Approximately 2,000,000 people are exposed to volcanic risks in communities situated at the flanks of Mounts Cameroon (MC) and Nyiragongo (MN) volcanoes in Central Africa. This study therefore sought to investigate risk perception from four previous eruptions of MC, namely the 1959, 1982, 1999, and 2000 eruptions;and two previous eruptions of MN: 1977 and 2002. The study was initiated with co-design workshops held with major stakeholders in the cities of Buea and Goma at the flanks of MC and MN, respectively, in 2017, to develop the research objectives for the study. A non-random questionnaire survey was later conducted within 14 and 15 communities in Buea and Goma respectively, on the effects, perceived risks, and coping strategies for the chosen eruptions. Three age groups (18 - 30, 31 - 45 and >45 years) and gender (male and female) were considered. The population at the flanks of both volcanoes cited scientific and indigenous factors to be responsible for eruptions from these volcanoes. At MC and MN, ≥45% of the sampled participants (with a higher female population) perceived that the sampled eruptions posed a very high risk to the population. In terms of the effects, the age group of 18 - 30 was the least knowledgeable. In terms of direct effect on persons, over 90% of participants at MC and MN attested that they were overcome by fear/panic. On measures to cope with any likely eruption, the following order was established at the flanks of both volcanoes: sensitization of population, use of religious (prayers) and of traditional/indigenous strategies. In terms of future coping strategies, while the males at MC maintained sensitization as the favourite option, 62% of the males at MN opted for traditional/indigenous strategies. The female population at both MC and MN showed a higher preference for religious strategies like prayers.

In this study presented the algorithm proposed involves the coupled solution of 3-D unsteady flow through a turbine stage and the dynamics problem for rotor-blade motion by the action of aerodynamic forces, without separating the outer and inner flow fluctuations. The partially integrated method involves the solution of the fluid and structural equations separately, but information is exchanged at each time step, so that solution from one domain is used as a boundary condition for the other domain. 3-D transonic gas flow through the stator and rotor blades in relative motion with periodicity on the whole annulus is described by the unsteady Euler conservation equations, which are integrated using the explicit monotonous finite-volume difference scheme of Godunov-Kolgan. The structural analysis uses the modal approach and a 3-D finite element model of a blade. A calculation has been done for the last stage of the steam turbine, under design and off-design regimes. It is shown that the amplitude-frequency spectrum of blade oscillations contains the high frequency harmonics, corresponding to the rotor moving past one stator blade pitch, and low frequency harmonics caused by blade oscillations and flow nonuniformity downstream from the blade row; moreover, the spectrum involves the harmonics which are not multiples of the rotation frequency.

高活性MOF基催化剂的设计和合成为促进动力学不利的氧还原反应(ORR)过程开辟了新的途径.本研究通过在ZIF-8前驱体表面涂覆二茂铁甲酸,然后进行两步炭化工艺,设计和制备了一种具有新型结构的高效电催化剂,以提高ORR性能.两步炭化过程对于将热解Fe_(3)C纳米颗粒封装到碳纳米管(CNTs)中以及将Fe单原子隔离到N掺杂碳(NC)基体上至关重要.此外,Fe元素的相对含量对优化催化剂的ORR性能至关重要.所制得Fe_(3)C@CNTs/NC-M催化剂结构先进,在碱性溶液中表现出良好的长期稳定性和电催化ORR性能,其半波电位和极限电流分别达到0.941 v和6.31 mA cm^(-2).此外,该电催化剂在甲醇溶液中具有较强的耐受性和良好的稳定性.Fe_(3)C@CNTs/NC-M锌空气电池(ZAB)具有1.525 v的开路电位,420 mA cm^(-2)时的峰值功率密度为348 mW cm^(-2),10 mA cm^(-2)时的最大容量为843 mA h g_(Zn)^(-1).因此,这种合成策略为构建具有有效和稳定的ORR性能的MOF基电催化材料提供了一条有效途径.

The components of proton exchange membrane water electrolysers frequently experience corrosion issues, especially at high anodic polarization, that restrict the use of more affordable alternatives to titanium. Here, we investigate localized corrosion processes of bare and Ti-coated AISI 446 ferritic stainless steel under anodic polarization by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in sodium sulphate and potassium chloride solutions. SECM approach curves and area scans measured at open-circuit potential (OCP) of the samples in the feedback mode using a redox mediator evidence a negative feedback effect caused by the surface passive film. For the anodic polarization of the sample, the substrate generation-tip collection mode enables to observe local generation of iron (II) ions, as well as formation of molecular oxygen. For the uncoated AISI 446 sample, localized corrosion is detected in sodium sulphate solution simultaneously with oxygen formation at anodic potentials of 1.0 v vs. Ag/AgCl, whereas significant pitting corrosion is observed even at 0.2 v vs. Ag/AgCl in potassium chloride solution. The Ti-coated AISI 446 sample reveals enhanced corrosion resistance in both test solutions, without any evidence of iron (II) ions generation at anodic potentials of 1.2 v vs. Ag/AgCl, where only oxygen formation is observed.

Protective Composite Coatings Formed on Mg Alloy Surface by PEO Using Organofluorine Materials

The results of the surface modification of magnesium alloys by plasma electrolytic oxidation（PEO） and subsequent treatment in suspension of the superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene（SPTFE） or telomeric solution of tetrafluoroethylene（TFE） are presented. Composite coatings have been obtained by dipping with subsequent heat treatment. Electrochemical, tribological properties and wettability of protective composite coatings have been investigated. Composite coatings formed on PEO-layer by fourfold treatment of samples in SPTFE suspension possess best protective properties. The obtained coatings decrease the corrosion current density（5.4 × 10^（-11） A cm^（-2）） and wear（7.6 × 10^（-7）mm^3（Nm）^（-1））, and increase the polarisation resistance（1.7 × 10~9 cm^2） and impedance modulus（1.9 × 10~9 cm^2） by orders of magnitude in comparison with unprotected magnesium alloy and base PEO-coating. The highest value of contact angle（CA） has been obtained for coatings with triple application in telomeric solution. CA for such composite coatings attains（171 ± 2）？, as the result of multimodal roughness of the composite coating＇s surface.

Increased penetration of wind energy systems has serious concerns on power system stability. In spite of several advantages, doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind energy systems are very sensitive to grid disturbances. DFIG system with conventional vector control is not robust to disturbances as it is based on PI controllers. The objective of this paper is to design a new vector control that is robust to external disturbances. To achieve this, inner current loop of the conventional vector control is replaced with sliding mode control. In order to avoid chattering effect and achieve finite time convergence, the control gains are selected based on positive semi-definite barrier function. The proposed barrier function adaptive sliding mode (BFASMC) is evaluated by testing it on a benchmark multi-machine power system model under various operating conditions. The simulated results show that the proposed method is robust to various disturbances.
