Simulation Tools for a Fiber-Optic Based Structural Health Monitoring System

Optimized combinations of statins and azoles against Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts in vitro

Objective: To evaluate the combination of several statins(atorvastatin, fluvastatin and simvastatin) and azoles(voriconazole, posaconazole and itraconazole) against Acanthamoeba spp. Methods: The efficiency of the different drug combinations against the trophozoite stage of different Acanthamoeba strains were evaluated by Alamar Blue assay. Effect on the cyst stage was observed by inverted microscope. Cytotoxicity of combinations of azoles and statins was evaluated by measuring the release of lactate dehydrogenase from a murine macrophage cell line. Results: Combinations of any of the tested statins and voriconazole or posaconazole were more efficient in inhibiting Acanthamoeba compared to statins or azoles individually. The drug combinations at the combined inhibitory concentrations 50% showed lower toxicity compared to that of the compounds ***: The combinations of statins together with voriconazole and posaconazole are more efficient than these drugs alone, and these combinations have lower cytotoxicity in mammalian cell lines.

Natural sediment at a dam and its inorganic materials as adsorbents of praseodymium(Pr(Ⅲ))

The sediment deposited behind a dam(DS) and its inorganic materials(IM-DS) were characterized and used for the removal of praseodymium(Pr) from aqueous solutions. Quartz, albite, and kaolinite were found in the sediment by X-ray diffraction. Kinetic data fit well to a pseudo second-order model, the equilibrium time for DS and IM-DS was 2 h and 3 min, respectively, and the adsorption capacity was higher for Pr/DS(qe= 4.91 mg/g) than for Pr/IM-DS(qe= 3.01 mg/g) in these conditions. Pr/DS and Pr/IM-DS data isotherms were in agreement with the langmuir-Freundlich model and the maximum adsorption capacities were 4.95 and 4.01 mg/g, respectively. Both processes are exothermic(enthalpy change, ΔH0=-22.8 and-21.8 k J/mol for DS and IM-DS, respectively), the increase of the randomness is small, and the feasibility and spontaneity are low. Praseodymium was desorbed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium(EDTA-Na2), sodium chloride, nitric, citric, and humic acids solutions, and one hundred percent of praseodymium was desorbed by the EDTA-Na2solution. The Pr2(EDTA)3(praseodymium ethylenediaminetetraacetate) complex was completely desorbed from both materials(DS and IM-DS). Distribution coefficients(KD) depend upon praseodymium concentration,temperature, p H, and the kind of adsorbent. Chemical reactions of praseodymium with kaolinite and iron minerals could explain the adsorption.

CD74 is a protein whose initial role in antigen presentation was recognized two decades ago. Recent studies have revealed that it has additional functions as a receptor for macrophage migration inhibitory factor and as a receptor for an important human pathogen, Helicobacter pylori （H pylon）. The role of CD74 as a receptor is important because after binding of migration inhibitory factor or H pylori, NF-κB and Erkl/2 activation occurs, along with the induction of proinflammatory cytokine secretion. This review provides an up-to-date account of the functions of CD74 and how it might be involved in inflammation and cancer within the gastrointestinal tract.

The aim of this paper is to defend a view of the philosophy of science as a practice that should reflect not only about the disciplinary classical topics: science methodology, the practice of model construction, explanation or relations with technology. Philosophy of science should reflect also on the directions science might take and the goals sought, and ponder;as well, must include questions concerning who should make these decisions and in accordance with what procedures to promote a more inclusive and democratic science. It’s an agenda that includes gender and ethical topics and a commitment with responsible research and innovation in the context of our democratic societies.

Poor student achievement is often attributed to a lack of motivation and *** with learning disabilities are very often unmotivated because school is one failure after another to *** are having a hard time assessing what could be the aid for language *** study used the descriptive-survey research *** is arranged to gather information about the present existing *** participants of this study consisted of 40 grade nine students from Mariveles National High School-Sisiman II *** questionnaire was divided into five parts—(A)Self Efficacy,(B)Intrinsic Motivation,(C)English learning Value,(D)Performance Goal,and(E)Achievement *** on this study’s findings,some relevant and useful motivational learning implications are recommended for enhancement and improvement of the students’*** language improvement programs and activities are also discussed in accordance with the students’language difficulties as communicated in the open-ended questions to increase their motivation in English language learning.
