isolated from transgenic plant protein-fed mice exhibited decreased proliferation and increased IL-10 secretion after stimulation with rDer *** data here suggest that allergen-expressing transgenic plants could be used for therapeutic purposes for allergic diseases.

Photonic crystal vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (PC VCSELs) are reviewed. The PC VCSEL shows single-transverse-mode continuous wave operation in the entire current range with side mode suppression ratio 35-40 dB. A simple 3-D plane wave expansion method is found to be very effective in analyzing the modal properties of the PC VCSELs.

We describe three major optical characterization methods for fiber and fiber devices. A simple servo controlled scanning fiber-optic confocal microscope is proposed for determining the refractive index profile of an optical fiber. To measure the chromatic dispersion of a short length fiber a Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer with a novel interferometric distance meter is introduced. At the end, a tomographic method is demonstrated for determining the 2-D stress profile of a fiber.

Accurate diagnosis of Pancreatic cysts(PC) is key in the management. The knowledge of indications for surgery, the role of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration, cyst fluid analysis, imaging, and surveillance of PC are all important in the diagnosis and management of PC. Currently, there are many guidelines for the management of PC. The optimal use of these guidelines with a patient-centered approach helps diagnose early cancer and prevent the spread of cancer.
