Maternal undernutrition and offspring sex determine birth-weight, postnatal development and meat characteristics in traditional swine breeds

Background: The aim of this study was to determine how maternal undernutrition during pregnancy and offspring birth-weight can affect the postnatal development of offspring under farm conditions, which may lead to consequences in its meat and carcass quality. The current study involved a total of 80 litters from Iberian sows fed a diet fulfilling daily requirements(n = 47; control) or providing 70% daily requirements(n = 33; underfed) from d 38 to d 90 of gestation when fetal tissue development begins. After birth, piglets born live were classified as low birthweight(lBW; l birth-weight(NBW; ≥1 kg). During the growing phase, 240 control and 230 underfed pigs(50% males and females) distributed by BW category and sex were studied until the ***: At birth and weaning, there were significant differences in all morphological measures and weight between NBW and lBW piglets as expected(P l feed restriction. During the growing phase, NBW pigs continued with higher weight than lBW pigs on all the days of evaluation(P l-lBW-females and lBW-males showed a catch-up growth. However, underfed pigs showed slower growth and higher feed conversion ratio than control pigs(P ld. Moreover, the average daily weight gain(ADWG) for the overall period was greater for NBW, male and control pigs than for their lBW, female and underfed pigs(P ly) and NBW pigs were slaughtered at a younger age than lBW pigs(P laughtering, control pigs also had higher carcass yield and backfat depth than underfed pigs(P l nutritional effect caused main changes in the polar lipid fraction of liver and loin. Photocatalytic performance of K2Ti6O13 whiskers to H2 evolution and CO2 photo-reduction

K2Ti6O13 whiskers were synthesized by conventional sol-gel method, sono-chemical assisted and microwave assisted sol-gel method in order to obtain catalysts with different particle sizes and to modify their optical, textural and electrochemical properties. These modifications improved their photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution and CO2 photo-reduction. long K2Ti6O13 whiskers prepared by ultrasound assisted sol-gel method are the most active photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction using pure water as reactant (U-SG, 10,065 μmol g^-1). In contrast, an opposite behavior was observed using a mixture of ethanol-water, where the highest activity was achieved by the shortest and less crystalline K2Ti6O13 whiskers (C-SG, 3,2871 μmol g^-1). In case of CO2 photo-reduction, long whiskers that were also prepared by the sono-chemical assisted sol-gel method were the most active to transform CO2 to formaldehyde, methane, methanol and hydrogen. The EFB value of this catalyst is located very close to the potential for formaldehyde production and favors the selectivity to this organic product.

Fetal vs adult mesenchymal stem cells achieve greater gene expression, but less osteoinduction

AIM: To investigate adenoviral transduction in mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) and effects on stemness in vitro and function as a cell therapy in ***: Bone marrow-derived adult and fetal MSC were isolated from an equine source and expanded in monolayer tissue culture. Polyethylenimine(PEI)-mediated transfection of pc DNA3-e GFP or adenoviral transduction of green fluorescent protein(GFP) was evaluated in fetal MSCs. Adenoviral-mediated transduction was chosen for subsequent experiments. All experiments were carried out at least in triplicate unless otherwise noted. Outcome assessment was obtained by flow cytometry or immunohystochemistry and included transduction efficiency, cell viability, stemness(i.e., cell proliferation, osteogenic and chondrogenic cell differentiation), and quantification of GFP expression. Fetal and adult MSCs were then transduced with an adenoviral vector containing the gene for the bone morphogenic protein 2(BMP2). In vitro BMP2 expression was assessed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, MSC-mediated gene delivery of BMP2 was evaluated in vivo in an osteoinduction nude mouse quadriceps model. New bone formation was evaluated by microradiography and ***: PEI provided greater transfection and viability in fetal MSCs than other commercial chemical reagents. Adenoviral transduction efficiency was superior to PEI-mediated transfection of GFP in fetal MSCs(81.3% ± 1.3% vs 35.0% ± 1.6%, P lar in adult MSCs(78.1% ± 1.9%). Expert perspectives on GIS use in Spanish geographic education

The emergence of new technological tools for territorial analysis,such as cloud-based GIS,or GIS viewers,compels us to closely examine its usefulness in geographic education. Specifically,it raises the professors and teachers’ questions: what to teach? how to teach? and what will students learn? This research responds to these three questions by interviewing Spanish experts who know how to use these tools to teach geography at university and secondary school levels. The Delphi technique was applied to achieve this,which established consensus and led to the following results from experts’ own experience: (1) that GIS help to understand territory in an experiential and non-memoristic way and (2) they enable the development of spatial thinking. This paper concludes that changes in methodologies and integrate technical knowledge into teacher training are needed.

Hepatobiliary cancers are highly lethal cancers that comprise a spectrum of invasive carcinomas originating in the liver hepatocellular carcinoma,the bile ducts intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and extrahepaticcholangiocarcinoma,the gallbladder and the ampulla of Vater(collectively known as biliary tract cancers).These tumors account for approximately 13% of all annual cancer-related deaths worldwide and for 10%-20% of deaths from hepatobiliary ***(CCA) is a devastating disease that displays a poor survival rate for which few therapeutic options are *** genetics,geographical and environmental factors,cholelithiasis,obesity,parity,and endemic infection with liver flukes have been identified as risk factors that influence the development of biliary tract *** important factors affecting the carcinogenesis of these tumors include chronic inflammation,obstruction of the bile ducts,and impaired bile *** has been suggested that CCA is caused by infection with Helicobacter species,such as Helicobacter bilis and Helicobacter hepaticus,in a manner that is similar to the reported role of Helicobacter pylori in distal gastric *** to the difficulty in culturing these Helicobacter species,molecular methods,such as polymerase chain reaction and sequencing,or immunologic assays have become the methods of choice for ***,clinical studies of benign or malignant biliary tract diseases revealed remarkable variability in the methods and the findings,and the use of uniform and validated techniques is needed.

Hydrogen production by catalytic decomposition of methane using a Fe-based catalyst in a fluidized bed reactor

Catalytic decomposition of methane using a Fe-based catalyst for hydrogen production has been studied in this work. A Fe/Al2O3 catalyst previously developed by our research group has been tested in a fluidized bed reactor （FBR）. A parametric study ot the effects of some process variables, including reaction temperature and space velocity, is undertaken. The operating conditions strongly affect the catalyst performance. Methane conversion was increased by increasing the temperature and lowering the space velocity. Using temperatures between 700 and 900℃ and space velocities between 3 and 6 lN/（gcat·h）, a methane conversion in the range of 25%-40% for the gas exiting the reactor could be obtained during a 6 h run. In addition, carbon was deposited in the form of nanofilaments （chain like nanofibers and multiwall nanotubes） with similar properties to those obtained in a fixed bed reactor.

The biodiversity of myxomycetes in central Chile

The results obtained from two expeditions to survey the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Central Chile are reported in this *** surveys were carried out as part of Global Biodiversity of Eumycetozoans project funded by the National Science Foundation(USA)and the Myxotropic project funded by the Spanish *** expeditions were made to the temperate zone of the central part of the country between 23°and 39°South latitudes,which is characterized by Mediterranean vegetation,as well as to the transition areas between the arid and semi-arid regions of northern Chile,and the humid,cold Valdivian and Andean-Patagonian forests of the far *** of the fifteen regions of the country,from Antofagasta to Araucanía,in selected areas where the native vegetation is well preserved,were included in these *** 600 collections were obtained,and a total of 110 species of myxomycetes representing 29 genera have been *** of these(Dianema succulenticola,Didymium chilense)are species new to science and are described in this paper,12 species(Collaria nigricapillitia,Comatricha alta,Cribraria oregana,Dianema depressum,Didymium eximium,***,Enerthenema melanospermum,lepidoderma chailletii,Macbrideola ovoidea,Physarum clavisporum,*** and Trichia alpina)were previously unknown for either the Neotropics or South America,and 49 additional species are new records for *** are provided on the morphology,distribution and ecology of selected species and light and SEM micrographs of the most significant species are *** evaluation of the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Chile,with special emphasis on the endemic plants that provided the substrates with which they were associated,and a comparative analysis of our results with those from other countries of South America is presented.

Background:The corneal cross-linking(CXl)photochemical reaction is essentially dependent on oxygen and hypothermia,which usually leads to higher dissolved oxygen levels in tissues,with potentially greater oxygen availability for ***,we evaluate whether a reduction of corneal temperature during CXl may increase oxygen availability and therefore enhance the CXl biomechanical stiffening effect in ex vivo porcine ***:One hundred and twelve porcine corneas had their epithelium manually debrided before being soaked with 0.1%hypo-osmolaric *** corneas were equally assigned to one of four *** 2 and 4 underwent accelerated epithelium-off CXl using 9 mW/cm^(2) irradiance for 10 min,performed either in a cold room temperature(group 2,4℃)or at standard room temperature(group 4,24℃).Groups 1 and 3 served as non-crosslinked,temperature-matched *** a stress-strain extensometer,the elastic moduli of 5-mm wide corneal strips were analyzed as an indicator of corneal ***:Accelerated epithelium-off CXl led to significant increases in the elastic modulus between 1 and 5%of strain when compared to non-cross-linked controls(Pl groups(P=0.846)or between groups in which CXl was performed at low or standard room temperature(P=0.969).Conclusions:Although initial oxygen availability should be increased under hypothermic conditions,it does not appear to play a significant role in the biomechanical strengthening effect of epithelium-off CXl accelerated protocols in ex vivo porcine corneas.
