lightweight convolutional neural network models for semanticsegmentation of in-field cotton bolls

Robotic harvesting of cotton bolls will incorporate the benefits of manual picking as well as mechanical harvesting. For robotic harvesting, in-field cotton segmentation with minimal errors is desirable which is a challengingtask. In the present study, three lightweight fully convolutional neural network models were developed for thesemantic segmentation of in-field cotton bolls. Model 1 does not include any residual or skip connections,while model 2 consists of residual connections to tackle the vanishing gradient problem and skip connectionsfor feature concatenation. Model 3 along with residual and skip connections, consists of filters of multiplesizes. The effects of filter size and the dropout rate were studied. All proposed models segment the cotton bollssuccessfully with the cotton-IoU (intersection-over-union) value of above 88.0%. The highest cotton-IoU of91.03% was achieved by model 2. The proposed models achieved F1-score and pixel accuracy values greaterthan 95.0% and 98.0%, respectively. The developed models were compared with existing state-of-the-art networks namely VGG19, ResNet18, EfficientNet-B1, and InceptionV3. Despite having a limited number of trainableparameters, the proposed models achieved mean-IoU (mean intersection-over-union) of 93.84%, 94.15%, and94.65% against the mean-IoU values of 95.39%, 96.54%, 96.40%, and 96.37% obtained using state-of-the-art networks. The segmentation time for the developed models was reduced up to 52.0% compared to state-of-theart networks. The developed lightweight models segmented the in-field cotton bolls comparatively faster andwith greater accuracy. Hence, developed models can be deployed to cotton harvesting robots for real-time recognition of in-field cotton bolls for harvesting.

Image processing based real-time variable-rate chemical spraying system for disease control in paddy crop

The agrochemical applicationwith conventional sprayers results inwastage of applied chemicals,which not only increases the economic losses but also pollutes the environment.In order to overcome these drawbacks,an image processing based real-time variable-rate chemical spraying systemwas developed for the precise application of agrochemicals in diseased paddy crop based on crop disease severity information.The developed system comprised ofweb cameras for image acquisition,laptop for image processing,microcontroller for controlling the system functioning,and solenoid valve assisted spraying nozzles.The chromatic aberration(CA)based image segmentation method was used to detect the diseased region of paddy plants.The system further calculated the disease severity level of paddy plants,based onwhich the solenoid valves remained on for a specific timeduration so that the required amount of agrochemical could be sprayed on the diseased paddy plants.Field performance of developed sprayer prototype was evaluated in the variable-rate application(VRA)and constant-rate application(CRA)modes.The field testing results showed a minimum 33.88%reduction in applied chemical while operating in the VRA mode as compared with the CRA mode.Hence,the developed systemappears promising and could be used extensively to reduce the cost of pest management as well as to control environmental pollution due to such agrochemicals.

Cool white light and tunable multicolor emission from Tb^(3+)/Dy^(3+)co-activated glasses under different excitations for WlEDs

A set of co-doped(Tb^(3+)/Dy^(3+))lithium zinc borate(lZB)glasses were developed by melt quenching.The structural evaluation was performed for synthesized glassy matrices.The Dy^(3+)and Tb^(3+)individually doped glasses exhibit intense yellow and green luminescence bands at 575 nm(^(4)F_(9/2)→^(6)H_(13/2))and543 nm(^(5)D_(4)→^(7)F_(5)),respectively.The sensitization effect of Dy^(3+)on Tb^(3+)was analyzed by increasing the Tb^(3+)content with respect to the optimum Dy^(3+)content(0.5 mol%)in Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+).The spectral overlay of Dy^(3+)luminescence and Tb^(3+)absorption profiles,Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)Pl spectra under different excitations 352,362,376,and 385 nm,shortening decay lifetimes of Dy^(3+)in Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)co-activated glasses,energy transfer(ET)parameters,chromaticity coordinates and their corresponding correlated temperatures all help to explain ET from Dy^(3+)to Tb^(3+).At 385 nm of Dy^(3+)excitation,the optimized co-activated(0.5Dy^(3+)+1.0Tb^(3+)):lZB glass displays cool white light emission.The non-radiative ET from Dy^(3+)to Tb^(3+)is dominated by electric dipole-dipole interaction and its ET efficiency was calculated to be 63%.At the same time,reverse ET from Tb^(3+)to Dy^(3+)was also analyzed.The shift in color coordinates from dominant yellow to greenish-yellow,green and white light emission suggests that Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)coactivated lZB glasses can be a potential candidate for UV converted multicolor and white light emitting devices.

Use of donepezil for neurocognitive recovery after brain injury in adult and pediatric populations:a scoping review

There are few pharmacologic options for the treatment of cognitive deficits associated with traumatic brain injury in pediatric patients.Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil have been evaluated in adult patients after traumatic brain injury,but relatively less is known about the effect in pediatric populations.The goal of this review is to identify knowledge gaps in the efficacy and safety of acetylcholinesterase inhibito rs as a potential a djuvant treatment fo r neurocognitive decline in pediatric patients with traumatic brain injury.Investigators queried PubMed to identify literature published from database inception thro ugh June 2023 desc ribing the use of donepezil in young adult traumatic brain injury and pediatric patients with predefined conditions.Based on preselected search criteria,340 unique papers we re selected for title and abstra ct screening.Thirty-two reco rds were reviewed in full after eliminating preclinical studies and pape rs outside the scope of the project.In adult traumatic brain injury,we review results from 14 papers detailing 227 subjects where evidence suggests donepezil is well tole rated and shows both objective and patient-reported efficacy for reducing cognitive impairment.In children,3 pape rs report on 5 children recovering from traumatic brain injury,showing limited efficacy.An additional 15 pediatric studies conducted in populations at risk for cognitive dysfunction provide a broader look at safety and efficacy in 210 patients in the pediatric age group.Given its promise for efficacy in adults with traumatic brain injury and tole rability in pediatric patients,we believe further study of donepezil for children and adolescents with traumatic brain injury is warranted.

An ancient conflict between hosts and pathogens has driven the innate and adaptive arms of immunity.knowledge about this interplay can not only help us identify biological mechanisms but also reveal pathogen vulnerabilities that can be leveraged therapeutically.The humoral response to SARS-CoV-2 infection has been the focus of intense research,and the role of the innate immune system has received significantly less attention.Here,we review current knowledge of the innate immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and the various means SARS-CoV-2 employs to evade innate defense systems.We also consider the role of innate immunity in SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and in the phenomenon of long COVID.

Pancreatic surgery units undertake several complex operations,albeit with consi-derable morbidity and mortality,as is the case for the management of complicated acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis.The centralisation of pancreatic surgery services,with the development of designated large-volume centres,has contribu-ted to significantly improved outcomes.In this editorial,we discuss the complex associations between diabetes mellitus(DM)and pancreatic/periampullary disease in the context of pancreatic surgery and overall management of complex pancreatitis,highlighting the consequential needs and the indispensable role of specialist diabetes teams in support of tertiary pancreatic services.Type 3c pan-creatogenic DM,refers to DM developing in the setting of exocrine pancreatic disease,and its identification and management can be challenging,while the glycaemic control of such patients may affect their course of treatment and outcome.Adequate preoperative diabetes assessment is warranted to aid identification of patients who are likely to need commencement or escalation of glucose lowering therapy in the postoperative period.The incidence of new onset diabetes after pancreatic resection is widely variable in the literature,and depends on the type and extent of pancreatic resection,as is the case with pancreatic parenchymal loss in the context of severe pancreatitis.Early involvement of a specialist diabetes team is essential to ensure a holistic management.In the current era,large volume pancreatic surgery services commonly abide by the principles of enhanced recovery after surgery,with inclusion of provisions for optimisation of the perioperative glycaemic control,to improve outcomes.While various guidelines are available to aid perioperative management of DM,auditing and quality improvement platforms have highlighted deficiencies in the perioperative management of diabetic patients and areas of required improvement.The need for perioperative support of diabetic patients by specialist diabetes teams is uniform

Analysis of the Impact of the Blazhko Effect Both on the Van Hoof Effect and Radial Velocity Amplitude in the Star RR lyr

The Van Hoof effect is a phase shift existing between the radial velocity curves of hydrogen and metallic lines within the atmosphere of pulsating stars. In this article, we present a study of this phenomenon through the spectra of the brightest pulsating star RR lyr of RR lyrae stars recorded for 22 yr. We based ourselves, on the one hand,on 1268 spectra(41 nights of observation) recorded between the years 1994 and 1997 at the Observatory of Haute Provence(OHP, France) previously observed by Chadid and Gillet, and on the other hand on 1569 spectra(46nights of observation) recorded at our Oukaimeden Observatory(Morocco) between 2015 and 2016. Through this study, we have detected information on atmospheric dynamics that had not previously been detected. Indeed, the Van Hoof effect which results in a clear correlation between the radial velocities of hydrogen and those of the metallic lines has been observed and analyzed at different Blazhko phases. A correlation between the radial velocities of different metallic lines located in the lower atmosphere has been observed as well. For the first time,we were able to show that the amplitude of the radial velocity curves deduced from the lines of hydrogen and that of Fe Ⅱ(λ4923.921 ?) increases toward the minimum of the Blazhko cycle and decreases toward the maximum of the same Blazhko cycle. Furthermore, we found that the Van Hoof effect is also modulated by the Blazhko effect.Thus, toward the minimum of the Blazhko cycle the Van Hoof effect is more visible and at the maximum of the Blazhko cycle, this effect is minimal. We also observed the temporal evolution of the amplitudes of the radial velocities of the lower and upper atmosphere. When observed over a long time, we can interpret it as a function of the Blazhko phases.

Nickel sulfate solution fluoride separation with hydrous zirconium oxide

Fluoride is an impurity in nickel sulfate production,which is required for electric vehicle batteries.Hydrous zirconium oxide(HZO)was evaluated for removing fl uoride from nickel sulfate solution.Maximum fluoride removal occurred at pH value 4 and optimal pH value is 4–5,considering Zr solubility.Fluoride availability decreases with pH due to hydrogen fluoride and zirconium fluoride aqueous species.Fluoride removal is initially rapid,with 50 wt.%removal in 7 min,followed by slow removal up to 68 wt.%after 72 h and follows second order rate kinetics.Fluoride removal was dominated by an ion exchange mechanism and resulting Zr–F bonds were observed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.The presence of nickel sulfate decreased loading capacity compared to a salt-free solution.HZO maintained adsorption capacity through five cycles of loading and regeneration.

On the functions of astrocyte-mediated neuronal slow inward currents

Slow inward currents are known as neuronal excitatory currents mediated by glutamate release and activation of neuronal extra synaptic N-met hyl-D-aspartate receptors with the contribution of astrocytes.These events are significantly slower than the excitatory postsynaptic currents.Parameters of slow inward currents are determined by seve ral factors including the mechanisms of astrocytic activation and glutamate release,as well as the diffusion pathways from the release site towards the extra synaptic recepto rs.Astrocytes are stimulated by neuronal network activity,which in turn excite neurons,forming an astrocyte-neuron feedback loop.Mostly as a consequence of brain edema,astrocytic swelling can also induce slow inward currents under pathological conditions.There is a growing body of evidence on the roles of slow inward currents on a single neuron or local network level.These events often occur in synchro ny on neurons located in the same astrocytic domain.Besides synchronization of neuronal excitability,slow inward currents also set synaptic strength via eliciting timing-dependent synaptic plasticity.In addition,slow inward currents are also subject to non-synaptic plasticity triggered by long-la sting stimulation of the excitatory inputs.Of note,there might be important regionspecific differences in the roles and actions triggering slow inward currents.In greater networks,the pathophysiological roles of slow inward currents can be better understood than physiological ones.Slow inward currents are identified in the pathophysiological background of autism,as slow inward currents drive early hypersynchrony of the neural networks.Slow inward currents are significant contributors to paroxysmal depolarizational shifts/interictal spikes.These events are related to epilepsy,but also found in Alzheimer's disease,Parkinson's disease,and stroke,leading to the decline of cognitive functions.Events with features overlapping with slow inward currents(excitatory,N-methyl-Daspartate-receptor mediated currents with astrocyti

In this work,we have explored wormhole(WH)solutions in F(R,l_(m))gravity by assuming the Morris-Thorne WH metric and F(R,lm)=R/2+(1+γR)l_(m),whereγis the free model parameter.We determined the WH solutions by utilizing two newly developed shape functions(SF)that satisfy all basic conditions for a WH’s physical validity.We also observe that the null energy condition(NEC)behaves negatively.Finally,for both models,we use the volume integral quantifier(VIQ)and Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff(TOV)equation to determine how much exotic matter is needed near the WH throat and the stability of the WH.The extensive detailed discussions of the matter components have been done via graphical analysis.The obtained WH geometries meet the physically acceptable conditions for a stable wormhole.
