CSES(China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite) is a mission developed by CNSA(Chinese National Space Administration) and ASI(Italian Space Agency), to investigate the near-Earth electromagnetic, plasma and particle environment, for studying the seismo-associated disturbances in the ionosphere-magnetosphere transition zone. The anthropogenic and electromagnetic noise,as well as the natural non-seismic electromagnetic emissions is mainly due to tropospheric activity. In particular, the mission aims to confirming the existence of possible temporal correlations between the occurrence of earthquakes for medium and strong magnitude and the observation in space of electromagnetic perturbations, plasma variations and precipitation of bursts with highenergy charged particles from the inner Van Allen belt. In this framework, the high energy particle detector(HEPD) of the CSES mission has been developed by the Italian LIMADOU Collaboration. HEPD is an advanced detector based on a tower of scintillators and a silicon tracker that provides good energy and angular resolution and a wide angular acceptance, for electrons of 3–100 Me V, protons of 30–200 Me V and light nuclei up to the oxygen. CSES satellite has been launched on February 2^(nd), 2018 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center(China).

Three predictive scores compared in a retrospective multicenter study of nonunion tibial shaft fracture

BACKGROUND Delayed union,malunion,and nonunion are serious complications in the healing of fractures.Predicting the risk of nonunion before or after surgery is challenging.AIM To compare the most prevalent predictive scores of nonunion used in clinical practice to determine the most accurate score for predicting nonunion.METHODS We collected data from patients with tibial shaft fractures undergoing surgery from January 2016 to December 2020 in three different trauma hospitals.In this retrospective multicenter study,we considered only fractures treated with intramedullary nailing.We calculated the tibia FRACTure prediction healING days(FRACTING)score,Nonunion Risk Determination score,and Leeds-Genoa Nonunion Index(LEG-NUI)score at the time of definitive fixation.RESULTS Of the 130 patients enrolled,89(68.4%)healed within 9 months and were classified as union.The remaining patients(n=41,31.5%)healed after more than 9 months or underwent other surgical procedures and were classified as nonunion.After calculation of the three scores,LEG-NUI and FRACTING were the most accurate at predicting healing.CONCLUSION LEG-NUI and FRACTING showed the best performances by accurately predicting union and nonunion.

In astrophysics, the boundary conditions for plasma phenomena are provided by nature and the astronomer faces the problem of understanding them from a variety of observations [Hester J J et al 1996 Astrophys. J. 456 225], on the other hand, in laboratory plasma experiments the electromagnetic boundary conditions become a major problem in the set-up of the machine that produces the plasma, an issue that has to be investigated step by step and to be modified and adapted with great patience, in particular in the case of an innovative plasma confinement experiment. The PROTO-SPHERA machine [Alladio F et al 2006 Nucl. Fusion 46 S613] is a magnetic confinement experiment, that emulates in the laboratory the jet + torus plasma configurations often observed in astrophysics: an inner magnetized jet of plasma centered on the(approximate) axis of symmetry and surrounded by a magnetized plasma torus orthogonal to this jet. The PROTO-SPHERA plasma is simply connected, i.e., no metal current conducting rod is linked to the plasma torus, while instead it is the inner magnetized plasma jet(in the following always called the plasma centerpost) that is linked to the torus. It is mandatory that no spurious plasma current path modifies the optimal shape of the plasma centerpost. Moreover, as the plasma torus is produced and sustained, in absence of any applied inductive electric field, by the inner plasma centerpost through magnetic reconnections [Taylor J B and Turner M F 1989 Nucl.Fusion 29 219], it is required as well that spurious current paths do not surround the torus on its outboard, in order not to lower the efficiency of the magnetic reconnections that maintain the plasma torus at the expense of the plasma centerpost. Boundary conditions have been corrected,up to the point that the first sustainment in steady state has been achieved for the combined plasma.

The combination of urbanization and global warming leads to urban overheating and compounds the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events due to climate change.Yet,the risk of urban overheating can be mitigated by urban green-blue-grey infrastructure(GBGI),such as parks,wetlands,and engineered greening,which have the potential to effectively reduce summer air temperatures.Despite many reviews,the evidence bases on quantified GBGI cooling benefits remains partial and the practical recommendations for implementation are unclear.This systematic literature review synthesizes the evidence base for heat mitigation and related co-benefits,identifies knowledge gaps,and proposes recommendations for their implementation to maximize their benefits.After screening 27,486 papers,202 were reviewed,based on 51 GBGI types categorized under 10 main divisions.Certain GBGI(green walls,parks,street trees)have been well researched for their urban cooling capabilities.However,several other GBGI have received negligible(zoological garden,golf course,estuary)or minimal(private garden,allotment)attention.The most efficient air cooling was observed in botanical gardens(5.0±3.5℃),wetlands(4.9±3.2℃),green walls(4.1±4.2℃),street trees(3.8±3.1℃),and vegetated balconies(3.8±2.7℃).Under changing climate conditions(2070–2100)with consideration of RCP8.5,there is a shift in climate subtypes,either within the same climate zone(e.g.,Dfa to Dfb and Cfb to Cfa)or across other climate zones(e.g.,Dfb[continental warm-summer humid]to BSk[dry,cold semi-arid]and Cwa[temperate]to Am[tropical]).These shifts may result in lower efficiency for the current GBGI in the future.Given the importance of multiple services,it is crucial to balance their functionality,cooling performance,and other related co-benefits when planning for the future GBGI.This global GBGI heat mitigation inventory can assist policymakers and urban planners in prioritizing effective interventions to reduce the risk of urban overheating,filling research gaps,and promoting community resi

A narrative review of the current and future role of robotic surgery in liver surgery and transplantation

Background:Minimally invasive surgery(MIS)is the technique of choice in selected patients for the treatment of liver tumors.The robotic approach is considered today the natural evolution of MIS.The application of the robotic technique in liver transplantation(LT)has been recently evaluated,especially in the living donation.The aim of this paper is to review the current role of the MIS and robotic donor hepatectomy in the literature and to evaluate the possible future implication in the transplant field.Methods:We conducted a narrative review using PubMed and Google Scholar for reports published so far,using the following keywords:minimally invasive liver surgery,laparoscopic liver surgery,robotic liver surgery,robotic living donation,laparoscopic donor hepatectomy and robotic donor hepatectomy.Results:Several advantages have been claimed in favor of robotic surgery:three-dimensional(3-D)imaging with stable and high-definition view;a more rapid learning curve than the laparoscopic one;the lack of hand tremors and the freedom of movements.Compared to open surgery,the benefits showed in the studies evaluating the robotic approach in the living donation are:less postoperative pain,the shorter period before returning to normal activity despite sustaining longer operation time.Furthermore,the 3-D and magnification view makes the technique excellent in distinguishing the right plane of transection,vascular and biliary anatomy,associated with high precision of the movements and a better bleeding control(essential for donor safety)and lower rate of vascular injury.Conclusions:The current literature does not fully support the superiority of the robotic approach versus laparoscopic or open method in living donor hepatectomy.Robotic donor hepatectomy performed by teams with high expertise and in properly selected living donors is safe and feasible.However,further data are necessary to evaluate properly the role of robotic surgery in the field of living donation.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a combination of severe motor and non-motor symptoms.Over the years,several factors have been discovered to play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease,in particular,neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.To date,the pharmacological treatments used in Parkinson's disease are exclusively symptomatic.For this reason,in recent years,the research has been directed towards the discovery and study of new natural molecules to develop potential neuroprotective therapies against Parkinson's disease.In this context,natural polyphenols have raised much attention for their important anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,but also for their ability to modulate protein misfolding.In this review,we propose to summarize the relevant in vivo and in vitro studies concerning the potential therapeutic role of natural polyphenols in Parkinson's disease.

Adult to adult living related liver transplantation: Where do we currently stand?

Adult to adult living donor liver transplantation (AALDLT) was first preformed in the United States in 1997. The procedure was rapidly integrated into clinical practice, but in 2002, possibly due to the first widely publicized donor death, the number of living liver donors plummeted. The number of donors has since reached a steady plateau far below its initial peak. In this review we evaluate the current climate of AALDLT. Specifically, we focus on several issues key to the success of AALDLT: determining the optimal indications for AALDLT, balancing graft size and donor safety, assuring adequate outflow, minimizing biliary complications, and maintaining ethical practices. We conclude by offering suggestions for the future of AALDLT in United States transplantation centers.

Endotoxin receptor CD14 gene variants and histological features in chronic HCV infection

AIM:To analyze the correlation between CD14 rs2569190/C-159T single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and disease progression in chronic hepatitis C.METHODS: Liver biopsy specimens from a total of 137 and 349 patients with chronic hepatitis C were separately evaluated with respect to necroinflammatory activity (grading) and architectural changes (staging). In one group, further histological lesions characteristic for hepatitis C, hepatitis C virus subtypes, and biochemical parameters of liver disease were also investigated. Samples of genomic DNA were genotyped for the respective SNP by 5'-nuclease assays using fluorescent dye-labeled allele-specif ic probes.RESULTS: Genotype distribution did not deviate from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In the first group, patients homozygous for the variant allele T were found to be younger than C allele carriers (39.6±12.5 vs 45.7±11.5, P=0.008). Among the histological lesions studied, portal lymphoid aggregates were more frequently observed among TT homozygotes than among C carriers (21/37 vs 32/100, P=0.008). The presence of portal lymphoid aggregates was closely correlated with hepatic inflammation (P=0.003) and with bile duct damage (P<0.001). The degree of fibrosis, in contrast, was not found to be related to the CD14 gene C-159T polymorphism.CONCLUSION: The data suggest a possible relationship between CD14 C-159T polymorphism and the formation of portal lymphoid aggregates, but not liver fibrosis progression in chronic hepatitis C.

The study of the chiroptical properties of thin-film samples of two chiral benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene-based oligothiophenes with optoelectronic properties was carried out at Diamond B23 beamline using the synchrotron radiation electronic circular dichroism imaging(SR-ECDi)facility.The experimental results support the hypothesis that the non-reciprocal circularly polarized absorption observed in these materials is due to the combined linear dichroism and linear birefringence contributions.The mapping at 50-μM spatial resolution revealed that several species coexist in the mesoscopic chiral domains likely due to different aggregated phases,which were identified in the films by SR-ECDi but could not be detected with benchtop ECD instruments.

Precision Tests of the Nonlinear Mode Coupling of Anisotropic Flow via High-Energy Collisions of Isobars

Valuable information on dynamics of expanding fluids can be inferred from the response of such systems to perturbations in their initial geometry.We apply this technique in high-energy^(96)Ru+^(96)Ru and^(96)Zr+^(96)Zr collisions to scrutinize the expansion dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma,where the initial geometry perturbations are sourced by the differences in deformations and radial profiles between^(96)Ru and^(96)Zr,and the collective response is captured by the change in anisotropic flow Vn between the two collision systems.Using a transport model,we analyze how the nonlinear coupling between lower-order flow harmonics V_(2)and V_(3)to the higher-order flow harmonics V_(4)and V_(5),expected to scale as V_(4)NL= χ_(4)V_(2)2and V_(5)NL= χ_(5)V_(2)V_(3),gets modified as one moves from^(96)Ru+^(96)Ru to^(96)Zr+^(96)Zr systems.We find that these scaling relations are valid to high precision:variations of order 20% in V_(4)NLand V_(5)NLdue to differences in quadrupole deformation,octupole deformation,and nuclear skin modify χ_(4)and χ_(5)by about 1–2%.Percent-level deviations are however larger than the expected experimental uncertainties and could be measured.Therefore,collisions of isobars with different nuclear structures are a unique tool to isolate subtle nonlinear effects in the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma that would be otherwise impossible to access in a single collision system.
