Biodiversity and distribution of benthic dinoflagellates in tropical Zhongsha Islands,South China Sea

Benthic dinoflagellates have attracted increasing attention in recent years because of their toxicity and ability to form extensive harmful algal *** producing palytoxin and its analogs,Gambierdiscus producing ciguatera toxins,and Prorocentrum producing okadaic acid and dinophysis toxins,have been concerned as serious human *** explored the benthic dinoflagellate biodiversity and distribution characteristics of a series of tropical reefs in 20-40-m water depth in wet season in the Zhongsha Islands in South China Sea using morphological,phylogenetic,and cell counting *** show that benthic dinoflagellates in the islands are rich in biodiversity and 15 species from genera Amphidinium,Coolia,Ostreopsis,and Prorocentrum were identifi ed:Amphidinium carterae,***,***,***,Coolia canariensis,***,***,***,Ostreopsis ***,Prorocentrum concavum,***,***,*** fmannianum,***,and *** them,*** is reported for the first time in Chinese *** abundance of benthic dinoflagellates was relatively low at 88-4345 cells/100 cm^(2) on sediment and 10-91 cells/g on *** and Amphidinium were the dominant and subdominant genera,*** is speculated that the low abundance of benthic dinoflagellates is closely related to the scarcity of macroalgae and stronger water motion at the depth>15 m in Zhongsha *** study expanded the study in biodiversity of benthic dinoflagellates in Chinese waters,and revealed the distribution characteristics of harmful benthic microalgae in reef habitats.

OTX2 stimulates adult retinal ganglion cell regeneration

Retinal ganglion cell(RGC) axons provide the only link between the light sensitive and photon transducing neural retina and visual centers of the *** axon degeneration occurs in a number of blinding diseases and the ability to stimulate axon regeneration from surviving ganglion cells could provide the anatomic substrate for restoration of ***2 is a homeoprotein transcription factor expressed in the retina and previous studies showed that,in response to stress,exogenous OTX2 increases the in vitro and in vivo survival of *** we examined and quantified the effects of OTX2 on adult RGC axon regeneration in vitro and in *** results show that exogenous OTX2 stimulates the regrowth of axons from RGCs in cultures of dissociated adult retinal cells and from explants of adult retinal tissue and that RGCs respond directly to OTX2 as regrowth is observed in cultures of purified adult rat ***,after nerve crush in vivo,we observed a positive effect of OTX2 on the number of regenerating axons up to the optic chiasm within 14 days post crush and a very modest level of acuity absent in control *** effect of OTX2 on RGC survival and regeneration is of potential interest for degenerative diseases affecting this cell *** animal procedures were approved by the local "Comié d'éιthique en expérimentation animale n°59" and authorization n° 00702.01 delivered March 28,2014 by the French "Ministére de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche".

Generalized design of tunable 3D polarized optical multi-focal spots array

We report a generally designed optical modulation method to garner the tunable three-dimensional(3D) polarized optical multi-focal spots arrays in the focusing system of high numerical aperture(NA) objective lens, and it has good compatibility with vector beams of different polarization states. Based on the vector angular spectrum theory and Fourier transform, the vector light fields of Gaussian beam, Bessel-Gaussian(BG) beam and laguerre-Gaussian(lG) beam are modulated with the generally designed multi-focal spots phase filter(MSPF). Meanwhile, a generally designed sidelobe suppression transmission(SST) function is employed to reduce the interference effect of the adjacent focal spots in the arrays. Thus, the one-dimensional(1D) axial multi-focal spots array and the 3D multi-focal spots arrays with high spatial resolution can be generated. The MSPF is flexible and reliable in modulating various vector beams, and exhibiting high tunability for the number(3, 12, 21), spacing(4λ—11.3λ) and spatial distribution(1D—3D) of focal spots in the array. With the generally designed MSPF, the generation of multi-focus array is promoted to be more universal and flexible and shows potential application prospects in femtosecond laser multi-beam parallel processing, particle capture, as well as high-density data storage.

Flow Characteristics of Crude Oil with High Water Fraction during Non-heating Gathering and Transportation

In order to ensure the safety of the non-heating gathering and transportation processes for high water fraction crude oil,the effect of temperature,water fraction,and flow rate on the flow characteristics of crude oil with high water fraction was studied in a flow experimental system of the X *** distinct flow patterns were identified by the photographic and local sampling ***,three new flow patterns were found to occur below the pour point of crude oil,including EW/O&W stratified flow with gel deposition,EW/O&W intermittent flow with gel deposition,and water single-phase flow with gel ***,two characteristic temperatures,at which the change rate of pressure drop had changed obviously,were found during the change of pressure *** characteristic temperature of the first congestion of gel deposition in the pipeline was determined to be the safe temperature for the non-heating gathering and transportation of high water cut crude oil,while the pressure drop reached the peak at this *** empirical formula for the safe temperature was established for oil-water flow with high water fraction/low fluid production *** results can serve as a guide for the safe operation of the non-heating gathering and transportation of crude oil in high water fraction oilfields.

Comparing surface erosion processes in four soils from the loess Plateau under extreme rainfall events

This research aims to improve erosion control practice in the loess Plateau,by studying the surface erosion processes,including splash,sheet/interrill and rill erosion in four contrasting soils under high rainfall intensity(120 mm h^(−1))with three-scale indoor artificial *** contrasting soils as sandy loam,sandy clay loam,clay loam and loamy clay were collected from different parts of the loess *** results showed that sediment load was significantly impacted by soil properties in all three *** rate(4.0-21.6 g m^(−2∙)min^(−1))was highest in sandy loam from the north part of the loess Plateau and showed a negative power relation with the mean weight diameter of aggregates after 20 min of rainfall *** average sediment load by sheet/interrill erosion(6.94-42.86 g m^(−2∙)min^(−1))was highest in clay loam from middle part of the loess Plateau,and the stable sediment load after 20 min showed a positive power relation with the silt content in *** average sediment load increased dramatically by rill and interrill erosion(21.03-432.16 g m^(−2∙)min^(−1)),which was highest in loamy clay from south part of the loess *** average sediment load after the occurrence of rill showed a positive power relation with clay content and a negative power relation with soil organic matter *** impacts of slope gradient on the runoff rate and sediment load also changed with soil *** critical factors varied for different processes,which were the aggregate size for splash erosion,the content of silt particles and slope gradient for sheet/interrill erosion,and the content of clay particles,soil organic matter and slope gradient for rill *** on the results of the experiments,specific erosion control practices were proposed by targeting certain erosion processes in areas with different soil texture and different distribution of slope *** findings from this study should support the improvement of erosion

The resorption of nutrients by plants before litter fall and the mineralization of nutrients from plant litter by soil processes are both important pathways supporting primary productivity. While the positive relationship between plant biodiversity and primary productivity is widely accepted for natural ecosystems, the roles of nutrient resorption and mineralization in mediating that relationship remains largely unknown. Here, we quantified the relative importance of nitrogen(N) resorption and N mineralization in driving plant community N investment and the correlation between species diversity and community productivity along an N-limited successional chronosequence of the mixed broadleaved–Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis) forest in northeastern China. leaf N resorption efficiency(NRE) at the community level increased significantly along the successional chronosequence,whereas litter N mineralization rate decreased significantly. leaf NRE was more important than litter N mineralization rate in driving the diversity–productivity relationship. However, higher leaf NRE led to less N mineralization as succession progressed along the chronosequence. Our results highlight the importance of the N resorption pathway rather than the N mineralization pathway for forest N acquisition with community succession,and they provide mechanistic insights into the positive effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning. In future forest management practices, we recommend appropriate application of N fertilizer to mitigate the adverse effects of N-poor soil on seedling regeneration during late succession and thus maintain the sustainable development of temperate forest ecosystems.

Using miniaturized GPS archival tags to assess home range features of a small plunge-diving bird:the European Kingfisher(Alcedo atthis)

Background:The European Kingfisher(Alcedo atthis)is a small plunge-diving bird,today considered a species of conservation concern in Europe given its rapid population decline observed across the *** implemented a pilot study aimed at providing first data allowing to:(1)assess home range features of the European Kingfisher for populations with unevenly distributed feeding habitats;(2)define conservation implications for habitats exploited by such populations;and(3)evaluate possibilities for developing GPS tracking schemes dedicated to home range stud-ies for this species that could be possibly applied to other small plunge-diving ***:In 2018 and 2019,we equipped 16 breeding European Kingfishers sampled within the marshes of the Gironde Estuary(France),with miniaturized and waterproof GPS archival tags deployed with leg-loop harnesses(total equipment mass=1.4 g;average bird mass=40.18±1.12 g).Results:On average,we collected 35.31±6.66 locations usable for analyses,without a significant effect on bird body condition(n=13 tags retrieved).Data analyses highlighted rather limited home ranges exploited by birds(aver-age=2.50±0.55 ha),composed on average by 2.78±0.40 location *** results also underscore:(1)a rather important home range fragmentation index(0.36±0.08);and(2)the use by birds of different types of small wetlands(wet ditches,small ponds or small waterholes),often exploited in addition to habitats encompassing nest ***:Our study reveals interesting GPS tracking possibilities for small plunge-diving birds such as the European *** this species,today classified as vulnerable in Europe,our results underline the importance of developing conservation and ecological restoration policies for wetland networks that would integrate small wet-lands particularly sensitive to global change.

Recently,by intercalating organic ions into bulk FeSe superconductors,two kinds of layered FeSe-based superconductors[(TBA)xFeSe and(CTA)xFeSe]with superconducting transition temperatures(Tc)above 40 K have been *** to the large interlayer distance(~15A),these new layered superconductors have a large resistivity anisotropy analogous to bismuth-based cuprate ***,remarkable pseudogap behavior well above Tcis revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)measurements on77Se nuclei,suggesting a preformed pairing scenario similar to that of ***,we report another new kind of organic-ion-intercalated FeSe superconductor,(PY)xFeSe,with a reduced interlayer distance(~10A)compared to(TBA)xFeSe and(CTA)*** performing77Se NMR and transport measurements,we observe a similar pseudogap behavior well above Tcof~40 K and a large resistivity anisotropy of~10~4 in(PY)*** these facts strongly support a universal pseudogap behavior in these layered FeSe-based superconductors with quasi-two-dimensional electronic structures.

Oxidation,Mechanical and Tribological Behaviors of the Ni/cBN Abrasive Coating-Coated Titanium Alloys

In order to improve the oxidation and wear resistance of blades tip of titanium alloys as well as the sealing performance of the gas turbine engine,a Ni/cBN abrasive coating was prepared on titanium alloys through composite ***,mechanical and tribological properties of the abrasive coating were ***,the effect of the oxidation on the mechanical and tribological properties was also *** results revealed that the abrasive coating underwent slight oxidation within 700℃.Meanwhile,some intermetallic compounds,Ni3Ti,NiTi and NiTi2,were formed at the coating/substrate interface during *** to the pinning effect of cBN particles and the different thermal expansion coefficients of the coating and substrate,the coating/substrate interface was cracked after oxidation at 700℃.Tensile results showed that the presence of coating reduced the strength of the alloy significantly at room temperature,while only marginal variations of the strength of the coated and uncoated specimens at elevated ***,the wear tests indicated that the coating had the excellent cutting ability and wear resistance,which can effectively protect the blades tip of titanium *** the temperature increased,the wear resistance decreased due to the decrease in the mechanical properties of the Ni/cBN coating.
