Comparison of bacterial community structures in two systems of a sewage treatment plant using PCR-DGGE analysis

The combination of PCR amplification of 16S rRNA genes with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis （DGGE） analysis was used to reveal the compositions and dynamics of bacterial communities in a sewage treatment plant with two systems, i.e., an anoxic- anaerobic-aerobic system （inverted A2O） and an anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic one （conventional A2O） over a period from February to July 2009, during which both systems experienced serious sludge bulking problems. The DGGE patterns showed that there were many common bands in both systems, suggesting the high similarity of bacterial communities of the two systems. Meanwhile, the moving window correlation analysis showed that the two systems experienced different microbial community structure changes during the period, which might be related with the different situations of the occurrence and disappearance of sludge bulking, as being reflected by sludge volume index （SVI） values. Major bands of DGGE patterns of sludge samples were further sequenced. Phylogenetic affiliation indicated that the majority of the sequences obtained were affiliated with Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes/Chlorobi group and α- and β-Proteobacteria. Two sequences showed high similarities to typical filamentous bacteria Microthrix parvicella and Nostocoida limicola I, indicating that these bacterial species have been involved in the sludge bulking problems.

Natural, protected areas offer many possibili- ties for recreation in rural areas such as camping, one of the most popular activities. The system established for pro- tected areas in Turkey aims to provide a foundation for conserving areas for recreation. One such area, Abant Natural Park, is convenient for visits from Turkey＇s two most populated metropolitan areas, Istanbul and Ankara. It also attracts tourists from other regions and countries. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the vegetation loss and land cover changes due to picnic/camping, transhu- mance, and construction over 40 years （1966-2004） in the park using data on visitor numbers, vegetation patches, corridors and connectivity. For evaluating landscape vari- ables, remote sensing data and aerial photos were used. When aerial photos were imported into the ERDAS Imagine program, ground control points identified, and individual images orthorectified, land degradation was not found in the use of camping areas. Moreover, manmade areas （road, car park and hotel） observably increased, thus decreasing the forest lands. The findings show that the land use types that have had the greatest ecological impact are transhumance and construction of hotels, which also require infrastructure development. The intensity of the ecological effects mandates precautions to lessen the impacts and the need for continuing assessment to ensure sustainable use of the area.

Multicarrier transmission systems like orthogonal frequency division multiplexing （OFDM） support high data rate and generally require no equalization at the receiver, making them simple and efficient. This paper studies the design and performance analysis of a hybrid modulation system derived from multifrequency and MQAM signals, employed in OFDM. This modulation scheme has better bit error rate （BER） performance and exhibits low PAPR. The proposed hybrid modulator reduces PAPR while keeping the OFDM transceiver design simple, as it does not require any side information or a little side information （only one bit） to be sent and is efficient for arbitrary number of subcarriers. The results of the implementations are compared with those of conventional OFDM system.

Federated Research Data Infrastructures aim to provide seamless access to research data along with services to facilitate the researchers in performing their data management *** our research on Open Science(OS),we have built cross-disciplinary federated infrastructures for different types of(open)digital resources:Open Data(OD),Open Educational Resources(OER),and open access *** each case,our approach targeted only the resource“metadata”.Based on this experience,we identified some challenges that we had to overcome again and again:lack of(i)harvesters,(ii)common metadata models and(iii)metadata mapping *** this paper,we report on the challenges we faced in the federated infrastructure projects we were involved *** structure the report based on the three challenges listed above.

Watershed disturbances caused by land use/land cover(LU/LC) change, intensive forestry practices, and other forms of watershed disturbance are known to negatively affect water quality, if best management practices(BMPs) are not present. Disturbances near or around headwaters where BMPs are absent or are inadequate may impact downstream water quality and stream ecology regardless of the presence of downstream BMPs. In this study, the recovery of two small forest-dominated watersheds(Ww and Ew) in Auburn, Alabama, USA, was monitored 6-years after a partial clearcut was done. The streamside management zone(SMZ) in Ww was also partially harvested shortly after the partial clearcut to improve its sediment trapping effectiveness over the long-term. The hydrology and sediment transport in these watersheds were expected to stabilize over this period, however, new disturbances in the headwaters of both watersheds changed the watershed dynamics. Streamflow and sediment load were examined over a15-month period from February 2014 to May 2015. The clearcut in Ww and Ew, and the partially harvested SMZ in Ww seemed to have recovered; however, substantial amount of sediment load were measured across all monitoring sites in both watersheds as a result of upstream disturbances. This study emphasizes the necessity of watershed management as a whole, and the importance of BMP applications within the entire watershed. It also highlights the fact that watershed management and BMP implementation is a dynamic process, thus, strategies and techniques need to be continuously adapted in response to environmental changes.

Shea(Vitellaria paradoxa ***.)is a multipurpose tree species indigenous to the Sudano Sahelian zone of Africa and occurs as the most abundant economic tree species in northern *** edible oil(shea butter)extracted from shea kernel is ranked as the most economic product of the *** fruit set and yield of shea are known to be influenced by insect pollination,the actual contribution of insect pollinators to its reproductive success has rarely been *** study estimated the percentage insect pollinator dependence and monetary value of insect pollination per bag of shea kernel(85 kg)in the Guinea savanna *** pollination and insect exclusion treatments were applied to the flowers of 18 randomly selected matured shea trees and observed from the onset of flowering to fruit *** of total production value attributed to insect pollination approach was used in estimating the monetary value of pollination per bag of shea kernel with the average market price as *** study revealed an insect pollinator dependence of 77%and 73%for fruit set and dry kernel yield,*** number of fruit set per inflorescence varied significantly between insectexcluded and open-pollinated inflorescences(p<0.05).The monetary value of insect pollination was estimated at GH₵73.21(US$18.67)per bag of kernel as of August *** is a high insect pollinator–dependent species and the conservation of insect pollinators would be critical to the sustainability of yield.
