In Vivo Preliminary Study on Bone neoformation Behavior of Three Types of Calcium Phosphate Bioceramics

Calcium phosphate microporous bioceramics and biphasic compositions of hydroxyapatite and β-calcium phosphate, in the form of microporous granular biomaterials, are research topics and present themselves as potential orthopedic and biomedical applications in rebuilding and repairing maxillofacial bones and tooth structure. This is associated with the characteristics of microstructure, biocompatibility, bioactivity and bone conductivity properties which these materials offer when applied in vivo or in a simulation environment. This study aimed to assess the behavior of bone neoformation of three types of calcium phosphate biomaterials in in vivo tests with sheep within 60 and 90 days, with the help of a scanning electron microscope. The biomaterials used were provided by the Group of Biomaterials at the Santa Catarina State University. The in vivo tests were carried out by generating, on sheep, tibial bone defects, three of which were filled with biomaterial (one different biomaterial for each bone defect generated), whilst the fourth received a bone fragment obtained during the generation of the defect in question, to serve as a control group. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique was used for carrying out the preliminary characterization studies so as to observe new bone formation and osseointegration. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) served as a support for the characterization of crystalline phases. The results obtained are encouraging and show that the biomaterials presented good performance in the process of bone formation, biomaterial osseointegration by a new tissue and bone mineralization.

Melanoma involving the ileum: Report of a case and review of literature

Malignant melanoma accounts for less than 3% of all gastrointestinal tract malignancies, and it is mainly metastatic in origin. In contrast, primary melanoma of the small bowel is an extremely rare entity. We report the case of a 34-year-old male who was diagnosed with melanoma involving the ileum most likely secondary in origin. histologically, the neoplastic cells involved the entire wall thickness, showed nuclear pleomorphism, nuclear pseudoinclusions, abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and were immunoreactive for S100, hMB45, and Melan-A. Electron microscopy showed electron-dense complexes that suggested aggregates of melanin. The final diagnosis was given based on the clinical, radiologic and histopathologic correlation. This case demonstrates the need of clinical and histological immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular studies together to make a correct diagnosis of spindle cell and epithelioid tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.

The physical and electrical properties of lanthanum doped Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3 ceramic sheets(PlZT)which were prepared by tape casting method were carried *** casting of lanthanum modified PZT was performed using commercial cellulose acetate binders and poly(ethylene glycol)plasticizers in ethanol *** from these slips were casted on a polymer *** PlZT green tapes were stacked for 5 units and sintered in air at 1050℃ for 1 h with heating rate 5℃/*** micrographs show that the tape is dense(90.26% of theoretical density)and rather uniform with grain size of approximately 1.1 ?*** dielectric permittivity and loss tangent of PlZT ceramics as a function of temperature at 1 khz suggest that the compounds exhibit a phase transition of diffuse *** transition temperature(T_m)and piezoelectric coefficient(d_ 33)were 110℃ and 117 pC/n,respectively.

Effects of Grape Processing on Antioxidant Capacity and ESI-MS Fingerprints of Grape Products

The antioxidant capacity and changes in chemical composition of two grape varieties, the new hybrid BRS-Carmem and the Bord6 grape （Vitis labrusca） and of their products （juice, wine and vinegar） were evaluated by several techniques. The DPPh method was used to measure the antioxidant capacity, whereas, the total phenolic contents （TPC） were measured by Folin-Ciocalteau method. Overall chemical composition was also monitored by ESI-MS fingerprints and UPlC-MS analysis. For both grape varieties, the highest （and similar） antioxidant capacity and TPC were observed for the wine and vinegar samples followed by the grapes and then the juices. In addition, ESI-MS fingerprints and UPlC-MS analysis in the negative ion mode indicated substantial changes in chemical composition from grape to juice and wine, and then to vinegar.

A high-strength and high-toughness nacreous structure in a deep-sea nautilus shell:Critical role of platelet geometry and organic matrix

To explore the differences in mechanical behavior of nacre between shells that live in different water depths,the microstructures,phase composition and related mechanical properties of nacre under indentation,three-point bending and shear tests in deep-sea nautilus and freshwater Cristaria plicata shells were systematically *** is found that the nacreous structure in nautilus shell exhibits an outstanding combination of high strength and high toughness compared with that in *** shell,attributing to its larger aspect ratio of platelet and interfacial shear ***,the interfacial resistance is mainly generated from the adhesion of organic matrix and friction caused by nano-asperities on platelet *** to the interfacial resistance model,the stiction force originated from organic matrix adhesion is sensitive to its content,and the friction force produced by nano-asperities presents a positive correlation with their distribution density and ***,the higher content of organic matrix of nacre with denser and larger nano-asperities on platelet surfaces in nautilus shell contributes to a higher interfacial ***,it is the coupled effects of platelet geometries(*** ratio and nano-asperity)and organic matrix that result in the high-strength and high-toughness nacreous structure in nautilus shell,which is thus more conductive to inhabit in the deep sea with extremely high *** present research findings are expected to provide beneficial references for the design of strong and tough nacre-inspired materials with appropriate platelet geometry and content of soft phase.

The future experimental campaign with the SAMURAI setup at RIKEn will explore a wide range of neutron-deficient nuclei with a particular focus on the most critical(p, γ) reaction rates relevant to the astrophysical rp-process in type-I X-ray bursts(XRB). Intense radioactive-ion(RI) beams at an energy of a few hundred Me V/nucleon will be deployed to populate proton-unbound states in the nuclei of interest through the Coulomb excitation or nucleon-removal processes. The decay of these states into a proton and a heavy residue will be measured using complete kinematics and the information about time reversal proton-capture process will be obtained. This method will provide the vital experimental data on the resonances, which dominate the stellar(p, γ) reaction rates, as well as on the direct proton-capture process for some other cases. The experimental setup will utilize for the first time the high-Resolution90?-mode of the SAMURAI spectrometer in combination with the existing detection systems, including custom-designed Si-strip detectors for simultaneous detection and tracking of heavy ions and protons emitted from the target. The details of the experimental method and the utilized apparatus are discussed in this paper.

Characteristic-based operator-splitting finite element method for navier-Stokes equations

A new finite element method, which is the characteristic-based operator-splitting (CBOS) algorithm, is developed to solve navier-Stokes (n-S) equations. In each time step, the equations are split into the diffusive part and the convective part by adopting the operator-splitting algorithm. For the diffusive part, the temporal discretization is performed by the backward difference method which yields an implicit scheme and the spatial discretization is performed by the standard Galerkin method. The convective part can be discretized using the characteristic Galerkin method and solved explicitly. The driven square flow and backward-facing step flow are conducted to validate the model. It is shown that the numerical results agree well with the standard solutions or existing experimental data, and the present model has high accuracy and good stability. It provides a prospective research method for solving n-S equations.
