The present work covers the preparation of carbon-based nanosorbents by ethylene decomposition on stainless steel mesh without the use of external catalyst for the treatment of water containing nickel ions （Ni2＋）. The reaction temperature was varied from 650 to 850℃, while reaction time and ethylene to nitrogen flow ratio were maintained at 30 rain and 1：1 cma/min, respectively. Results show that nanosorbents synthesised at a reaction temperature of 650℃ had the smallest average diameter （75 nm）, largest BET surface area （68.95 m2/g） and least amount of impurity （0.98 wt.% Fe）. A series of batch sorption tests were performed to evaluate the effects of initial pH, initial metal concentration and contact time on Ni2~ removal by the nanosorbents. The equilibrium data fitted well to Freundlich isotherm. The kinetic data were best correlated to a pseudo second-order model indicating that the process was of chemisorption type. Further analysis by the Boyd kinetic model revealed that boundary layer diffusion was the controlling step. This primary study suggests that the prepared material with Freundiich constants compared well with those in the literature, is a promising sorbent for the sequestration of Ni2＋ in aqueous solutions.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATlAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATlAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

As the only mammalian group capable of powered flight,bats have many unique biological *** comparative genomic studies in bats have focused on long-term ***,the microevolutionary processes driving recent evolution are largely *** resequencing data from 50 black flying foxes(pteropus alecto),one of the model species for bats,we find that black flying fox has much higher genetic diversity and lower levels of linkage disequilibrium than most of the mammalian *** inference reveals strong population fluctuations(>100 fold)coinciding with multiple historical events including the last glacial change and Toba super eruption,suggesting that the black flying fox is a very resilient species with strong recovery *** long-term adaptation in the black flying fox is enriched in metabolic genes,recent adaptation in the black flying fox has a unique landscape where recently selected genes are not strongly enriched in any functional *** demographic history and mode of adaptation suggest that black flying fox might be a well-adapted species with strong evolutionary *** together,this study unravels a vibrant landscape of recent evolution for the black flying fox and sheds light on several unique evolutionary processes for bats comparing to other mammalian groups.

Iodization of Village Water Supply in the Control of Endemic Iodine Deficiency in Rural Sarawak, Malaysia

A simple water iodizing system, which incorporates the Venturi principle in combination with the controlled release mechanism of a silicone-sodium iodide elastomer, for the iodization of rural piped-water supply in the control of endemic iodine deficiency has been developed and its effectiveness evaluated in three Iban longhouse villages in the iodinedeficient district of lubok Antu, Sarawak. Urines were collected for iodine assays from women aged 15-40 years before and at 6 and 12 months after the connection of the iodinating device; goiter assessment was performed on the women at the start and end of the 1-year study. Water samples were collected for iodine assays at 2-weekly intervals. In all three villages, significant and sustained increases in median urinary iodine excretions,reaching levels recommended for an iodine-suffcient population, were observed; goitre prevalences were reduced in all the villages (by 22.6% to 35.8%). The iodine levels in the water ranged from 34 μg/l to 212 μg/l. In the control village, median urinary iodine excretions remained essentially unchanged but a small increase in goiter prevalence was observed. The iodized water was well received by the villagers and no adverse effects of water iodization were observed. The system functioned unattended throughout the one year period. The cost of providing supplemental iodine via the iodizing device is approximately 60 cents (U.S.) per family per year which is affordable by either the Government or the villagers. It is concluded that the iodizing system offers a new cost-effective strategy for the control of endemic iodine deficiency in Sarawak and may have applications in other areas with similar water sources

An earlier study manipulated the Butler-Volmer equation to effectively model a lithium-ion capacitor’s (lIC) energy storage as a function of its constituent components and charge current. However, this model had several shortcomings: computed temperature values were too low, voltage was inaccurate, and the model required Warburg impedance values that were two orders of magnitude higher than experimental results. This study began by analyzing the model’s temperature and voltage computations in order to justify output values. Ultimately, these justifications failed. Therefore, in situ temperature rise was measured during charge cycles. Experimental results indicated that temperature increases minimally during a charge cycle (·kgp>-1p>) temperature increase is negligible. After it was found that lIC temperature change is minimal during a charge cycle, the model accurately computed lIC voltage during the charge cycle and computed Warburg impedance that agreed with values derived from earlier experimental studies, even falling within the measurements’ precision error.

Observations on Arrhenius Degradation of lithium-Ion Capacitors

Earlier research determined that lithium-ion capacitor (lIC) cycle life degradation can be accelerated by elevated temperature. lIC cycle life degradation can be described by an Arrhenius equation. This study performed cycle life testing at a constant temperature but varied cycle current. The results were described by an Arrhenius equation relying upon the number of cycles and a constant, which was determined by cycle current. Using mathematical derivations and experimental results, the researchers quantified the effects of activation energy and temperature upon this constant. Because cell temperature is nearly constant during cycles, it was deduced that elevated cycle current decreases activation energy. This lower activation energy then accelerates degradation. Thus this research demonstrates that cycle current ages lICs through its effects on their activation energies.

Objectives: To determine the cytotoxicity of crude ethanolic extract, n-butanol fraction and aqueous fraction on selected cancer cell lines, and to observe the morphological changes of the cancer cells treated with n-butanol ***: The cytotoxic effect of n-butanol fraction, crude ethanolic extract and aqueous fraction on breast cancer(MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231), colon cancer(HT29), lung cancer(A549), cervical cancer(He la) and normal mouse fibroblast(3T3) cell lines was determined using MTT assay. The morphological changes of the treated cells were observed under an inverted light ***: n-Butanol fraction was the most cytotoxic towards HT29 and MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner compared to crude ethanolic extract and aqueous fraction(p l fraction for HT29 and MCF-7 was(780.00 ± 28.28)and(895.00 ± 7.07) mg/m l, respectively. Cell shrinkage, membrane blebbing and formation of apoptotic bodies were noted following treatment of HT29 cells with n-butanol ***: In conclusion, n-butanol fraction was more cytotoxic than crude ethanolic extract and aqueous fraction towards the selected cancerous cell lines and induced apoptosis in HT29 cells.

Objective:To determine the anti-breast cancer activities and the safety oral consumption of Dillenia suffruticosa root aqueous extract(DRAE)in BAlB/c ***:In the anti-breast cancer study,female BAlB/c mice were divided into five groups(n=12),which were(1)positive control(with breast cancer,untreated),(2)negative control(without breast cancer,untreated)and other three groups of mice with breast cancer treated with 1 000,500 and 250 mg/kg of DRAE,respectively,by oral gavage for 28 *** mice except from the negative control group were injected into the mammary fat pad with 4T1 cells(1×1054T1 cells/0.1 m l of phosphate buffer solution).DRAE was administered orally on Day 11 after the tumor has ***:The tumor volume of the 1 000 mg/kg of DRAE group reduced significantly compared to the positive control while treatment with 500 mg/kg of DRAE had significantly inhibited metastasis to the *** the acute toxicity study,treatment with up to5 000 mg/kg of DRAE was not toxic to the animals,indicating its safety when a large amount of this plant extract was *** on the sub-acute toxicity study,treatment of the highest dose of DRAE(1 000 mg/kg)had mild liver toxicity indicated by mild focal ***:DRAE possesses anti-breast cancer properties but at the same time it shows mild toxicity to the *** non observable adverse effect dose for DRAE is500 mg/kg.

Sustainable use of palm oil mill effluent (pOME) has been the major focus in the recent development in palm oil industry due to the fact that environmental issue brought by pOME. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum incubation period of purple non-sulphur bacterium (pNSB) in reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (Tp) in settled pOME and to determine the dry cell weight, TN, Tp and cell yield of pNSB. pure isolate of Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain UMSFW1 was cultured in settled pOME under anaerobic condition at 2500 lux illumination on light intensity at a temperature of 30°C ± 2°C for 144-h. parameters such as COD (mg/l), dry cell biomass (g/l), Tp (mg/l) and TN (mg/l) in settled pOME and bacterial cells were analyzed. A total reduction of TN (43.9%) in settled pOME and a total increase of TN (43.2%) in bacterial cell were recorded at the end of experiment. At the same time the reduction of 51.5% chemical oxygen demand was determined from the pOME. The highest dry cell weight of 2.44 g/l with cell yield 0.39 (mg/cell/mg COD) was achieved at the end of experiment. A total 24.7% of Tp reduction in settled pOME was achieved in 144-h culture, but while a maximum 10% of Tp in bacterial cell was achieved in 48-h culture. This study shows that pNSB Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain UMSFW1 grows well by using settled pOME as substrate and is capable to remove TN in the settled pOME and assimilate into bacterial biomass. This study could provide us a further insight in the nutrient removal and COD removal in the bioremediation process by bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain UMSFW1.
