Carbon stock estimation by dual-polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and forest inventory data in a Mediterranean forest landscape

Forest ecosystems play a crucial role in mitigating global climate change by forming massive carbon sinks. their carbon stocks and stock changes need to be quantified for carbon budget balancing and international reporting schemes. However, direct sampling and biomass weighing may not always be possible for quantification studies conducted in large forests. In these cases, indirect methods that use forest inventory information combined with remote sensing data can be beneficial. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images offer numerous opportunities to researchers as freely distributed remote sensing data. this study aims to estimate the amount of total carbon stock (tCS) in forested lands of the Kizildag Forest enterprise. to this end, the actual storage capacities of five carbon pools, i.e. above- and below-ground, deadwood, litter, and soil, were calculated using the indirect method based on ground measurements of 264 forest inventory plots. they were then associated with the backscattered values from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data in a Geographical Information System (GIS). Finally, tCS was separately modelled and mapped. the best regression model was developed using the HH polarization of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 with an adjusted R^(2) of 0.78 (p to the model, the estimated tCS was about 2 Mt for the entire forest, with an average carbon storage of 133 t ha^(−1). the map showed that the distribution of tCS was heterogenic across the study area. Carbon hotspots were mostly composed of pure stands of Anatolian black pine and mixed, over-mature stands of Lebanese cedar and taurus fir. It was concluded that the total carbon stocks of forest ecosystems could be estimated using appropriate SAR images at acceptable accuracy levels for forestry purposes. the use of additional ancillary data may provide more delicate and reliable estimations in the future. Given the implications of this study, the spatiotemporal dynamics of carbon can be effectively controlled

Overview of fluoride distribution in major aquifer units of northern Nigeria

Symptoms of dental fluorosis such as mottled teeth are common among adults, youth and children in several rural communities in northern Nigeria. this has inspired the Authors to investigate the concentration of fluoride in the natural water systems of the major aquifer units (Basement, Sedimentary, Volcanic and Younger Granites) in some parts of northern Nigeria and to delineate areas of high risk of dental fluorosis, crippling skeletal fluorosis and dental caries. Six hundred and twenty seven analytical values for water were obtained from the literature and from analysis of samples from the major aquifer units of northern Nigeria: Basement-232, Sedimentary-328, Younger Granites-38 and Volcanic-28. Fluoride concentrations range from 0.03 to 10.30 mg/L in the Basement Aquifer;0.00 to 5.00 mg/L in the Sedimentary Aquifer;0.00 to 0.89 mg/L in the Younger Granites Aquifer;and 0.00 to 0.78 mg/L in the Volcanic Aquifer. A background value of 1.0 mg/L for fluoride concentration for northern Nigeria has been determined in this study. Areas identified with high fluoride in their waters above the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended maximum permissible level in drinking water of 1.5 mg/L are: Dzuma, Dilchidima, Ngalbi, Udin, Kaltungo Biliri, Shongwom, Dass in the the northeast basement aquifers;Maiduguri, Mafa, Mobbar, Ngala, Logomani, Gombe in the northeast sedimentary aquifers: Langtang, Dorong, Furzi in the north-central basement aquifers and Pakoro in the northcentral sedimentary aquifers: Shawo and Barkin Lamba in the northwest basement aquifers. No anomalously high values of fluoride were recorded in the northwest sedimentary aquifers. All waters sampled in the Younger Granites and the Volcanic Aquifers have fluoride contents lower than the WHO recommended maximum permissible level in drinking water of 1.5 mg/L;and over ninety percent of the waters have fluoride concentration below the 0.5 mg/L recommended by WHO for the prevention of dental caries. Occurrence of fluoride in the drinking waters of Langtang area, north central Nigeria

the aim of the study is to assess the occurrence of fluoride in the drinking water sources of Langtang area. Out of the thirty seven water samples collected from drinking water sources (hand dug wells, boreholes, streams and a spring) and analysed. Results revealed that except for fluoride, all other parameters are within the World Health Organisation recommended limits for water consumption. Fluoride in the waters ranges from 0.12 - 10.30 mg/l with a mean of 2.42 mg/l. low levels of fluoride are recorded in the stream samples. However, no clear variations in fluoride content have been observed in both the borehole samples and those from the hand dug wells. Negative correlation exhibited between fluoride and sulphate, fluoride and Phosphate and the poor correlation between fluoride and nitrate, fluoride and chloride rules out the possibility of anthropogenic source of the fluoride in the waters. Positive correlation between lithium and magnesium, and poor but positive correlation between fluoride and lithium indicate that micas within the host rock and the pegmatite may be responsible for leaching fluoride into the waters. two of the major water types;Ca + Mg-HCO3 and the Na + K-HCO3 water type obtain in the area have good association with fluoride content. Consumption of high fluoride waters clearly manifests in the inhabitant of the area in form of dental fluorosis and bowing of legs especially in children between the ages 7 - 11 years.

目的探讨CircRNA-tbpl1通过海绵吸附miR-214-3p调控自噬在低氧性肺动脉高压(HPH)血管重塑中的作用,并分析其机制。方法 12只8周龄C57BL/6雄性小鼠根据随机数字表法分为两组:对照组和HPH组,每组6只,通过低氧构建HPH模型小鼠,观察两组小鼠血流动力学差异,He染色检测肺组织病理学改变,蛋白免疫印迹(Western blot)检测选择性自噬接头蛋白(p62)、微管相关蛋白1轻链3(LC3)和重组人自噬效应蛋白(Beclin-1)水平,实时荧光定量PCR(qRt-PCR)检测CircRNA-tbpl1和miR-214-3p表达水平。分离小鼠原代肺动脉平滑肌细胞(PASMCs)并进行高、低氧分组培养,低氧处理PASMCs,细胞计数试剂盒-8(CCK-8)检测细胞活性,Western blot检测自噬相关蛋白表达,qRt-PCR检测CircRNA-tbpl1的相对表达水平。通过转染和自噬诱导剂雷帕霉素干预,分析CircRNA-tbpl1与PASMCs自噬的相关性。通过共转染shCircRNA-tbpl1和miR-214-3p抑制物,分析CircRNA-tbpl1/miR-214-3p对低氧诱导的PASMCs自噬和细胞增殖活性的影响。结果与对照组小鼠比较,HPH组小鼠的右心室收缩压(RVSP)[(39.50±3.69)mmHg比(21.00±3.42)mmHg,Peclin-1表达水平显著上调,p62表达下调,CircRNA-tbpl1水平[(2.99±0.28)比(1.00±0.15),Peclin-1表达水平上调,p62表达下调,CircRNA-tbpl1水平[(2.84±0.34)比(1.00±0.12),Ptbpl1可抑制低氧诱导的PASMCs自噬,减弱细胞增殖活性[(70.23±7.30)%比(100.00±4.56)%,Ptbpl1海绵吸附miR-214-3p。与sh-NC组比较,sh-CircRNA-tbpl1组的自噬水平减弱,细胞增殖活力降低[(71.13±8.17)%比(100.00±5.32)%,Ptbpl1+miRNA-NC组比较,sh-CircRNA-tbpl1+miR-214-3p抑制物组的自噬水平升高,细胞增殖活力增强[(85.78±5.37)%比(69.80±6.34)%,Ptbpl1可能通过海绵吸附miR-214-3p抑制低氧诱导的自噬,从而缓解HPH血管重塑。

Long acting octreotide in the treatment of advanced hepatocellular cancer and overexpression of somatostatin receptors: Randomized placebo-controlled trial

AIM: to estimate if and to what extent long acting octreotide (lar) improves survival and quality of life in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MetHODS: A total of 127 cirrhotics, stages A-B, due to chronic viral infections and with advanced HCC, were enrolled in the study. Scintigraphy with 111Indium labeled octreotide was performed in all cases. the patients with increased accumulation of radionuclear compound were randomized to receive either oral placebo only or octreotide/octreotide lar.only as follows: octreotide 0.5mg s.c. every 8 h for 6 wk, at the end of wk 4-8 octreotide lar 20 mg i.m. and at the end of wk 12 and every 4 wk octreotide lar 30mg i.m.. Follow-up was worked out monthly as well as the estimation of quality of life (QLQ-C30 questionnaire). Patients with negative somatostatin receptors (SStR) detection were followed up in the same manner. ReSULtS: Scintigraphy demonstrated SStR in 61 patients. thirty were randomized to receive only placebo and 31 only octreotide. A significantly higher survival time was observed for the octreotide group (49 ± 6 wk) as compared to the control group (28 ± 1 wk) and to the SStR negative group (28 ± 2 wk), LR = 20.39, df = 2, P the octreotide group presented 68.5% lower hazard ratio [95% CI (47.4%-81.2%)]. During the f irst year, a 22%, 39% and 43% decrease in the QLQ-C30 score was observed in each group ***: the proposed therapeutic approach has shown to improve the survival and quality of life in SStR positive patients with advanced HCC.

Due to the deformation ability even under small loads, hydrogels have been widely used as a type of soft materials in various applications such as actuating and sensing, and have attracted many researchers to study their behaviors. In this paper, the behavior of hydrogel micro-valves with reverse sensitivity to the p H inside a t-junction flow sorter is investigated. With the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) approach, the effects of various parameters such as the inlet pressure and the p H value on the stress and deformation of the micro-valves are examined, and the results with and without FSI,including the flow rate and the closure p H, are compared. In order to reduce the response time of hydrogels, the effects of three different patterns on the performance of the microvalves are explored. eventually, it is concluded that FSI is a key influential factor in designing and analyzing the behaviors of hydrogels.
