Objective measurements are required for computer-aided sperm morphometric analysis （CASMA） machines to distinguish normal from abnormal sperm heads. The morphometric characteristics of spermatozoa in 72 samples of semen and of spermatozoa from 72 other semen samples after swim-up were quantified by the semi-automated Integrated Sperm Analysis System （ISAS） computer-aided system, which measured the sperm head parameters length （l）, width （W）, area （A）, perimeter （P）, acrosomal area （Ac）, and the derived values l/W and P/A. For each man a homogeneous population of distributions characterized seminal spermatozoa （7 942 cells： median values l 4.4 μm, W 2.8μm A 9.8 μm^2, P 12.5 μm, Ac 47.5%, l/W 1.57, P/A 1.27）, and there was no significant difference in within- and among-individual variation. Different men could have spermatozoa of significantly different dimensions. Head dimensions for swim-up spermatozoa from different men （4 812 cells） were similar to those in semen, differing only by 2%-5%. The values of l, Wand l/W fell within the limits given by the World Health Organization （WHO）. Although these samples were not biologically matched, linear mixed-effects statistical analyses permitted valid comparison of the groups. A subpopulation of 404 spermatozoa considered to fit the stringent criteria of WHO ‘normal＇ seminal spermatozoa from both semen and swim-up were characterized by median values （and 95% confidence intervals） of l, 4.3 μm （3.8-4.9）, W, 2.9 μm （2.6-3.3）, A, 10.2μm^2 （8.5-12.2）, P, 12.4μm （11.3-13.9）, Ac, 49% （36-60）, l/W, 1.49 （1.32-1.67） and P/A, 1.22 （1.11-1.35）. These median values fall within the 95th centile confidence limits given by WHO, but the confidence intervals for l and W were larger. Although these differences in head dimensions among men and after swim-up could be detected by CASMA, the small differences make it unlikely that technicians would be able to distinguish them. The values could be used as default sperm head values for the CASMA

De-novo malignancies carry an incidence ranging between 3%-26% after transplant and account for the second highest cause of post-transplant mortality behind cardiovascular disease. While the majority of de-novo malignancies after transplant usually consist of skin cancers, there has been an increasing rate of solid tumor cancers over the last 15 years. Although, recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is well understood among patients transplanted for HCC, there are increasing reports of de-novo HCC in those transplanted for a non-HCC indication. The proposed pathophysiology for these cases has been mainly connected to the presence of advanced graft fibrosis or cirrhosis and always associated with the presence of hepatitis B or C virus. We report the first known case of de-novo HCC in a recipient, 14 years after a pediatric living related donor liver transplantation for end-stage liver disease due to biliary atresia without the presence of hepatitis B or C virus before and after transplant. We present this case report to increase the awareness of this phenomenon and address on the utility for screening and surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma among these individuals. One recommendation is to use similar guidelines for screening, diagnosis, and treatment for HCC as those used for primary HCC in the pre-transplant patient, focusing on those recipients who have advanced fibrosis in the allograft, regardless of etiology.

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of *** effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria *** Osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/l,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,la,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/l).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other *** competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing *** to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.

Disulfiram and calcium carbimide are two alcohol deterrants widely used in alcoholism treatment, however, there exist great concerns over their safety. Reports on hepatotoxicity, mainly related to disulfiram therapy, have been published. The hepatotoxic potential of calcium carbimide is less well characterized. Here, we describe four cases of liver damage related to this therapeutic group that were submitted to a Registry of hepatotoxicity and point out the limitations that we face when prescribing these compounds. A reassessment of the role of these compounds in the management of alcohol dependence is clearly needed.

AIM: To examine renal expression of organic anion transporter 5(Oat5) and sodium-dicarboxylate cotransporter 1(Na DC1), and excretion of citrate in rats with acute extrahepatic ***: Obstructive jaundice was induced in rats by double ligation and division of the common bile duct(BDl group). Controls underwent sham operation that consisted of exposure, but not ligation, of the common bile duct(Sham group). Studies were performed 21 h after surgery. During this period, animals were maintained in metabolic cages in order to collect urine. The urinary volume was determined by gravimetry. The day of the experiment, blood samples were withdrawn and used to measure total and direct bilirubin as indicative parameters of hepatic function. Serum and urine samples were used for biochemical determinations. Immunoblotting for Oat5 and Na DC1 were performed in renal homogenates and brush border membranes from Sham and BDl rats. Immunohistochemistry studies were performed in kidneys from both experimental groups. Total RNA was extracted from rat renal tissue in order to perform reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Another set of experimental animals were used toevaluate medullar renal blood flow(m RBF) using fluorescent ***: Total and direct bilirubin levels were significantly higher in BDl animals, attesting to the adequacy of biliary obstruction. An important increase in m RBF was determined in BDl group(Sham: 0.53 ± 0.12 m l/min per 100 g body weight vs BDl: 1.58 ± 0.24 m l/min per 100 g body weight, P lume was observed in BDl animals. An important decrease in urinary levels of citrate was seen in BDl group. Besides, a decrease in urinary citrate excretion(Sham: 0.53 ± 0.11 g/g creatinine vs BDl: 0.07 ± 0.02 g/g creatinine, P l/g creatinine vs BDl: 0.21 ± 0.04 μmol/g creatinine, P l animals. We foun

UV radiation and ozonation were investigated as disinfection alternatives for the wastewater treatment plant. The inactivation of total and fecal coliforms using ozone and ultraviolet radiation as separate treatments was evaluated. Different ozone concentrations (3 to 40 mg O3/l) were applied and UV fluencies ranging from 8.5 to 12 mJ/cm2 at different pH values (from 5 to 9) were tested. Best results were obtained for ozone doses near 20 mg/min with removals of 72% and 78% of fecal and total coliforms, respectively. The ozone also was capable of oxidizing organic matter in the effluent measured as COD (the highest removal obtained was 36% for 20 mg O3/min). Maximum bacterial resistance was observed at pH 7 in both cases. The UV light offered a high bacterial inactivation (over 80%) and the lowest bacterial inactivation was observed at pH 7. Finally, we obtained the electric energy per order (EEO, kWh/m3/order), defined as the electric energy (kW-h) required to degrade a contaminant by one order of magnitude in a unit volume of contaminated water, being noteworthy that EEO values for the UV process resulted were lower than those determined for the process with ozone in all the water flow tested.

Melanocytic nevi are a transient in vivo proliferation of melanocytes that after time undergo cellular senescence. Most nevi harbor B-Raf mutations, which appear to activate cellular mechanisms of senescence in melanocytes. Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β), a critical downstream effector of the AKT signaling pathway, is involved in the development of melanoma and has been associated with senescence in melanocytes. Our immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence studies revealed distinct, perinuclear, dot-like reactivity of GSK-3β in melanocytic nevi. Furthermore, our tissue microarray analysis demonstrated significant perinuclear dot-like sublocalization of GSK-3β in melanocytic nevi compared with the amount of GSK-3β observed in melanoma (P β in human nevi may contribute to senescence in melanocytes.
